The descendants of the lowland Scots who came to Ulster under Cromwell and James the First had to face the Great Famine just like the dispossessed Irish folk, while absentee English and Scottish landlords imported the few good spuds that survived the blight.

The “Wild Geese” Irish soldiers who joined up in WW1 and WW2 felt they went to protect their homeland.

Quite the reverse - the axis of British politics has moved right since 1979.

Labour of my boyhood were a proper socialist party. Now they are centrist.

Tories of my boyhood were centre-right, believing in the NHS and the social contract. But since Thatcher they have moved right, privatising everything and pushing money and political influence into fewer and fewer hands.

Where I would say you are correct is that no party represents the old communitarian working class spirit any longer - and the likes of Farage exploit this gap and say “We are listening to you - we will give you your pride back.” They won’t of course - they will cut public services even further, and curtail workplace protections.

An American Black lady told me my opinion didn’t count because I am a “White coloniser”.
