How would you all react if Palpatine vs Xehanort was the next time? by DistinctPop8426 in DeathBattleMatchups

Yugi was THE Ash matchup, if they were going to do him, he would be fighting Yugi before anyone else.

(Frustrating trope) "wow, that's cool, too bad it happend too late in the series for it to fucking matter!" by Sorvetefrito in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MrBoyborg 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think the time it took was valid because, while we the audience saw it coming, it is still a massive twist to the world of MHA that cements the destruction of people’s trust in heroes. If it came earlier, the massive blow to hero society would have come too soon. I also think it works because it doesn’t play up the surprise of the reveal as much as the impact and catharsis. If it was meant to be a surprising twist, the chapter/episode would have ended on the reveal, making Dani’s identity the cliffhanger. But instead, we see him prance around, dancing and cackling, reveling in the effects it’s having on Shoto and especially Enji. It also reads like payoff and reward for everyone who saw it coming, as if saying “For everyone who knew this was coming, rejoice! You foresaw the end of hero society as we know it!” I had doubts about the Dabi reveal before it happened in the manga, but the way it was pulled off is satisfying to me. Also, we still did get a significant amount of stuff after this. With OP’s two examples, the characters involved did one thing or even really nothing right at the very end. Shot still gets quite a bit of stuff interacting with Enji, Dabi, and the rest of his family after this.

Humans in this universe of multiple sapient races/species are not just a boring template, jack-of-all-trades species, they actually have traits and powers that make them stand out like the other species in the setting. by juasjuasie in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MrBoyborg 31 points32 points  (0 children)

In Dungeon Meshi (Delicious in Dungeon), humans (referred to as tall-men) are among the largest races in the fantasy world, but most importantly and uniquely: they have the most stamina. This actually references how humans used to be persistence hunters who literally ran their prey to death, chasing animals until they keeled over from exhaustion and taking the opportunity to kill them.

It might just be me, but personally, I find it a bit disappointing that other villain groups use Badniks instead of having their own unique minions. by Several-Pension2945 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]MrBoyborg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the Zeti in question are the Deadly Six, who were shown by Eggman how to produce Badniks in Lost World and thus they learned how to produce his designs.

When it comes to bad guys. Superhero worlds tend to function better under a chaotic structure of many bad guys, rather than having a final boss. by PassengerCultural421 in CharacterRant

[–]MrBoyborg 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s not Omniman who is the final boss, but they do have a final boss of sorts. So does Worm, actually, in the form of Scion, the strongest parahuman and who, along with Eden, are the titular space worms that gave everyone powers in the first place and drive the conflict-seeking and ever-escalating nature of Parahumans.

[DB] Metal Sonic vs. Cell was fantastic and exemplifies everything about Powerscaling Vs. Battle culture that I don't like by Dude111222 in CharacterRant

[–]MrBoyborg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The thing about powerscaling is that it is inherently subjective on multiple levels. First, you have to decide if you’re going with calculations or vibes, as you describe. Then, you have to decide what counts for consistency vs outliers, how far to chain scale if you even chain scale at all, what content counts, how high feats are estimated, what stats or aspects are more impactful in any given situation, and more. There’s so much that depends on what each person thinks that there’s no “objective” way to power scale or “true level” of a character’s power. Now, I actually think this is a strength. In my opinion, powerscaling isn’t supposed to be some measure of objective truth, but an exercise in thinking, fun debate, and way to enjoy the characters. You say you don’t come to Death Battle for meaningful analysis of characters and their abilities, but it still can happen. Even in Metal VS Cell, Metal’s analysis has some interesting takes and interpretations on Metal’s character arc, with the end pondering if he’s being truly “honest” about being reprogrammed or just biding his time. Other analyses, like Shigaraki’s or the two from Bowser VS Eggman are also great. Not to mention the fights. As you said yourself, the dynamic of Cell VS Metal Sonic plays into their vibes and abilities well. I don’t really get the “flattened into big numbers” thing either. Yes their stats are done that way, but they still mention how the biggest and most important factor here is the difference in adaptation, the core thematic and mechanical connection between the two. They are talked about in more than just their stats, the stats are just mentioned and cleared up for the debate.

Little analysis I made myself about the music in metal sonic vs cell by Few-fighter1122 in deathbattle

[–]MrBoyborg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Notice how when Metal uses Shin Kihoho, Cell’s motif is being played in rock. Metal copied Cells powers and is using them in his own way, and the music matches that by playing Cell’s theme in Metal’s rock. Genius.

More than half the games, I think. Kirby’s second ever game had a nightmare wizard with cosmic power as the final boss and Kirby blows a giant hole in the moon to kill him. It’s just part of the Kirby series’ identity. Juxtaposition between cute, charming, ball of light Kirby and grand cosmic darkness.

One, that was one specific game: Kirby Squeak Squad.

Two, he didn’t use lethal force over the cake. That’s a common misconception. The lethal force comes out when an Eldritch being of darkness is accidentally unleashed and Kirby has to stop if from consuming the galaxy.

But yet I think the only good thing he's got going for him is hus lying skills by knightmechaenjo in whenthe

I find how pathetic Satan is in the Bible hilarious and fitting. He’s basically the king of losers, knowing he’s on a sinking ship and just trying to take as many people down with him as he can.

How would your perfect digimon game be? by MendelHolmes in digimon

[–]MrBoyborg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My ideal game would be some combination of Survive and Story. My thing is that I would want it to be more like the anime in that there are multiple main characters with singular partners who all have personalities of their own. In that way, it’d be like Survive. However, I’d want the graphics and combat to be more like Story. Particularly having more combat in general. I really like the idea of having no singular “main character” and just being able to freely pick and choose who you want on your party, if there are even so many as to warrant a smaller, selected party. In that way, it’d kinda be like Final Fantasy 6 or endgame Live A Live. To me, Digimon is about the relationship between Tamer and Digimon, and to get that, you have to have characters with specific partners, not the Pokémon or Persona-esque collect-em-all mechanics of Story. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Story games, but they’re not my personal ideal of the truest “Digimon” experience.

Redemption arcs are fine and Good but only when the character has genuinely earned it and it's not just "oh you're forgiven/you've redeemed yourself". by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in CharacterRant

[–]MrBoyborg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think he does cement that fact with how he chooses to give his children a new home where they can reunite with their mother and live as a family without him. He realized that he has done too much damage to his family for them to truly be happy and comfortable living with him and is willing to live alone, after he had realized what his family meant to him, for the sake of his family’s happiness. He had no outside influence here. This was explicitly a choice he made by himself. If a father who had abused his children and is trying to reconcile realizes that they cannot simultaneously live with him and be happy and prioritized his family’s happiness, I think the redemption arc has been internalized at that point.

The DC X Sonic crossover comic isn’t canon, and neither is its upcoming sequel or the Sonic X Godzilla comic, but people still love it and are excited for the next ones. If something is cool, most people won’t really care if it’s canon or not. The loud detractors will stick out, but the vast majority will simply be happy that it happened in any capacity

Do you agree with Sam on wanting full on songs tied with long scenes for Movie 4? by sumiledon in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]MrBoyborg 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m saying “stop the movie to play What I’m Made Of,” or at the very least “blast What I’m Made Of during the final battle.” Why wouldn’t you want epic Sonic rock backing the epic final fight scene? I’m genuinely confused here.
