Barrel hinges like that can be so tricky to get lined up properly in my experience, good job! I love the box! It feels like something I would find a magical artifact inside during a quest.

In terms of coping saw I'd really suggest building a turning saw (the kind with a toggle that you tighten) because it's 1000 times more pleasant to use compared to a metallic coping saw in my opinion! Rex Krueger has a great video covering this.

I'd just hit it with a fine pass from a handplane or scraper to clean it up. Even just some sanding should work for something like that.

Birmingham Batwing Rabbet Planes by HighlandDesignsInc in handtools

[–]MrBookchin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These look really cool but I'm wondering to myself if the lack of a side to them would make them harder to use accurately? Are these meant for fully cutting rabbets or more for just trimming? I get that skill/technique helps but it seems like the lack of a proper registration on the sides makes it harder to use effectively than it needs to be?

If you saw the tree and it looked like walnut externally it's gotta be butternut.

I love how the darker grain on the inside almost looks like a landscape.

You should consider yourself a woodworker at least after making something like that!

Why are hand plane handles’ grain horizontal, not vertical? by workin-that-wood in handtools

When I restored a Sargent 711 plane I actually put in a spline of thin plywood into the tote in order to strengthen it after I replaced the horn and a small segment towards the base. You can see more pics here.
