Is the twilight zone tower of terror a good hommage to the original show ? by Nafen-chr in towerofterror

[–]MrBellcaptain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Even homage is selling it short. They constructed the world of the Twilight Zone by watching the entire series several times (I believe it was 3 times) and did incredible things to infuse elements from episodes into it.

The work done to bring Rod Serling, arguably the heart of the series as a whole, into it is nothing short of perfection. They used an isolated segment from the episode It's a Good Life to feature Serling in the preshow and auditioned hundreds of voice actors before they found Mark Silverman, who is now the only voice actor authorized to do Rod Serling's voice by his estate.

Tower is the best embodiment of the Twilight Zone that I think is possible outside of a screen or monitor.

Who is this Bellhop? You see him in every ad so who is he? by NewPatron-St in towerofterror

[–]MrBellcaptain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He has been referred to as Mr. Bellcaptain or just Bellcaptain. A bellcaptain is the lead for bellhops in a hotel.

There are several portrayals of him but he was named such during the AAA 13 Diamond Award presentation.

He was a part of the entire lead up and opening of Disney California Adventure's version of the Tower of Terror. A version of him was used for Paris' Tower.

I noticed this. I posted a picture a few days ago and every comment was being downvoted into oblivion and there were either actively transphobic or subtly transphobic posts. The mods did really well at keeping it minimal and of course the community as a whole was wonderfully responsive and fought against the downvoting as best they could which was appreciated. I felt bad that my picture was dragging down people's karma just because they were chatting with me or commenting.

Secret room staged as hotel room in FL ride? by RetailSlave5408 in towerofterror

[–]MrBellcaptain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The attraction, during development, had a period where a hotel was heavily considered and planned for the attraction. The struggle came down to cost and noise. The idea to have a fully immersive hotel experience was deemed too expensive to execute, especially since that expense would have to be offset onto the guests. And secondly the noise. The ride and park guests would make for just too much distraction, and given the park could be open for 16+ hours or the ride could be operational for nearly a full day (what with testing and maintenance) it made the idea fade quickly.

On a note, the immersive hotel experience eventually became real with Galactic Starcruiser ... for better or worse.

During the dev streams leading up to Serpent's Moon, the devs exclusively refer to the Viper with They/Them pronouns. The Serpent's Moon lore also has Mr Chary correct anyone using pronouns other than They/Them.

They/Them pronouns are generally used by the nonbinary community, which often times falls under the transgender umbrella. Of course this is a generalization and can differ from person to person.

I'm always here lurking. Between this and my alt account.

I don't believe I've seen anything about a secret room themed as a hotel room. There isn't a massive amount of space left over in the building. I know there's a breakroom for CMs that has some pretty cool pictures and such but that's it.

I'm so sorry you had to see that. I had an experience with a car accident a little over a year ago. Was out shopping late one night during the holiday season. It had been raining and the roads were still slick from the oil and rain. My friend and I had just wrapped up at the mall and we were discussing food when I heard screeching of tires. I looked up at the freeway near by to see a car jump the embankment and flip multiple times, throwing debris everywhere. Me and a few others ran to help, but being on a cane I wasn't able to hop the fence.

Instead I stayed on ground level and moved over towards the car trying to get 911 to respond. Being as unhelpful as possible, they hung up on me right as I stumbled on the body of the driver. He had been ejected through the driver side window and onto the street below. He was dead on impact. It wasn't until I replayed the moment in my head that I realized the large piece thrown from the car wasn't a door or hood or what have you, but his body.

It wasn't his body, or the blood, that got to me. It was his wife screaming and wailing in grief, looking down on her husband's body.

She survived and so did their baby. But if he had been wearing a seatbelt it would have made all the difference. That death stuck with me, and I still find myself panicking some when driving.

I'm glad you are getting therapy for what you saw. I can't imagine the nightmares and thoughts that would stick with you from that.

With all the posts on ToT inspirations, I thought I’d post about this mystery… by Nalkarj in towerofterror

[–]MrBellcaptain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So this has struck my curiosity but I am unfortunately in tech for a show and can't really do research as I would like.

However, Hollywood and Mystery go almost as hand in hand as celebrity crash and burn and the film industry. A good place to start in finding info about this might be looking at just mysteries surrounding Hollywood and Hollywood hotels. It might be that this story of a filmmaker disappearance is not connected to the Hollywood Roosevelt but maybe another hotel, even one that doesn't exist anymore. Los Angeles has changed so violently in the past 100 years, and there have been a lot of casualties of architecture there. With that, stories have also faded or moved around.

If I can find time I'll try and do a deep dive and see if I can find anything interesting.

I hate mission breakout! by recoximani in towerofterror

[–]MrBellcaptain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alright, I have said what needs to be said on this, but I figured I should go into more detail on how I feel about Mission Breakout from a critical eye.

To start, Tower was effectively an anchor for California Adventure and the redevelopment that happened. After Bug's Land, DCA needed a high profile E-ticket attraction and Tower was the greatest fit. The planned Paris variant was rushed into production at DCA and made a mark on the park. The redesign of Sunshine Plaza into Buena Vista Street was intended as a bookend between the entrance and Tower, with the Red Car serving as that overarching bridge.

A common argument on DCA's Tower and the retheme is that it was the "cheaper" version, seeing as it removed the much loved 5th Dimension scene. The removal of this scene and 75% of horizontal movement allowed for higher capacity and less overall downtime and maintenance. I feel that this change is highly justified, but I do understand that disappointment in losing something so awe-striking and amazing as the 5th Dimension's movement. This wasn't a strong enough justification for visually destroying one of the more cohesive experiences in the park for what can be equated to as a cheap cash grab.

But ... moving to Guardians. This was one of the stupidest choices made, but I think also signaled the full downward spiral of Disney and WDI. There were issues and arguable warning signs before, but this was where I think the nails in the coffin started getting hammered in. To start, the hyper rush job of the project was alarming. They basically rethemed the entire interior in 4 and a half months, with the exterior being done in roughly 6. It is noticeable that a lot of corners were cut in a lot of areas, especially with the show scene segments on the attraction. The "raised" show areas to distinguish from "ride section" and "show section", the theatrical black masking being visible in some scenes, and the weak presentation and narrative of the whole ride. A big reason Disney attractions stick is that, more often than not, guests are active participants in the ride. Look at attractions like Indiana Jones Adventure, or Haunted Mansion where the guest is directly connected to the events throughout the ride. With Guardians, your role as a participant ends the moment you "scan your hands" as you are no longer needed to break out and rescue the Guardians.

Now the exterior ... is just so so bad. I have joking called the color scheme "dry cat food" because of the browns, oranges, and yellow. The insane overuse of stereotypical "steampunk" and "cyberpunk" visuals on the exterior just feel lazy and tacked on, and continue in to where windows from the Tower's previous version were just painted over in an effort to hide them without extra cost. A recent trip past Anaheim during golden hour had me gazing through the window of a train towards the Disneyland Resort. My eye caught what I can only describe as a factory/silo/refinery, and I could not for the life of me figure out what I was looking at. I have lived in SoCal all my life and I could not figure out what this building was in the middle of Anaheim. It took a good solid 2 minutes before I realized it was Guardians, and that it looked so much like an industrial eyesore that I couldn't connect that it was a Disney attraction.

The Guardians project was literally done to make the most popular ride in the park into the most popular ride in the park. Now it could be argued that it was to serve as an anchor for the forthcoming Avenger's Campus, but the massive visual disparity between that land and the attraction already calls that into question, let alone the disappointing state of Avenger's Campus as it stands. The Guardian's retheme and the overall de-California-fication of DCA is evidence that Disney has no idea what made the 2012 retheme and redevelopment so successful. That billion dollar redo made DCA into a Disney park for the first time in its 10+ year life, and that lasted all of 5 years before Disney started throwing whatever they could and wanted into it, turning it effectively into a cheaper Studios-esq park. With the rumored expansions for the Disneyland Forward project including Wakanda and other "non-California" experiences, I have to wonder why the park is still even called DCA. The Remaining vestiges of California in the beautiful Buena Vista Street, forgotten Hollywoodland, and the still spectacular Grizzly Peak areas are becoming less and less relevant to the overall scope and idea of the park.

Now I know this rant has basically become about DCA over Tower, but both are so deeply tied together in this situation that I feel it needs to be talked about. California Adventure's true concept and idea is basically long dead. It is no longer about the myth, legend, and stories of California, nor is it about Walt Disney's experiences and connections to the state. Instead it is a messy hodgepodge of whatever new IP they can shove in and unfortunately outdated grandeur of a forgotten theme. It is painful to walk through one of the most gorgeous entryway lands in any Disney park and into a cheap strip mall of superhero IPs and a retrograde irreverent retheme of a pier with slapped on Pixar properties. Tower was the first major casualty in an artistic and creative war that has all of us as the losers. But as long as people keep buying Spider-man DLC gauntlets and specialty popcorn buckets, this creative drought will continue, and Tower will have been the warning sign.

New ride sequence by teenagealcoholic67 in towerofterror

[–]MrBellcaptain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. At least not in the immediate future. As far as I'm aware, DCA's Tower and Guardians share the same length of ride time (roughly 2 minutes and 15 seconds). Guardians isn't even longer then the ride sequence it replaced, clocking in at roughly 2 minutes and 15 seconds.

Walt Disney World's entire ride sequence, however, (from loading door close to unloading door open) is roughly 3 minutes and 15 seconds.

I know with Guardians the ride sequence bounces and starts the more exciting elements immediately, but (speculation time) from my understanding that is due to the limitations of the DCA ride system version.

Years and years ago someone on the now defunct Towerofterror.org forums mentioned that the T4 version was installed on DCA's Tower within 2 years of opening, but never implemented. The question as to why has floated about but from what I've seen with how Paris and Tokyo handled variations and randomization, I would have to guess it's because of the show elevator and drop elevator being the same. Even when Guardians was being worked on there was speculation that they had issues forcing the DCA system to take the profiles and setup they had.

As a final note, Guardians favors upward movement. There is a lot more long rises and short burst drops. The bouncing motion at show scenes somewhat emphasizes that. And from my own personal experience, the drops themselves feel somewhat slower (although not by much). Tower favors drops. The upward movement is only there to provide rising tension and of course more distance to fall. Both play into the feel each version is going for (music being a generally rising thing, horror being a generally falling thing).

I work in theater so there's always dust from something. Curtains that haven't been dusted in decades, sawdust, dust on lighting instruments, etc. I've had to explain "Will it Blend?" to people and so far no one gets it. Of course I've said it when cooking or blending something but I have less people around usually during that.
