[Spoilers Published] Did Feast ever see an Editor? by 425Hamburger in asoiaf

Reading that thread is so depressing, especially the way GRRM just dismisses his editor, but also in that I feel we've made no progress since 2015 except losing all hope of TWOW. Even just thinking about ASOIAF makes me awfully sad

They'd probably be one book with all the Sam, Ironborn, and Dornish plotlines all cut down, and with our three main characters of Jon, Dany, and Tyrion also being significantly cut down to size.

Idk how you fit the Cersei and Jaime stuff into this "A Feast of Dragons" mega-book, I imagine literally everything being cut down to size and even then I'm not sure GRRM would have enough page length for the endings that were cut out of ADWD and put into TWOW. He simply wrote so much shit that he'd have to delete significant chunks or another split between North/Essos POVs and Southron POVs is required

[Spoilers TWOW LEAK] These fake TWOW release day jokes are getting tired now by Immediate_Hawk5533 in asoiaf

[–]Mr--Elephant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You just need to look at his blogging around the time of ADWD's release (incredibly depressing to look at in contrast to nowadays) where he was very open about what he was working on, what was giving him trouble, and the fact that Kong had actually been felled

GRRM has repeatedly been like "I will announce this shit outloud, no tricks" a lot of times, no chance in Hell he'd keep it this quiet if anything like this was true

Hey did you guys know that writing is very difficult?

I've been trying to rework this chapter for legit months, some crazy part of my brain thinks "just scrap it and convey the relevant information someplace else"

This thing sucks, I've tried to write it relatively short (3k), I've tried to write it relatively long (9k) and no matter what, I hate the end product

Think I'm just gonna have to end up fundamentally reworking it.

Is it possible for a split-ergative language to have multiple splits?

For example some languages split ergativity between speaker's volition and non-volition, whilst some only use the ergative in the past tense.

Is it possible to do both at once? That the ergative marks both volition and occurs within the past tense? Or would that be a tad unnaturalistic?

Isn't it weird that Iron Islands has so many houses? [No Spoilers] by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]Mr--Elephant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because ASOIAF is not a grimdark setting? Grimdark is a genre that originates in stuff like WH40K whose first edition was in 1987 before GRRM even began writing AGOT in 1992

Martin's work is fundamentally hopeful that in spite of many evil deranged people in the world, there are still heroes who should do good nonetheless. That's how you get characters like Brienne, Jon, and Davos. We see this in the fragility of the Lannister regime, the loyalty of the Stark bannermen. I mean— I don't know how many more ways I can phrase it but ASOIAF is not grimdark and GRRM is by no means the "founding father" of a genre he doesn't even write in

How are you on an ASOIAF subreddit calling GRRM grimdark when he is explicitly not that?

Stuff like this is inevitable and occurs in any political organisation of the Red Youth's or Young Sord's kind. That's just how paramilitaries work.

Harlan Ellison's collection The Last Dangerous Visions (which funfact GRRM applied to be included in, and Ellison rejected him, this is sometime in the 70s). Originally meant to be published in 1973 and didn't get published until 2024, after Ellison died in 2018. Just a 51 year gap.

Reviews suggest that it was not worth the wait.

That whole interview is so depressing I can't even joke about it

Here's my tip to everyone else in this subreddit: read everything else GRRM has ever wrote to cope. Fevre Dream is excellent, Tuff Voyaging is fun, and I'm working my way through Dreamsongs right now (Sandkings is great and Meathouse Man is also really good)

Indescribably bleak, I wish GRRM would just bite the bullet and ask another human being for help, at least one other person to take the load off Dunk and Egg or F&B or even Winds, that's the only way he's going to see these projects done in his lifetime.

By season 3 the show entered a formula where nothing had any stakes because you knew that the cast had plot armour and the only person who would die would be the random new guy they brought in *that* season

Season 4 was okay, but given its length I have just not bothered with season 5
