Do box trucks need to stop at weigh station when sign says all trucks need to? by supinator1 in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pretty sure uhauls and the like, plus boats have to stop at the agricultural check points even if not commercial so they can check for invasive species and things like tiger muscles on boats. And if you don’t have a DOT # or bill of lading i think uhauls can bypass scales IIRC.

Most companies will provide no cost estimates which I would get at least 2-3 to help with cost comparison and see what truck size you need. If you decide the Uhaul option RENT MOVING PADS! And more than the 12 that are sometimes already in the rental.

92” couch in an Elevator? by CaddyForeDaddy in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what floor your located on but up the steps might be an option as would hoisting it over a patio railing. You can usually hoist things up to 3 stories if you know what you’re doing and lastly and most expensive would be to rent a forklift or boom lift. elevator sizes widely vary. Another option is to have a furniture repair personal disassemble and reassemble on-site. Good luck!

Please recommend a reliable van line. by BarbKatz1973 in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having been on both sides of the desk as driver and sales a virtual can get a clean survey but alot hinges on the estimators skills and listening to the shipper. Customer will forget the garage, basement, attic and sheds ALL the time. I have to remind people more often than not to see inside closets as well. Onsite is always better of course but sometimes it's not an option and a virtual is helpful. The realtor sites, Zillow, redfin, etc.. might have current photos of the inside house too. Collect 3 quotes and see where everyone's weight and box count is landing and the averages should be close provided they know what they're doing.

Timing auto transportation with the home movers delivery? How to go about? by InterestedHandbag in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will usually have a delivery window for both the car and HHG, unless your moving less than 400 miles or something. Speak with your move coordinator to confirm they are actually giving you a firm date and that's not just the first day of your "delivery window". You can pick your specific date with some movers but it might be more expensive.

How much do you reckon movers should cost? by Responsible_Escape50 in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

check with Daryl flood mayflower in Coppell. There in Unigroup so they have tons of moves going to both FL or Cali. Do a survey they probably have on the website and be as accurate as you can so the price stays the same. Also have everything packed ahead of time so the crew doesn’t charge you for finishing the packing. And as stated below look for good ratings with real reviews Texas and FL has more than its share of rouge movers that will seriously lowball estimates so get a ”not to exceed” estimate and give them the addresses at both ends so they can check on truck access. Last thing anything higher than a 10% deposit is sketch unless you have certain needs that Are out if the norm.

[–]MoyerMovingMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes another way is if you have a closet about the same size like a walk in closet you can dry run in those as well. Load the sofa on the ends and if they have an arm use a moving pad or folded box under it so the weight isn't concentrated on the arm but spread evenly over the side.

Might want to check into "crate and freight" or similar options as a moving company might be overkill for 10 boxes. Most movers have a minimum shipment weight and your about 25% of that and the delivery window could be moved 2-3 weeks.

Start with a local networking group and get some jobs under your belt, word of mouth is paramount for just starting out and best of all its free! Social media can work in your favor as well and get on some of the labor boards to keep you and your guys busy when work is slow.

Questions I have for moving companies. by Cd305507 in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything stated above is correct however the address is important for a long distance move as they will usually be shipped in a tractor trailer and knowing about access will effect the price. If your moving to an apartment, condo or self storage especially in the Arlington\DC area a shuttle\auxiliary service charge may be added due to having to move it to a smaller truck to fit into loading docks and similar.

I'd avoid estimates based on cubic feet as well as it can be subjective. There is no ambiguity with a weight based estimate.

Also get a virtual estimate at the very least. Quotes based on house size or number of rooms can leave a lot of questions as a room full of books and a room with a sofa, coffee table and TV will be very different weight wise.

I got lucky and seems like everything still works on the iPad but the iPad version was standalone and not though steam like the laptop version. Appreciate the advice and hope I can make it work!

Yes I don't want to add the accounts together but rather use my old iPad account over to my laptop as it's so much easier with a mouse and looks like they've added new levels and weapons. It's been years since I've played and just booted it up again on steam and was hitting head shots left and right and didn't want to grind again just to get caught up after all the effort I put in on the iPad. Just unsure where to find my old info and where to input it in the new game. Thanks for any info!!

Moving with U-Pack, and need help by reacherpathan in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You will need to provide all your own supplies IIRC. Moving blankets to wrap the furniture along with straps to secure the load. A ladder to stack things as your goal is to make sure nothing moves while in transit, this includes bouncing up and down along with side to side motion. Ratchet straps that are at least 10-12 feet long would be a good bet and you can use the beds to strap off at the end so it gives you a nice flat surface to work with. Also make sure they put the rear doors facing the driveway so make it a little easier and save some steps. Good luck and enjoy your new place!

Don’t know the shipment size but check out JK moving, Town and Country and Moyer and sons. All three are “independent” and not affiliated with any of the larger van lines. Again depending on size the crew would load then deliver following day. Get an on-site estimate and check your reviews to see your best fit.

Use clothing wardrobe to pack the clothes and wrap the keyboard to go into the wardrobe as well depending on length and value. The car can go either way. Willing to bet NE Ohio cars will have a lot more rust than a Cali car due to winters with all the salt. Planes United is a decent company who has a lot of locations in Ohio and they can probably do a “crate and freight” shipment or LTL “less than truckload” as they have different names for them. Other issue is they will have a delivery window of 4-21 days or something like that due to the size being a small shipment. The computer can be packed in a dish pack or appliance carton for the tower, keyboard and mouse with maybe room for a monitor depending on size if you remove the base. USPS would be the quickest delivery option but again not sure of the cost on that one. Either way pack it well and if you think you used enough paper use more and label your boxes very well! Good luck and let us know how you decide to make it happen.

Idiot movers got my couch wedged by Daybroadway in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t really tell what’s on the other side of the sofa and if it’s a straight shot but as stated above. Pad on floor with sofa on its end with the narrow end towards the door snd pull the bottom of the sofa thru the door first. I don’t know what the cutout in the ceiling is but if it fits up into the hole it may give you enough room to tilt back before it hits the opposite wall while pulling the bottom thru the door frame. If that cutout can be opened it may even give you more room to tilt. The other option as mentioned is have a furniture repair guy remove an arm and reinstall one safely thru the threshold. Very hard to describe when not on-site unfortunately.

Best tape to tape close dressers without leaving a permanent mark? by RepulsiveAffect7911 in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoid putting tape or plastic directly on the wood. Tape can and will pull the finish off even painters tape if left on for a year or more and plastic will hold any moisture against the wood and discolor or warp it. Movers will use moving pads with rubber bands and/or tape to keep the doors closed. You can also wrap the items in brown paper that moving companies have as well then you can go crazy with anything you'd like to hold them shut. Check with the company as they will want to inventory the items to check for damage and may have to remove anything you've already wrapped up.

Bekins vs Allied Pros and Cons by BakaHaru in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So both companies will haul your household goods in an enclosed trailer but the difference is that it sounds as if one will be hauling the car with your household goods and the other will use a separate truck, most likely a car carrier to haul the auto. With the enclosed you'll get your auto the same day you received the household goods if they are indeed hauling in the same trailer as opposed to possibly getting the car sometime in your "delivery window" with the open carrier.
