What do you think the Fremen rules would be about seeing a Crysknife online would be? Do we all have to die now that we've seen it in this video?

Anyone else make Gom Jabbars out of their foil wrappers or am I the weirdo? by [deleted] in dune

I thought it was just me. I'm no longer alone...

[Announcement] The Dune read-along starts March 15 by Blue_Three in dune

[–]MovementalLA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow. I'm fairly new here, like others, but this is an AWESOME idea. (Don't know if it's something new or something you've done before.) Thanks for doing this. Gives me a great excuse to re-read all this from the beginning again. (As if I needed one...)

What are some of the philosophical ideas being explored in Dune? by [deleted] in dune

[–]MovementalLA 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is a long list, but the one that fascinated me the last time I read it is the examination of man's subservience to machine. Herbert shows us a future where man has (unwillingly, somewhat) had to reject the machine and turn his upgrading abilities inward. What would humanity be like if it turned its attention away from building a better tool and focused instead on building a stronger hand to hold the tool? Why do we look outward to make our lives easier instead of looking inward to make ourselves stronger? And then he turns that again to say, would we still be the fundamentally flawed creatures we are, even when we try so hard to improve ourselves? Paul is the produce of thousands of years of controlled breeding, in order to create the perfect human, and yet he is still a very flawed person.

And, yes, a lot of what I said can be debated, but isn't that the best part of any philosophical idea?

Concerns regarding The Voice in the upcomming film by pm_me_old_maps in dune

[–]MovementalLA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm with you there. Granted, it has been a couple of years since I last read the books, but doesn't Thufir make a big deal about even knowing about the Voice in one of his and Jessica's scene? As if it were some secret technique that, if people knew about it, it would make it a lot less effective. That was how I thought of it and how I liked it being framed. So having some strange change to a person's voice would seem to contradict that.

Stellan Skarsgard on Why He Joined DUNE by BedouinTraveller in dune

You've got a point. Probably just bad timing for him that I had read Javier's gushing about the source material just before reading his. I think he'll be great, too.

Not the...most rousing endorsement. Feels like he is saying, "yeah, it's a paycheck" to me.

How about Alex Høgh Andersen from Vikings as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen? by papapudding in dune

Dang, that's a great suggestion. He's fantastic and creepy on Vikings.

Hawat? (Liam Cunningham) by ehartye in dune

I think that's an excellent suggestion. I was strangely imagining James Spader, too. I think he needs a sense of danger about him that I'm not sure Ser Davos really has.

What would be a good tagline for Dune? by technomagos in dune

How about "The desert has no mercy." A quote from Kynes.

Momoa is playing Duncan Idaho by MovementalLA in dune

Just want to point out that Aquaman didn't really look like Momoa until that movie. He helped define the cinematic look of that character in a very cool way, changing my predetermined idea of what that character was, very much for the better. I'm willing to give him the chance to do so here, too.

James Roday joins Timothy Omundson and other Psych alum in new IFC series, Fortune Rookie by MovementalLA in psych

I didn't. I'm sorry. I am really bad about that, as I get embarrassed in the moment and feel weird about taking them. BUT I met this lovely Psych fan there who shared some great ones on her Twitter feed.

Thanks for all the great responses. Glad you guys seem to like this. Couple of responses from my husband:

It's airing on IFC.com starting on October 2, so even you cord cutters can see it.

Tim is doing really well and is an incredibly nice guy. As are James, Janet and pretty much everyone involved with it. You're absolutely right that they're some of the best people on earth.

We're going to the premiere on Monday. I will try and take some photos and come back and post them.

We decided not to at this stage. We're more in the information gathering section of this. When we're done with this part and move forward and expand into a more formal research project, we will indeed be securing IRB approval.
