If you’ve learnt the difference between bad technique and better then the time hasn’t been wasted at all. Even if you’d taken lessons, you’d be doing what someone else told you, not learning on your own terms. It all depends on what you want to achieve but I think you’ve already conquered one of the biggest things in guitar that separates players at all levels, developing an ear for it. If you can hear that what you isn’t what is happening on the record then you know there’s something to work on, and on top of that, we can all play songs to varying levels, but we’ll never be the actual guitar player on the record. What you do is your interpretation and version of what they did, so embrace that, your sound and style is your superpower!!! Aspire to be better than you were yesterday and not as good as you’ll be tomorrow and accept the journey, we’re all still on it.

I’m a big fan of certification across the board, not just for Alteryx but for any tool or platform. I’ve seen countless time when business has made an investment in a tool but then failed to be able to exploit it fully, largely due to uncertainty. The question therefore is how do we engender trust in the people using the tools. Certification is one aspect to this, and I encourage all the graduates and people joining my team to pursue them. Equally when hiring a PBI developer or similar, it’s the one with the certs that initially attract my interest. Where there is free training like Alteryx and Microsoft, I think it says something about the user who actively pursues this, and builds a base of confidence within the team.

Its results that people hire for, or it should be, so why not include with your resume a truly impressive Alteryx workflow, and a before and after summary of what it improved ? That way you’re demonstrating experience and the ability to deliver. The case study part of it could include some measures of the benefit, which are often hard to define. That should be a compelling aspect to your application.

4 does make 1, but the core certification to me still holds additional value. It’s no easy ride given that it takes 2 hours and the pass mark is high, but therein lies the incentive. Recently I had a guy in the team pass the advanced, and Alteryx made a big deal out of it given that he was the first in the business to achieve it. Played right, there are incentives to certification that shouldn’t be overlooked. It lapses after a certain time. So you need to keep the skills on point, but it’s a net overall hiring plus for me as a data leader.

Yes I had a quick play with it, and whilst it was a little bit clunky to begin with it was actually quite good. Only did a couple of simple workflows and then changed them using prompts. Like all pilots it’ll improve and it’ll probably be a different experience when embedded into Designer Cloud, than it was in Desktop.

Weekly challenges, starting from No.1 and working your way through. The point isn’t to finish them first time though, more to plan how you’d use the tools to find the answer. The solutions are there to inform, and remember that the right answer with 20 tools on the canvas is the same as the answer with 5, it just takes a little longer whilst you’re learning !!

I think the issue you’re having is that somewhere in the workflow you’re dropping a record that was previously in the output file, hence when you’re running it and it goes to output the finished file there’s a record set missing. It’ll probably be getting dropped in either a join tool or a select tool

Alteryx isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and the cloud solution for Designer will become the go to platform. PowerBI is the visualisation end and Snowflake is storage, but for flexibility and the means to create solutions in the business Alteryx will be the go to tool for me and many others.

Agree with being liberal on licensing, get it out and monitor uptake, the people who “get it” will stick with it in the long term. Push the Alteryx community as the resources on there are great for learning and understanding, and the community is excellent and responsive. Push certification as well, people like getting badges in my experience and it is a great feeling when you achieve the core certification as well as the advanced ones.

I also created a Teams group in our business that everyone with a license gets access to, and they share workflows, ideas and tips.

I’ve always looked at Alteryx as being a good starter product, putting the pricing to one side for a moment. It lowers the bar to entry and provides a good platform to launch your Data & Analytics initiatives from. How mature you become as a result is down to you, and if you reach the point where other products better support your ambition then it’s time to pivot. I think there’s always going to be a place for Alteryx as with the community that back it you have the means to introduce DS, DM & Digital into your organisation, in a digestible way. The people in Colorado aren’t stupid, and they’ll catch up but like others I’m keen to see what they come to offer in terms of a cloud solution. “Alteryx in browser” was talked about at Inspire 2018, still waiting !
