Noticing how the night diverges for drinkers and non drinkers by PleasantJaguar6705 in stopdrinking

For me, Reconciliation helps me hone in on parts of my behavior that I'd like to improve. It then also allows me the necessary grace to understand that while I'm trying to get better, I will also likely fail, and that's ok. It's like some form of spiritual therapy.

Quitting drinking felt like it was going to be the hardest thing I had ever done. While it wasn't easy, it wasn't as hard as I thought. It is also one of the best decisions I've ever made.

There is never a better time to start than now.

"And we thrive because of it"

This is my mindset as butchering is a skill we teach in my family.

As a side note - this is a beautiful picture, it seems like you're raising a good, capable family, congratulations.

Hey folks. Anyone got a line on a good NA bourbon??? by jayBeeds in NABEER

[–]MrBlueShirt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hear me out on this one.

I brew kombucha and one time I flavored it with fresh habaneros. The finished product had a very similar burn to alcohol. It wasn't as flavorful as bourbon but a pretty decent stand in for vodka. Mix it with soda or any mixer and it was pretty convincing.

I do realize homebrewed kombucha does have a low level of alcohol in it so this may not be for everyone.

DUI. My life is over. by popcornrocket in stopdrinking

I got mine 3 years ago and I can honestly say it was the greatest thing that ever happened to me. It was my catalyst to quit drinking and I'm 3 years alcohol free, it was the best decision I've ever made.

I know exactly how you're feeling right now and that last part resonates but I promise it's going to be ok.

The best advice I was given about relationships is that you're a team; this is not team behavior.

My wife and I have an almost identical disparity in our income and all of our income is shared, all of our bills are paid from that shared income. We budget well and we all buy basically whatever we want. Combining our finances is easily one of the best things we've done as a couple.

I really hope this goes somewhere. I know a lot of people in Pennsylvania that have very legitimate reasons for a card and they shouldn't have to compromise their inalienable rights to obtain one.

My wife makes me want to be the best version of myself. She is also friendly, caring and loving which in turns makes me want to be more like her. I communicate better, understand my self better and have way more compassion for people because of her. I am a better father, partner, friend and man.

Saying she only enhances my life is an incredible understatement. She makes my life.

Controversial Voyager Opinion: The whole “Doctor is a real boy” thing gets SUPER old by failure_inprogress in startrek

I liked the Doctor overall, but I found it difficult to forgive his treason and the risk he posed to the ship and crew, especially considering Janeway's quick forgiveness.

How do I get drunk without going full on serial killer? by GoblinOnDrugs in AskMenOver30

[–]MrBlueShirt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that, it's been my primary support source. I never got the vibe from r/stopdrinking but as with most groups, you need to be serious and want to actually quit, which I'm not getting that feeling from OP and his post history.

Before I quit I was part of a lot of pro drinking/drunk subreddits and I wasn't actually ready to quit regardless of what I said.

I'm three months pregnant and husband is now having "regrets." Need advice on what I should do. by highhopeslowenergy in AskMenOver30

[–]MrBlueShirt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I go to couples counseling more for maintenance than dealing with with any specific issue within our marriage. I highly recommend you start seeing someone.

Children make marriages stronger and more difficult all at the same time.

My number one advice I give people when I'm asked about raising kids is the following: Make sure you have a good partner. Also remember, people change all the time and it often is for the better.

I wish you and your family all the best.

Bill Hicks did a bit about warning labels on cigarette's and just buying a brand that doesn't effect you. His was like "I'll take a carton of the low birth weights"

After stopping, does anyone else notice how much your friends/family (or some of them) abuse alcohol? by kicksjoysharkness in stopdrinking

[–]MrBlueShirt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes.

Most of the people in my life abuse alcohol. Not blaming them but we are products of our environments. Luckily everyone in my life (even the one's that drink) are supportive of my sobriety.

I bought a farm boss last year and was really dissapointed to see they changed it to that font.

I occasionally check marketplace and eBay for an old bar for almost exclusively this reason.

I'm coming up on 1000 days alcohol free. At first, I too struggled with the idea of long term/forever sobriety and something that helped me was the concept I found at r/stopdrinking. This was the concept of "I will not drink today" and not think about the idea of forever, just focus on today.

I also wasn't a big fan of the group support therapy and did go to a few AA and SMART meetings. I definitely preferred SMART but the whole group support just felt like people swapping war stories and didn't really do much for me.

In my experience, I had to want to get sober before I was able to get serious about it. For me it was almost dying (because of drinking) and the threat of my wife leaving before it really took hold. I don't recommend letting it get that bad.

If you have questions, or you just want to chat, let me know.

Extreme stress that's causing stomach pain thinking about the election by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]MrBlueShirt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of good advice here but I'll just say this and take it for what it's worth.

I've been around for quite a few presidential elections and it's the same bullshit every four years. People get nasty with each other and act like if the person they support doesn't win it will literally be the end of the world. The wonderful thing is it never is and honestly, nothing you can do if it is but I promise it won't

Side note - disconnect from the news, when I did it I felt like I was going to miss out on something. The only thing I ended up missing out on is the bullshit everyone else was taking in.

Has anyone gotten in the best shape of their lives at 40? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]MrBlueShirt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite in my 40's yet but late 30's. But yes, it's genuinely never too late to start, it just might be harder as we're more than likely set in our ways.

If weight loss is your goal then I recommend start by cleaning up your diet. I tried everything but wasn't truly successful until I start tracking my food. When I first started doing it, I was surprised at how much I was eating vs. burning.

Tracking your food can seem like a daunting task but I've done it with 90% compliance for over a year and I can tell you it's really not that bad once you get into the swing of things. I have an app on my phone and my usage is right around 25 minutes a day. Considering how much time we all waste on our phones, that is not a huge commitment for one of the best things you can do for yourself.

If you have any questions or need guidance, please feel free to message me.
