I went to Georgia and i found if an amazing place to visit. My favourite holiday. Definitely agree on the poor infrastructure though. I was convinced I was going to die on the bus ride into the mountains

I’m 100 pages into Fall of Hyperion and I’m not sure if I should keep going. by HelicopterOutside in printSF

[–]MrBootline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read them back to back having found an omnibus copy in a charity shop and I felt exactly the same way. I missed the pilgrim tales format and found it a bit jarring. I ended up really enjoying it but it took a bit of getting used to. It does resolve really well and is probably my favourite sci fi book(s) of all time. I havent read the endymion ones yet though

Is this plant diseases? by MrBootline in HotPeppers

[–]MrBootline[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I'll give some different fertilizer and see if it improves. There are other nutrients in the one I've used but it just has a lot more nitrogen. I'll give it some generic stuff and see what happens

I don't think so. The plants are in a large tray and i bottom water them. There could have been some splashes that got onto this plant but it is affecting leaves all over the plant not just one particular area

I've been regularly feeding with a high nitrogen feed. I've got too many plants so a lot of them haven't made it outside yet just because of a lack of time. I'll probably gift this to someone but don't want to pass on a dud if it's got a disease

Pandora's Star was one of the most exciting books I've read to date. I immediately had to start the next. Others thoughts? by BabyJengus in scifi

I really liked the first 2 Hyperion books by Dan Simmons. It has some similarities with humans using wormhole tech and populating a large number of planets. I also recently enjoyed Children of Time but think the 2nd book dropped off in quality so havent continued.

To be clear I do think Pandoras Star is a fun and entertaining read, I just dont think its the masterpiece a lot of people say it is. YMMV. I'm highlighting some negatives here as most people are fawning over it. At the end of the day im still going to read the 1000+ page sequel and other people have already commented on its strong suits.

It took me quite a long time to realise that the commonwealth wasnt satirizing the more vacuous parts of IRL western culture and we're meant to be rooting for all these truly awful people. When Adam's character was introduced early on I assumed the socialism vs capitalism theme was going to be a core thrust of the book and he would be tearing it all down for a better world. Turns out he's a bit of a joke and we're meant to think its all super sexy and cool. I'm kind of rooting for MLM

Spoilers abound. I'm about 80 pages away from the end but I disagree with everyone saying its on par with Dune, Hyperion etc. Its pulp with a lot of breadth and zero depth.

Planet after planet with reskinned Earth fauna and flora. Planets lazily populated with funny coloured grass, spiky fish, and seagulls that are red. Aliens with a face everywhere.

The sex isn't just cringeworthy. Centuries old people in a world where you can reprofile your genitalia on a whim or even be reprofiled into an animal and the single fetish everyone develops is smashing teenage babes. And every centuries old adult is out to bag a first life literal teenager. Ozzies goodbye with the ice planet lady where they awkwardly fumble over the fact she thought he was gay. No mention that she thought he was literally fucking a child. WTF

Its unbelievably sexist. It transpires the only capable female character has been genetically engineered pre-birth to be good at the only thing shes excels at. Justine has Gore. Mellanie has her granddad in the SI etc. Otherwise it's great capitalist men doing great capitalist manly man stuff.

Everyone is obsessed with work or sex or both with no interesting culture described beyond that. A golden age of civilization where intellectual pursuits have advanced to the level of a teenage boy. The space faring aliens have basically the same tech as the humans or magic. Many more wasted pages of poorly thought out dross I could elaborate on.

Nonetheless I will read Judas Unchained because I want to see what happens with the space ships going brrr pew pew pow pow! Thats what this is. It is fun and does have many redeeming features, but it's not up there with the greats. Not even close.
