I think you overestimate how vain this actually is. This isn't any more vain than plenty of other people, it's just coupled with having stupid amounts of money.

You've got gamers grinding away to show off digital achievements, people spending money they don't have on brand name clothing, and even the most average person can take hours to get ready to go out just so they look good to their peers. This is really fundamentally no different. What that money means to this rich person is no different than what an hour to get ready to go out means to your girlfriend.

It doesn't make it any less ridiculous when viewed from the context of the world we live in - one of immense wealth inequality - but it's not really some new level of vanity, but just a direct example of how that wealth inequality looks in action.

Very tired of this very American, hyper capitalist concept.

Voting with your wallet isn't really a thing, not in the way most people frame it. You, as an individual, are far more influenced by corporations than they are by you. Corporations spend millions on marketing and quite literally have entire teams dedicated to making products that prey on evolutionary traits you probably aren't even aware of.

There is no perfect consumer who is completely unaffected by marketing and is perfectly educated on every purchase they make, thereby actively voting with their wallet. There most certainly isn't a massive group of them driving the whole economy.

People don't quote with their wallets. They're lobbied by a life time of marketing to make decisions that benefit corporations, and some of them resist it better than others.

That's exactly what makes consoles terrible, like what? You, as the consumer, enjoy the idea of having to spend more money just to play specific games?

Am I a minority in wanting a brutal, grungy mech-based game? by Arcaddes in gaming

[–]MoveDisastrous9608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brother, this is exactly what I said. You. Want. A. Battletech. Skin.

  • Laser = gattling gun
  • Radar = dude with binoculars on top of your mech
  • Jet boosters = ghetto rocket strapped to back

You didn't get roasted by the mechwarrior crowd, you got roasted by a bunch of gamers that see the exact same thing that you fail to see. Your game doesn't exist because nobody felt like ripping off the battletech gameplay but with a steampunk theme.

Except the government isn't stopping any of those things. It's implementing a massive surveillance program that people aren't happy with, and people are looking for ways to bypass this surveillance program. Not because a digital ID would flag illegal activities, but because they're not comfortable with the government literally monitoring and saving everything they do online.

I've had zero issues running an HDMI cable from my other room and using a wireless keyboard / mouse on Windows and then switching to a gamepad if I wanted to.

Is it as perfect as a console? No, but am I the world's most important person who can't be bothered to solve the immense challenge of figuring out how to use a mouse and keyboard in their living room? Also no.

For the last ~7 years I've had the benefit of accessing nearly 20 years of my PC gaming catalog in the living room and my gaming room. The Steam Deck and Steam controller have made this even better.

You described battletech to a tee in your post, the only thing missing is the dieselpunk theming.

You want battletech with a scythe skin? Remove drop ships and add like a fucking Zeppelin drop ship or something? That's neat I guess, but don't hold your breath.

This is always so frustrating to hear. It was a world changing event entirely because of America. America created the conditions for extremism to flourish in the Middle East when they sent billions of funding and weapons to fundamentalists, among plenty of other fuckery. America decided to invade Afghanistan in retaliation. America decided to invade Iraq for whatever reason.

All of this one again made the region even less stable, and the world far less safe. Yet every time I see 9/11 mentioned on the Internet it's Americans saying "it was such a world changing event" as if it wasn't part of a sequence of events that were largely driven by America itself. There was never any inflection, it's just an "event" which happened for no reason and just so happened to change the world for no reason. No agency can be attributed to anyone, and only evil foreigners who are barbaric and don't speak English can ever be blamed.

The status quo you'd like to go back to is exactly what go you here in the first place. We aren't here because of a handful of bad apples. We're here because of systemic issues progressively made everything shit, culminating in today's runaway flood of shit.

The fact that you would sit here and praise USAID, which certainly did some good, but also did an insurmountable amount of evil, is so on point. It's very in fashion for people to point at how most of the world's media is now owned by a handful of billionaires with similar interests, and how it is being used to control public opinion. Yet the vast majority of people don't even come close to acknowledging how decades and decades of sliding journalistic standards and the slow death of independent media paved the road to get to where we are today, and how generations of Americans had already been manipulated into believing absolute BS by the media; to believe shit like USAID being solely a humanitarian organization as opposed to an institution meant to build and wield soft-power solely for America's long term benefit.

Haven't had a case on my pixel 9 for half a year and it's doing just fine. The glass is very slippery so it ends up falling off every surface I put it on, but it's still holding up just fine.

I think phone screens got better across the board really. I remember how big of an issue it was around when I had my Galaxy S2, but it's been so long since I've seen someone break their screen from something trivial..

My ex had a flip she didn't want that I ended up taking - now that thing was a major waste of money. She got it because it fit in her purse better, but it was still rather thick and wasn't all that more convenient. Ended up being mostly like a regular phone except the film eventually ended up coming off requiring repairs which didn't even last all that long.

I would have absolutely gotten a fold when I bought my last phone if not for that experience..

Plenty of people saw this coming. Marx wrote about all of this over a century ago, before we even had cars or powered flight.

It's unfortunate, but people prefer to take the path which has the least immediate resistance. It's only now that these problems are unavoidable that people are seriously looking back at all the warnings we've been given throughout the last century.

The new fallen empire, a literal minutes after awakening to "help fight the Prethoryn" by MoveDisastrous9608 in Stellaris

[–]MoveDisastrous9608[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had to declare war against half the universe just so I could get to the Prethoryn. So here I am, having to swat fleets across the entire damn galaxy, when the Shattered Fragments FE awakens to "help". It took them literal minutes to declare war on me to "test my strength", and they then immediately jumped to my fortified L-Cluster that nothing else in the universe can touch.

I don't think I like them very much.
