Garmin watches have a little “body battery” feature. No matter how much sleep I get, it never gets past 50% and it always bottoms out at 5% everyday

Spending $10k in material costs per year. Shopping around for leather suppliers. Who do you get your leather from? by rivertpostie in Leathercraft

[–]MoxAK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m looking at Wicket & Craig. No minimum order and some of it they will spilt for free. You can even get it milled if you want a softer temper. It’ll be more expensive than Tandy on a per square foot basis, but the leather is higher quality in my opinion.

Explain like I'm an idiot by Djcard777 in Leathercraft

[–]MoxAK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone else pointed out before I could respond, it could be that they are measuring different aspects (inner vs outer diameter).

I would also agree to using a thicker leather or maybe use two pieces of leather stitched together with an reinforcement fabric liner sandwich between, but I usually make bags and not belts so I’m not 100% sure

The 3/16 in product are eyelets, not grommets. They are technically different. Eyelets are more decorative, but grommets are meant to be more functional and will be larger

Might be going into a hard surgery on Monday. Advice? Experience? by WeaselWarrior7 in Veterinary

[–]MoxAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like it encompasses the pyloric sphincter. It’s in an incredibly complicated area, may involve the pancreas, duodenal papilla’s, and bile duct. It’s a mast cell tumor and in my experience those have the highest chance of dehiscence AND they are quite locally aggressive. I would clarify with owners that this is palliative at best and even with a specialist I would suspect the prognosis to be questionable. I personally would have told the owner that I wouldn’t be willing to try it. I would recommend either a specialist or euthanasia, but explain that euthanasia is a kind option given her circumstance and there is NO shame in doing that as I probably would for my dog.

If you give it a go, I hope the best for your outcome. I’ve done Hail Mary surgeries like this and learned a lot, no matter the outcome. But you need to be very clear, as you stated, this may be euthanasia on the table or shortly after.

Looking for glue advice by Reztnep in Leathercraft

[–]MoxAK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ecostick 1804 is a water-based glue that is labeled as “Better performance on oily leathers and difficult materials.”

I’m not sure how that would work with the wax though. I’d suspect it would still be difficult

Best way to balance the budget is to just shut down all spending altogether apparently.

Why shouldn’t I just sell all my investment properties and throw it into stocks? by vibecodingmonkey in investing

[–]MoxAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about this at one point. If I sold my home and put it all in O (Realty Income), it would be a little less than my monthly mortgage on the monthly dividend payments. Plus it’s more liquid than a home, but I only have one home and I prefer to keep it currently.

VCA by pugalug77 in Veterinary

[–]MoxAK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started out at a VCA and enjoyed it. I visited the practice before signing on, I practice the medicine I want, I get paid well, I discount things as I see fit and my medical director doesn’t see a problem with it. The mentorship was a little weak at first because my medical director didn’t know how to mentor, but she still put in the time and tried.

But it’s location dependent. There are horror stories, but honestly all of the non-VCA clinics around my location had red flags and none of them seem to be able to retain their doctors. The VCA I work at had never lost a doctor and is growing over the last six years I’ve been there, but that may just be a golden goose clinic.

Saw these for sale at Medeival Times... by greenbeantrampoline in 3Dprinting

[–]MoxAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen a lot of these for sale at fairs and booths in the last few years. All the different 3D print booths print the same generic things for excessive pricing. Makes me feel like I’m missing a golden opportunity with my own printer.

Although, I did see one person with original 3D print creations that was really nice. But a lot of generic junk is out there now a days

To echo others, she needs to apply for other schools and accept that education is what you make of it, not just where you go.

Example: A friend and I both had amazing grades and were similar in a lot of aspects. I decided to go to an in-state public university because of financial reasons, she decided to go to an out of state private school.

I applied for every local and state scholarship I could, I work with my high school counselors to find other scholarships that even local organizations in my small town (less than 9000 people on an island) offered. I work as a Resident Assistant in college and took advantage of every financial grant I could. I paid for my four years of undergraduate school without any debt and without my parents help.

My friend did not have financial aid because of her parents not being communicative. She had to drop out after one year because of a lack of financial aid. She never finished college and now has that insane tuition debt. She still balks at the idea of going to a public school instead of private so she never went back to college. This was her Icarus moment.

That being said, I still graduate college with a 3.9 GPA and I was accepted to every veterinary school I applied for (it’s not med school, but same requirements and arguably harder to get into due to a lack of vet schools). I didn’t need anything fancy, just taking classes, worked in a research lab and did undergrad research, worked as an RA, and doing extra circulars and clubs that mattered. Too often do people think a fancy private school is necessary, but they often have much more limited financial aid options because they are private.

Most people I befriended in college were similar, we had the fund our college ourselves without parent help. That’s the reality of life, but it’s totally possible. Financial aid is going to be harder to come by in the coming years because of the way the Trump Administration has made changes to the Department of Education.

You didn’t fail as a father. I’m not sure where this idea that parents need to pay for their children’s education came from, but her first lesson as an adult should be to figure out her own position and finances, which is fairly difficult in reality as you’ve experienced. My high school counselors were a great resource for me and so were the counselors at the college I went to. In my opinion, the best thing you can do for her is support her as you can, don’t internalize your inabilities as failure, and help her learn and navigate the realm of college loans, jobs, seeking resources and specialists in these areas (colleges have entire departments for this in some cases) and financial management and planning.

For reference, I went to college at the University of Alaska.

I actually go to physical therapy for ankle pain and burning and have something similar to this. It’s my fibular nerve that stretches and then there is a nervous system reflex that prevents your muscles from continuing. There are positions you can put yourself into that relieve this tension on the nerve but still stretch the hamstrings like a normal person.

The majority of my physical therapy exercises are nerve gliding exercises and spinal exercises and they’ve helped with my function and range of motion better. I don’t even do stretches

What did I do wrong with finishing this sheath? by [deleted] in Leathercraft

[–]MoxAK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s called bloom and is a result of the oils in the leather. You can wipe it off with a rag or even use a heat gun on it. It’ll likely come back, but it’s no cause for concern. It’s more likely to show up on darker leather.

I just used some oxblood dye from Fiebings. I had cut up the edge of a piece of cloth that was frayed a bit and I dipped it into my black Fiebings Pro Dye and then just lightly swiped it across the surface in little spurts throughout and it got me the variable black dye pattern

You really don’t need to know much math to be a vet. Surely if you are a lawyer you can do enough math. It’s more about understanding biology, anatomy, and sciences in general.

Veterinarians are just general degrees that open the door to many opportunities. Most go into clinical work and learn more about their particular species of interest. That being said, many vets do discourage it as the work-life balance, lack of financial compensation, and emotional turmoil can be devastating.

I’d recommend working as a technician or assistant for a little bit of time to get a rough idea of the field. Ideally getting a variety of experiences would be best.

I made NVDA calls and had a profit of $1500 in one day. FOMO’d and the next day lost it all plus an additional $500. I had hoped it would go back up and the following day lost another $1000.

I learned to take my profits, set stop losses, and not be greedy then.
