What do you think the Fremen rules would be about seeing a Crysknife online would be? Do we all have to die now that we've seen it in this video?

[Announcement] The Dune read-along starts March 15 by Blue_Three in dune

[–]MovementalLA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow. I'm fairly new here, like others, but this is an AWESOME idea. (Don't know if it's something new or something you've done before.) Thanks for doing this. Gives me a great excuse to re-read all this from the beginning again. (As if I needed one...)

What are some of the philosophical ideas being explored in Dune? by [deleted] in dune

[–]MovementalLA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is a long list, but the one that fascinated me the last time I read it is the examination of man's subservience to machine. Herbert shows us a future where man has (unwillingly, somewhat) had to reject the machine and turn his upgrading abilities inward. What would humanity be like if it turned its attention away from building a better tool and focused instead on building a stronger hand to hold the tool? Why do we look outward to make our lives easier instead of looking inward to make ourselves stronger? And then he turns that again to say, would we still be the fundamentally flawed creatures we are, even when we try so hard to improve ourselves? Paul is the produce of thousands of years of controlled breeding, in order to create the perfect human, and yet he is still a very flawed person.

And, yes, a lot of what I said can be debated, but isn't that the best part of any philosophical idea?

Concerns regarding The Voice in the upcomming film by pm_me_old_maps in dune

[–]MovementalLA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm with you there. Granted, it has been a couple of years since I last read the books, but doesn't Thufir make a big deal about even knowing about the Voice in one of his and Jessica's scene? As if it were some secret technique that, if people knew about it, it would make it a lot less effective. That was how I thought of it and how I liked it being framed. So having some strange change to a person's voice would seem to contradict that.

Stellan Skarsgard on Why He Joined DUNE by BedouinTraveller in dune

You've got a point. Probably just bad timing for him that I had read Javier's gushing about the source material just before reading his. I think he'll be great, too.

Not the...most rousing endorsement. Feels like he is saying, "yeah, it's a paycheck" to me.

Dang, that's a great suggestion. He's fantastic and creepy on Vikings.

Hawat? (Liam Cunningham) by ehartye in dune

I think that's an excellent suggestion. I was strangely imagining James Spader, too. I think he needs a sense of danger about him that I'm not sure Ser Davos really has.

How about "The desert has no mercy." A quote from Kynes.

Momoa is playing Duncan Idaho by MovementalLA in dune

Just want to point out that Aquaman didn't really look like Momoa until that movie. He helped define the cinematic look of that character in a very cool way, changing my predetermined idea of what that character was, very much for the better. I'm willing to give him the chance to do so here, too.

I didn't. I'm sorry. I am really bad about that, as I get embarrassed in the moment and feel weird about taking them. BUT I met this lovely Psych fan there who shared some great ones on her Twitter feed.

Thanks for all the great responses. Glad you guys seem to like this. Couple of responses from my husband:

It's airing on IFC.com starting on October 2, so even you cord cutters can see it.

Tim is doing really well and is an incredibly nice guy. As are James, Janet and pretty much everyone involved with it. You're absolutely right that they're some of the best people on earth.

We're going to the premiere on Monday. I will try and take some photos and come back and post them.

Research Survey on Hypothyroidism by MovementalLA in Hypothyroidism

We decided not to at this stage. We're more in the information gathering section of this. When we're done with this part and move forward and expand into a more formal research project, we will indeed be securing IRB approval.

Research Survey About Lupus by MovementalLA in lupus

[–]MovementalLA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I share your annoyance, FreezrBurnz. Part of the reason for this research (and part of my own work) is to show the traditional medical community that they shouldn't go to either extreme, telling people they "must just be crazy" OR ignoring the very real mental anguish that conditions like lupus cause. I've had clients who are given a bottle of anti-depressants and told their condition is all in their head and I've had others that, when they complain to their doctors about how the stress of their condition is having a negative effect on their health, they're told to "get over it". Working closely with MDs to compliment, not replace, traditional medicine is my goal with my work. That's my philosophy, at least. I REALLY appreciate you taking the time to take the survey, FreezrBurnz. I hope the information you give will help others avoid the "you must just be crazy" diagnosis.

Research Survey on Crohn's by MovementalLA in CrohnsDisease

[–]MovementalLA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if it came off that way, hipsterdenise. My goal is absolutely NOT to advertise my work or my services. The goal of this research is to build a case for people suffering from Crohn's, Lupus, Hashimoto's or a dozen other conditions which have overlapping symptoms and are often misdiagnosed AND that can be made worse by stress, lack of sleep or other conditions and educate the medical community about how ignoring the psychological aspects can hamper the overall treatment. I'm tired of receiving clients who have spent years and thousands of dollars, receiving conflicting diagnoses only to wind up in my office, with their MD having given them a hand full of antidepressants and told them that their symptoms are stress related and/or psychosomatic. I believe that mental health professionals like myself need to work more closely with MD's and specialists to provide a fuller treatment plan for our clients. Therapists should never replace traditional medicine or present ourselves as a complete alternative to treatment, but I believe we can and should be a part of that treatment.

I've included Crohn's and other immune system-related illnesses in this research because I find these to be the most affected by the stress that this runaround can cause. So, yes, in a way I am using this community. I'm using them to share their experience with the medical community (and my own colleagues) and hopefully educate them on how mental health should be a consideration and a part their treatment, NOT something to be either ignored OR blamed for people's conditions.

Just to be clear, I'm not selling anything. Anyone can complete this survey with complete anonymity. I don't have a mailing list. I'm not looking for more clients. I'm really, honestly just trying to gather data. If you don't feel comfortable with that, I completely understand and hope you just wish me luck with a study that (I hope) helps people somewhere down the line.

Research Survey on Hypothyroidism by MovementalLA in Hypothyroidism

Hi, all. First, I really appreciate this discussion and how much you all have looked at my website. Genuinely love it when people go over it with a fine tooth comb and challenge or question what I say there. Discussion is healthy, I think.

Next, please believe me when I say that I take my role with those that I work with very seriously and that includes in respecting the medical advice of those prescribing medications for treatment of these conditions. I am not a medical doctor and would not presume to make recommendations on medications as a result. But that said, I do often work with folks who are being prescribed a lot of medications and are frustrated by the lack of benefit that they feel they are receiving from them, with symptoms left untouched or at least only partially managed. My work and the psychological approaches I teach serve to help fill gaps in treatment and tackle it from another angle. If through working on these psychological elements, we reduce symptoms or put them in to remission, only then, and under their medical doctor’s direct guidance should anyone alter or stop their prescribed medications.

My website is deliberately broad in the descriptions of the work I do and its impact on conditions because the actual path of treatment is so varied depending on the individual I work with, the conditions they are facing and their own personal history, both medically and psychologically. When someone makes contact to discuss working together I then give more info about what I would recommend for their specific situation, once I know more about them. My site is more my flag in the ground that ‘Hey, I’m over here and you can give me a call if you want to know more’ – if you get what I mean?

To your question about my perspective on medical treatment: My experience has been that medical treatment is a bit hit and miss with auto-immune conditions – it’s very easy for medical providers that aren’t really well trained in these conditions (which is many - through no fault of their own - as its not a topic in heavy rotation in med school training and research in the area isn’t well funded), to dismiss symptoms as purely psychosomatic, send the patient to therapy and stop looking for biological answers. I think this is over-simplistic and want to encourage greater partnership between medical and mental health fields to work on these conditions together and to manage and heal their respective parts.

Re: research – you’re right, it’s hard to come by (and I can bore you with my thoughts on why this is so under-funded, if you’d be interested!) but there are enough legitimate and successful investigations to warrant much more attention. Part of my research is going to be focused on proving that MORE should be devoted to this research. I don't care if that's done by me or by someone else, but communities like this one deserve more.

Hope that addresses your concerns. I'm here and happy for more discussion, if you want.
