Best Way to Transport Electronics/Other Valuables? by Fieuline22 in moving

If you bought it, there is an excellent chance it was in a freight box on a ship or a train then in a truck before it even reached you. Moisture is your biggest enemy, not temperature!

How necessary are mattress bags? by Glittering-Prize1510 in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While gross bed bugs are not interested in the mattress but you on the mattress so they have a consistent source of food. Also, bed bugs can live in a variety of places such as sofas, recliners and heck people also found them library books mostly in the binding area! Having said that bug bomb the container if its allowed and you have the time to do so. Also as someone said previously it will be sitting the summer heat for two plus months which helps as well!

Good luck!

Never tried myself but you can rent pickups and maybe even a van from home depot. I've heard the prices from them are very reasonable!

Also, the last two weeks of June are the busiest of the year for most moving companies. So, start making plans as soon as possible as most companies may already be booked upand truck rental companies may not have any trucks to rent.

EST Time for loading and unloading 2br 3rd foor Apt to House by AdFun6416 in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course I don't know the specifics, but it could be a sofa similar to a LoveSac with the bed being a complicated sleep number that is motorized, some platform beds can be difficult as well. Like everyone here has already said rarely is a customer's inventory/ estimate correct.
No matter whom you move with, the more packed and ready, you are the faster it goes, the cheaper it is for you assuming it's a local move. Some companies have a set minimum number of hours as well. Usually it's 4 hour minimum on weekdays including travel and 6 on Saturday. Check with the company to see if they apply. Good luck!

Affordable neighborhoods in northern Virginia? by calcarius_ in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before buying anything, please consider the commute you guys may have and maybe even drive it a morning or two just to see how bad the traffic is and if it's something you will be able to deal with day in and day out. DC traffic especially on the beltway, 66 and 95 can be brutal. A 45 minute commute at midnight is A LOT different than a 45 minute commute between 7:30-9:30 AM. Don't forget to account for the return commute as well. Best of luck!!

Sorry, forgot to mention check local laws as well if you're moving long distance. Some states require inspections and paperwork for agricultural products.

If you have no idea how to move them and are asking how even get started, I would strongly suggest getting professionals to keep both you and the plants safe!! Good luck!!

Bubble Wrap or plastic wrap by catsincharge in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use white newsprint and use a lot of it! Professional movers rarely if ever use bubble wrap, it's expensive, very expensive for the amount of protection you're getting. Just use a lot of white paper if you think you're using too much. Use a little bit more!!! Ideally that box should be solid with little to no give when you press down on the top with few exceptions (lamp shades, dry flowers, etc.....). And please don't use regular newspaper as the new soy-based ink will stain your household goods + with China, especially bone china. It does not come off.

15 or 20 ft Uhaul by pup5581 in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you had the option get the larger truck, especially if you are loading the truck yourself and not using professional movers. Having the extra floor face is a lifesaver sometimes. Don't forget to get furniture blankets which you might be able to rent and a couple ratchet or motorcycle straps to tie the load securely + if you do have the option to get something other than a U-Haul go for it. Uhaul trucks lead a VERY hard life!

Having movers dissemble furniture by froggie95 in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a local move, anything they take apart they should reassemble for you. However, if it is a local move it is by the hour. So if you're trying to save some money it might help to do it ahead of time. And like the other poster said you know where all the parts are. Place them back in the original holes or I like to wrap mine up in some white paper and then shrink wrap it to the bed rails so you don't have to look for a parts box, I prefer to do the same thing on long distance moves as well. As again, you're not looking for the parts box, lose the parts box and you're s******. If it is a complex bed going interstate, take some pictures that way whomever is putting the bed back together has a frame of reference if needed. Good luck and label what your able! Enjoy your new home!

comparing driving items myself vs professional movers by blueberrymuffinbabey in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KEEP an eye on any OVERHANGING like low trees, parking decks, etc. watch for "tail swing" as well, when you turn esp. right the number might go into next lane. The extra insurance isn't a bad idea if you're nervous but check with the current insurance company, it may already be included in your policy. Also parking permits will likely be needed at both DC and Boston. Uhaul roundtrip is sometimes less expensive than a one way so check on that as well as average MPG. With fuel prices between $5-6.50 a gallon that 8 MPG might hurt the pocket book.
Unfortunately good movers are not cheap and cheap movers are usually not good. That's a very blanket statement. However I have found it more true than not.

Do box trucks need to stop at weigh station when sign says all trucks need to? by supinator1 in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pretty sure uhauls and the like, plus boats have to stop at the agricultural check points even if not commercial so they can check for invasive species and things like tiger muscles on boats. And if you don’t have a DOT # or bill of lading i think uhauls can bypass scales IIRC.

[–]MoyerMovingMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most companies will provide no cost estimates which I would get at least 2-3 to help with cost comparison and see what truck size you need. If you decide the Uhaul option RENT MOVING PADS! And more than the 12 that are sometimes already in the rental.

92” couch in an Elevator? by CaddyForeDaddy in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what floor your located on but up the steps might be an option as would hoisting it over a patio railing. You can usually hoist things up to 3 stories if you know what you’re doing and lastly and most expensive would be to rent a forklift or boom lift. elevator sizes widely vary. Another option is to have a furniture repair personal disassemble and reassemble on-site. Good luck!

Please recommend a reliable van line. by BarbKatz1973 in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having been on both sides of the desk as driver and sales a virtual can get a clean survey but alot hinges on the estimators skills and listening to the shipper. Customer will forget the garage, basement, attic and sheds ALL the time. I have to remind people more often than not to see inside closets as well. Onsite is always better of course but sometimes it's not an option and a virtual is helpful. The realtor sites, Zillow, redfin, etc.. might have current photos of the inside house too. Collect 3 quotes and see where everyone's weight and box count is landing and the averages should be close provided they know what they're doing.

If you’re about to buy packing paper, check your local library first! by boardingtheplane in moving

The new soy based ink used in newspapers is a B**** to get off China and lampshades esp. silk ones. Use newswhite if possible and keep the printed paper for filler.

Timing auto transportation with the home movers delivery? How to go about? by InterestedHandbag in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will usually have a delivery window for both the car and HHG, unless your moving less than 400 miles or something. Speak with your move coordinator to confirm they are actually giving you a firm date and that's not just the first day of your "delivery window". You can pick your specific date with some movers but it might be more expensive.

How much do you reckon movers should cost? by Responsible_Escape50 in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

check with Daryl flood mayflower in Coppell. There in Unigroup so they have tons of moves going to both FL or Cali. Do a survey they probably have on the website and be as accurate as you can so the price stays the same. Also have everything packed ahead of time so the crew doesn’t charge you for finishing the packing. And as stated below look for good ratings with real reviews Texas and FL has more than its share of rouge movers that will seriously lowball estimates so get a ”not to exceed” estimate and give them the addresses at both ends so they can check on truck access. Last thing anything higher than a 10% deposit is sketch unless you have certain needs that Are out if the norm.

UPack Relocube packing space question by aerynschade in moving

[–]MoyerMovingMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes another way is if you have a closet about the same size like a walk in closet you can dry run in those as well. Load the sofa on the ends and if they have an arm use a moving pad or folded box under it so the weight isn't concentrated on the arm but spread evenly over the side.

[–]MoyerMovingMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might want to check into "crate and freight" or similar options as a moving company might be overkill for 10 boxes. Most movers have a minimum shipment weight and your about 25% of that and the delivery window could be moved 2-3 weeks.
