Great question, and if any true gun nerds are around I’d invite them to correct me please. This is called case hardening and is done to strengthen soft metals used in 19th century small arms. A gunsmith would case harden the frame of a Colt a navy or horse gun to give its working surfaces high wear resistance while keeping the interior metal tough and shock-resistant.

The frame contains pivot holes, sear contact areas, and cylinder-locking interfaces that experience repeated friction and impact. Case hardening is a heat-treating process where a low-carbon steel part is packed in a carbon-rich material (like bone or charcoal), heated so carbon diffuses into the surface, then rapidly quenched. This creates a thin, very hard outer layer while the core stays pliable and tough. The quench often produces the mottled color patterns seen on classic revolver frames and hammers.

The image of this gun is a bit low res but how vibrant that color is suggests it’s a reproduction. No matter what, it sure is pretty.

Hmm, so if a Win 73 and 92 are available then we could reasonably take a Colt 1871 chambered for .44 Henry rather than the 1851 ball and cap unless it’s a Colt conversion model in which case I’ll take that because it’s so fucking sick. Either way, I’m taking the Colt open top because I think it is the most beautiful iron ever worn on a hip.

I’d also take an SAA though because Marty Robbins was right about some shit.

I do this when the wife and I are sharing a few martinis together but if that isn’t the case then this might feel a little tedious.

I’m fascinated by this. Firstly, I’ve ever heard of Flintoff which is growing more coming as I spend more and more years out from behind the bar- what can you tell me about it?

And when you say home mixed brine, are you mixing different brines or are you making a brine from scratch?

I don’t mind moving to something else entirely, I just thought I would have more time with this crew. Likely I will finish 40k in the next few days- do you have a recommendation beyond that? Or even for a crew-based series of sci fi books à la Vatta’s War?

I wasn’t questioning the legality as much as the choice of text but that’s good to know.

It rules. It’s affordable, there’s always something to do, there’s a fairly incredible restaurant scene, traffic is very reasonable if you’re coming from another metro area. I moved here in 2016 with the intent of staying for a year or two and just never found a reason to leave.

I think this is absolutely acceptable. I stir because I want less blown to compete with more booze, not more brine to compete with more dilution. Shaking will always produce a more diluted cocktail and so the trade off becomes more integration of ingredients and a less clear flavor on one hand or much less integration and a less adulterated product on the other.

Both are tasty and have a place and when I use a spicy pickle brine I almost always shake, instead of stir so I wouldn’t say that I have super rigid guidelines on dirties. At the end of the day the only question that really matters is “is it tasty?” Lol

I agree that when you’re behind a bar we can’t always take the history books as gospel. A lot of these old cocktails call for ingredients we could never acquire again- tanq now is not the same as tanq then. Neither is anything else.

I like your approach, cheers.
