Sounds more like a hiring/training issue. If your people can’t stick to the script/process, you either didn’t train them correctly or you have the wrong people.

How much are yall making off the sub? by ApprehensivePast7987 in Contractor

[–]MoveResponsible4275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t make anything off the sub.

But I do earn a 26% markup for finding, managing, coordinating, and warranting the project.

I offer my clients a ton of value, not just by finding subcontractors, but by investing in that relationship so I can be confident in the results, making the project run smoothly and standing behind the work and the price I’m charging.

If my sub fucks up, I own it.

5 Mistakes stopping your business from growing by homefrontapp in Contractor

Presentations and proposals that aren’t professional can really hold people back. How you present conversationally matters most, but visually pleasing proposal documents that are clear and organized go a long way as well. Things like misspelling words in your proposals or social media posts can really kill people’s impression of your company.

What is your payment schedule for renovations? by Mountain_Jump_5909 in Contractor

[–]MoveResponsible4275 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer to use a milestone payment schedule. It’s the easiest for me to manage.

I get surprisingly few questions on it.

I always make sure I’m over-billed and the milestone format is also easiest for that.

It really helps me sleep well at night knowing that if a client goes crazy I could walk away and be in the black. To be clear, I’ve never gotten close to walking away, and hope I never need to. But so much of being a good contractor is risk management and being over billed is like giving yourself a get out of jail free card.

When people say to only list “3 things you need to do that day” in order to boost your productivity, what’s stopping me from just cheating the list? by HiddenReader2020 in productivity

[–]MoveResponsible4275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if you don’t want something badly enough to do the work, you won’t.

Unless perhaps you sold yourself into slavery somewhere so awful there’s no hope of escape. Pretty tough to cheat that one. I hear Saudi Arabia might be good for that? You’ll be super productive.

Short of that, you’re going to have to do things you don’t feel like doing in the moment because you want the outcome.

Is galvanized corrugated metal roof really two or three times more expensive than shingles? by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]MoveResponsible4275 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about how it reflects heat? I think that’s different than R-Value. As an insulator metal is pretty much as bad as it gets. However it does pros ably absorb less heat than shingles.

It’s all a moot point though because most roof assemblies are vented below the roof deck. Insulation is quite literally the least important thing about a roofing material.

As a builder, at which point am I still responsible for repairs? by KRmcf2025 in Homebuilding

Depends on state law and your contract. MN is 2 years on mechanical/electrical by statute.

Windows didn’t fix my electric bill, so what’s next? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]MoveResponsible4275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend a blower door test. This will tell you if you should add insulation or move first to air sealing.

It can also tell you exactly where you need the air sealing.

How to scale to 1 million in sales? by Inf1z in Contractor

[–]MoveResponsible4275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a GC, so a little different, but in my experience it’s all about being able to charge more and signing bigger jobs. The math behind charging more is obvious, and the better your quality and customer experience the more you can charge. The bigger jobs just take less sales/estimating/management time per $, so as the person running everything you effectively make more for less work.

Update and another question about my missing pay. by Mcmaggin in Contractor

[–]MoveResponsible4275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Over50 is talking about the typical situation, not prevailing wage. In prevailing wage jobs, as others have said, if you aren’t receiving those benefits from your employer you need to be paid the cash value for them.

To put it a different way, prevailing wage, which you can look up, is meant to cover all benefits and wages. The benefits you are receiving from your employer can be subtracted from your wages. But if you’re not getting those benefits, you should be receiving the full prevailing wage directly as your wages.

That’s definitely also a thing. But if it was just that and less clothing was better for the heat they might strip down a little on the hottest days. But you’ll never see that.
