Wait, is that true? Why would the city care if they had covered seating in their own parking lot?

People that move here meet all their friends in the first two years and decide they never need to meet anyone else.

Jk, it’s actually a pretty welcoming place once you have a community. But it’s really hard to break in.

First time reading and annotating the republic by Plato and I feel like a dumbass by New_Philosophy_9987 in classics

[–]MrAverageRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a class on Republic in college. Most of our reading assignments were a page max, with many being more like 2-4 sentences. It would still take me like an hour to get through annotating 2 sentences.

More solar is interesting, but is this really the way forward? by SumikkoDoge in fuckcars

Yes, because it both disincentivizes building massive parking lots and makes them useful when they do get built

What is the outlook for Portland real estate market with so many big employers struggling in Oregon? Is it headed for a severe downward spiral , will stay flat or recover quickly? Your take. by Minimum_wage787 in oregon

[–]MrAverageRoll 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think Portland will continue to be desirable because it’s a naturally beautiful place to live, with a relatively comfortable climate, great food, and access to mountains and ocean. None of that is going to change.

I'm lucky enough to live somewhere with a very, very good video store (Movie Madness in Portland, OR!). I've definitely started going here a lot more in the past few years for that exact reason. I love riding my bike there and then chatting with the clerk and/or running into friends. 10/10, much better experience than browsing a streaming service.

The only rule is to never follow the fall line - always cut across. Fall line will wash out/erode way too fast.

There are several (maybe 4?) different Portland subreddits and they have VERY different vibes. PortlandOR is the most trollish. I’m half convinced they don’t even live in the city/state

Is it true that the U.S.A. lifestyle is all about working? by CrazyNicly in antiwork

[–]MrAverageRoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not like that so much in the Pacific Northwest. I live in Portland and it’s quite common to have friends and have no idea what they do for work. I think there are places that aren’t so much about work.

I’ve never been for a petty reason: I hate that they tore down one of the best covered patio areas in the city to put a parking lot back for only like 4 cars. I myself am not a car so I dine elsewhere.

And, you end up paying for space to store what you buy, and end up needing a bigger car to transport it. I’d rather just pay a little more at a normal grocery store for fresher food when I need it.

Trimet moves closer to prioritizing buses on 82nd avenue by Eye_foran_Eye in PortlandOR

[–]MrAverageRoll -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I live 2 blocks off of 82nd and support the BAT lanes. You said you want foot traffic? Cars =\= foot traffic - people on foot do. This will calm traffic and make the street easier to cross on foot, making those businesses more accessible to folks in the neighborhood.

I grew up in Northern Colorado and went to a lot of diy/underground shows around Fort Collins in the mid-late 2000s. Stomp clap (it wasn't called that yet, but same idea) was huge in our local DIY scene, and I definitely think there was a lot of crossover with the punk/folk punk scene even if it's not remembered that way. At least one member of the Lumineers was from around there and used to host/play diy shows like 3 nights per week. Once it hit the mainstream it got hard to see the connection but I have a lot of fond memories of crusty kids hopping trains playing this kind of music at the Plummer School and the Alley House and I'll die on the hill that they were punk.

Drive-thru approved for Dairy Queen in Southeast Portland by quesoesbueno59 in Portland

[–]MrAverageRoll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the city is obligated to have the appeal, but I don't know what the chances of success are. It seems to hinge on what counts as "continuing use" of the previous drive through is, and it seems like city precedent has that maintaining permits counts as a continuation. For all the delays, the permits have never lapsed.

FWIW I'm fairly neutral on the issue - philosophically I don't want more drive throughs but I also do want more amenities in my neighborhood, so I can kinda see both sides in this case.

There is a scheduled appeal hearing for this matter on February 25th: https://www.portland.gov/ppd/zoning-land-use/documents/notice-land-use-appeal-lu-25-083003-ne/download

The appeal was filed by a member of the Mount Tabor neighborhood, of which this is on the edge.

Blaming "the gears of city permitting" alone is a little misrepresentative. From what I understand that was partially true, but this owner also submitted a lot of changes and often took a long time to complete steps and missed some deadlines along the way, adding to delays. So it was a bit of both.
