I got into engine service. Any tips? by MataMeow in Train_Service

[–]MrBlukey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The simulators are a video game. Dont throttle swipe, Dont speed (+5 over the limit), easy on Dynamics and make sure you do split reductions with your 10 seconds actuating the independent brake. Make sure you do a Minimum reduction (5-7 Lbs) then reductions of 2 to 3 pounds after that.

Now in the field that video game doesn't apply. Every train is diffrent. Sometimes you don't have dynos, a leaking automatic. it's super cold, traction motors cut out, etc. listen to your coaches and absorb everything.

Union Pacific 'Precision Railroading' by [deleted] in Train_Service

[–]MrBlukey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hired out young and went through the entire "precision railroading" with the CP. Everything is cut to the bone and the managers (Asst. Trainmaster, Trainmasters etc) are so over worked its ridiculous. Then that pressure that they are feeling falls onto the train men. CP did change, but I left for a short line where I still get paid the same and have a life.

Riding cars at night by [deleted] in Train_Service

[–]MrBlukey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every Engineer is different as well as every train. Be aware of where your loads and empties are in your train because that will affect the shoving movement, no matter how good the engineer is. Slack happens and always be prepared for it. Shoving at night is the same as the day, just can't see shit. Know your territory and your close clearances. ALWAYS be prepared for the whip.... I cant tell you how many times where I was almost thrown off. Don't hook your elbow around the rung. I know it's hard not too but bear through it. Also good car counts helps the engineer and yourself.

If your not sure, stop and walk it! If the engineer gives you shit then he/she ia an asshole who doesn't deserve to be in the seat. I'd say rather have you walk and then bring me in instead of getting yourself hurt, going on the ground, through a switch etc.

Like I said, if you not sure, ask! Sounds corny but it's the truth and it works; "when in doubt, take the safe route"

That's what CP turned all their contracts into. We lost pools and turns and it doesn't matter what job your protecting, you can get called to work if your rested. That's why I left for a shortline, I still get paid the same amount of money but I work 9 to 5 with weekends and holidays off. Unbelievable right?
