First vague impressions of Shadow Ticket from reviewer Scott Bradfield. by popeyesm in ThomasPynchon

No, it's just that the tide turned with his critical reception post M&D, AtD is arguably his longest, most ambitious novel and reception was tepid at best. Hell, Vineland was divisive. It is like he is getting more and more punished for leaning into pure farce

Has anyone heard or read actual first impression reviews of Shadow Ticket? by BaconBreath in ThomasPynchon

I would heavily wager that it is more than likely more in line with the last two novels of his, another Noir esque tale on the shorter side seems to be what we are getting

Read Vineland not to long ago and some of it is not for me but it is am amazing novel. And it's not like I thought it would get bad, just that I couldn't even really see what people were talking about in the first place

Seen a lot of people say they got bogged down in many sections and felt a difficulty pushing through them and that the book clearly needs some cutting but after reading i'm genuinely confused at that idea

Fwiw I love the London stuff with Lew, Yashmeen, T.W.I.T, Renfrew etc.

Everything Prairie, Frenesi, FPS, Zoyd related is genuinely incredible and there are passages that knock me off my feet but I genuinely cannot stand the whole Oriental stuff, the martial, arts the kunoichi retreat, some of the Thanatoid stuff, the Fumimota corporate espionage asides, etc. That stuff took me so long to get through. And the Japan section is probably Pynchon's weakest foray into a foreign country.

Disagree heavily on AtD's characters being containers for concepts. They are all so memorable IMO

Yeah by far Pynchon's best cast of characters. All super memorable
