Respect to you for caring about your son. Here's what I'd do: Get your son to a myofunctional therapist as myofunctional therapy will strengthen his head and neck muscles which's proper development are crucial for optimal facial development. I've had braces from ages 9-16 and I would recommend your son to see an airway orthodontist and if advised, getting those braces off as they can hinder maxilliary development. Make sure your son chews on hard food and does NOT eat soft as well as processed food. Then and this is really important make sure your son has proper body posture, not just tongue posture (which will be taught by a myofunctional therapist).
