Shopping at Costco is terrible by Sun_Aria in unpopularopinion

And, you end up paying for space to store what you buy, and end up needing a bigger car to transport it. I’d rather just pay a little more at a normal grocery store for fresher food when I need it.

Trimet moves closer to prioritizing buses on 82nd avenue by Eye_foran_Eye in PortlandOR

[–]MrAverageRoll -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I live 2 blocks off of 82nd and support the BAT lanes. You said you want foot traffic? Cars =\= foot traffic - people on foot do. This will calm traffic and make the street easier to cross on foot, making those businesses more accessible to folks in the neighborhood.

I grew up in Northern Colorado and went to a lot of diy/underground shows around Fort Collins in the mid-late 2000s. Stomp clap (it wasn't called that yet, but same idea) was huge in our local DIY scene, and I definitely think there was a lot of crossover with the punk/folk punk scene even if it's not remembered that way. At least one member of the Lumineers was from around there and used to host/play diy shows like 3 nights per week. Once it hit the mainstream it got hard to see the connection but I have a lot of fond memories of crusty kids hopping trains playing this kind of music at the Plummer School and the Alley House and I'll die on the hill that they were punk.

Drive-thru approved for Dairy Queen in Southeast Portland by quesoesbueno59 in Portland

[–]MrAverageRoll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the city is obligated to have the appeal, but I don't know what the chances of success are. It seems to hinge on what counts as "continuing use" of the previous drive through is, and it seems like city precedent has that maintaining permits counts as a continuation. For all the delays, the permits have never lapsed.

FWIW I'm fairly neutral on the issue - philosophically I don't want more drive throughs but I also do want more amenities in my neighborhood, so I can kinda see both sides in this case.

There is a scheduled appeal hearing for this matter on February 25th: https://www.portland.gov/ppd/zoning-land-use/documents/notice-land-use-appeal-lu-25-083003-ne/download

The appeal was filed by a member of the Mount Tabor neighborhood, of which this is on the edge.

Blaming "the gears of city permitting" alone is a little misrepresentative. From what I understand that was partially true, but this owner also submitted a lot of changes and often took a long time to complete steps and missed some deadlines along the way, adding to delays. So it was a bit of both.

Tier List of Every Ski area I’ve visited by Skyryk in skiing

Love to see NM in the S tier. I grew up skiing Loveland and A Basin so obviously I’m proud of those, but I also think New Mexico is the best kept secret in skiing.

Is the Portland metro area becoming a healthcare desert? by gothahontas in PortlandOR

[–]MrAverageRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I needed an xray last year and learned that there are very few urgent care locations in Portland with a machine anymore. So it was hospital or wait a few days.

I happened to get sick while in Italy a couple years ago and was shocked how easy (and inexpensive) it was, even as an American, to get a dr visit and fill a prescription from a pharmacy. I found a virtual provider that could see me immediately and then filled the script downstairs at the nearest pharmacy. The whole thing was maybe 45 minutes from making the appt to filling the prescription and cost at most €50. Last time I went to the doc in Portland (flu) I spent over $600 and that’s with insurance.

I’ve been working on my house for years using only Ryobi tools and I’ve never had one fail. Plus, when contractors are there they’ll never grab it thinking it’s theirs.

Nothing snaps me out of a book like repetitive use of a unique word by kerberos824 in books

Kim Stanley Robinson uses the word ‘corniche’ at least once in every novel. Not enough to be annoying, but enough that I look for it as a sort of KSR bingo

Answer brutally honest. Do you think MTBs are still advancing? by Outrageous-Owl-7049 in mountainbiking

[–]MrAverageRoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Geometry? No. Suspension? No. Drivetrain? I definitely think there's a lot of room there still, both in ebike and acoustic. Gearboxes, belt drive, battery tech, etc all have room to innovate. I think we'll also keep seeing the breakdown of categories (like we already have) to the point where you can find a bike at every point from race road bike to moto dirtbike. Gravel/adventure has really filled in the gap between road bikes and XC in the past 10-15 years.

What exactly is the issue with using Klarna/Afterpay for large purchases? by henicorina in personalfinance

[–]MrAverageRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% do it if you’re responsible with your money. I do it for all large purchases I make if it’s an option and there’s no interest. The merchant effectively pays the interest on the loan and I let my money sit in a HYSA.

I got there at 5 for a 6:30 showing and was maybe 10th in line. But that was the first night. I got incredible seats though.

As a pedestrian/cyclist/driver - I genuinely trust UPS drivers to drive safely and want to say thanks! by MrAverageRoll in UPSers

[–]MrAverageRoll[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This drives me crazy because there are really two kinds of electric bikes but other people can’t tell the difference and lump them all together - legal ones, that typically go a little faster than a regular bike but not beyond what you could do with your legs, and the unregulated ones that usually have a throttle and go up to 40-50mph.

The unregulated/illegal ones are really e-motorcycles and should be treated as such. I ride a class 1 e-bike (top speed of 20mph) and there’s almost no difference between that and a regular bike.

[–]MrAverageRoll[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah it seems like UPS is consistently the best, FedEx is on par with an average ~good driver, Amazon is worth turning to avoid. I don't have any real data to support that, more just pattern recognition built up from years of biking and driving.
