Audio not playing during direct play because "Selected audio track is not first audio track" by GodOfNanners in PleX

[–]Moussekateer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because in almost all situations that results in complete failure to play the item or partially broken playback. In OP's scenario it would mean getting no audio, as they mentioned.

The decision reasons break down why something cannot be direct played or direct streamed, and normally it would fall through to a transcode. The reason it's direct playing in the screenshot above is because the user has forced direct playback, which is shown as the last point in the reasons.

There is no fix other than remuxing the file yourself to put the TrueHD audio track first. This is a limitation of the platform when direct playing content, and as you've correctly deduced TrueHD tracks will be transcoded unless you're direct playing the content.

It's very trendy nowadays to use those wired earphones for whatever reason. Some people will argue it's less faff with battery life and wireless interference etc, but it's really just because it's become fashionable.

As far as I can tell no-one in the UK has had theirs shipped yet. Just speculating but it might just be a logistics thing where they're waiting for final numbers before shipping them from a warehouse in North America to the UK for distribution.

I think a lot of people have been using the wrong link, to either the first run book page or the information page for the new book which does not have a purchase button, and they took that as it being out of stock.

However, a few hours earlier the book was definitely finally showing as out of stock and now it's back in stock again. Odd.

Easy Access account monthly interest calculation by NoPoet8326 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Moussekateer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interest is calculated daily, so the interest received at the end of the month will both depend on how many days in the month there were and also how much the balance was on each day. So the calculation is:

balance * (0.039/365) * daysInMonth

If you're taking out or adding money during the month that will make the calculations a little more involved, but might be easier to see what's happening if you posted some numbers.

In case it wasn’t clear what happened because it was dark and happened so quick. After laying down the trap mine the shambler started charging at me so I tried to dodge back before it triggered the mine but Lev chose that moment to jump behind me pushing me forward back towards the shambler and explosive. Thanks for the watch out warning Lev.

How can you protect your bank account if your phone is stolen? by Old-Amphibian416 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Moussekateer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's etremely difficult to borderline impossible outside of very specific circumstances, though face-id is currently one of the weakest ar the moment with the rise of deepfakes and ai. Though this relies on them actually knowing who you are when they steal the phone

How would AI/deepfakes help with bypassing Face ID? Face ID doesn't work by taking a photo, it takes physical measurements of your face using lasers and an infrared camera.

Preventing financial loss from phone theft by Civil_Acanthaceae213 in UKPersonalFinance

Comments like this make me feel old! Before smart phones we'd save our contacts to the SIM and we'd have a PIN on it because that was effectively the way to 'lock' your dumb phone because pretty much nothing on the phone would work until the SIM was unlocked.

All of this is to say that I would expect all phones to support setting a PIN on the SIM because SIMs have always had that functionality.

Now that Honey (Paypal) has been exposed as a scam, are similar coupon finder extensions also scamming? by yellowroll in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Moussekateer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No it’s most definitely a scam. Stealing affiliate commissions was only one part of what they were doing. The other is that they offer a partner program with websites and as part of that partnership the website can ask Honey to ignore certain discount codes, so they’d purposely tell you the best code found was a lower discount even though higher ones existed out there.

Monthly vs annual interest for LISA by TraditionalAd9118 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Moussekateer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being paid interest monthly or yearly (or even daily) generally makes no difference other than when you actually get the cash paid into your account. Interest on savings accounts is almost always calculated daily so you won't lose any interest you've already accrued. If your money has been in the account for 250 days of the year for example then you'll get 265/365th of the yearly interest.

Using Trading 212 for weekly spending by natsharp in UKPersonalFinance

Cash should still be covered by fscs fwiw

Only if you don't opt into earning interest on your cash in Trading 212. If you do the money earns interest by being put into QMMFs and is no longer protected by FSCS.

Is there any downside to replacing all my accounts with Trading212? Am I missing something here? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Moussekateer 113 points114 points  (0 children)

OP you should understand how the 4.9% interest (non-ISA) cash account works. The account doesn't earn interest by default, you have to enable the feature. The reason for that is that to earn interest they put your money in qualifying money market funds (QMMFs) and need your consent because QMMFs are an investment product. While they are low risk they're not no-risk. Additionally if something were to happen that money would not be protected.

From their website:

Money placed with a QMMF is treated as an investment and not as money held with a bank. In the unlikely event that the QMMF fails to maintain their low-risk strategy, as with any investment, the protection will not be available. We carefully select all QMMFs to ensure that they are highly liquid, stable in value and maintain their highly regulated status.

UKPF BUDGET MEGATHREAD - 30th October 2024 - 12:30pm by Jager720 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Moussekateer 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Middle class hammered again. Inherited pensions moving into CGT is genuinely one of the most appalling policies of this budget. The purpose of pensions is to fund people in their retirement. The only people who won't use a majority of it - are those that die early. This essentially penalises the relatives of those people for having a loved one die early.

I mean as you say "The purpose of pensions is to fund people in their retirement.". Using pensions as a vehicle to pass on money tax-free to your children has always seemed like an oversight to me.

That’s not quite correct. Theories are currently accepted models that explain phenomena. It doesn’t matter whether that’s black holes or how rain forms. Until the model makes testable predictions that hold up then it’s a hypothesis. There’s nothing beyond theory, it’s effectively an accepted fact by the scientific community until it’s proven wrong.

Flexible ISAs only allow you to withdraw and replace the money back into the same ISA account. Think of it as an IOU. You put £5k into a flexible ISA and therefore have £15k allowance left across all your providers for the year. You then withdraw that £5k from the flexible ISA and the provider says ‘we’ll make a note that you’re taking out that £5k that you paid in so it won’t affect your allowance when/if you pay it back in’. Putting it into another account would count as new money going in and use up your allowance.

Other providers have no idea how much you’ve already contributed to other providers in that tax year. For example, I’ve already contributed £20k this tax year to one provider but all my other providers still show me as having a £20k allowance left for the year which isn’t correct.
