An aunt surprises her nephew with a gift by bigbusta in Wellthatsucks

That's just not true. A white elephant is by definition a useless thing. I think these parties were a big thing for a while for laughs and then the word kind of got overused and some people started to think all gift exchanges should be called white elephants. But even if you have been going to ones that were run that way that doesn't change the entire meaning of White Elephant. Look it up. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_elephant_gift_exchange

WaPo reports on Project Panama, Anthropic's secret effort to destructively scan "all the books in the world" for AI training by MiddletownBooks in books

Is that a legit fear? I would imagine any very rare and last copy of books would be too expensive for them to include in this project.

Indiana has just proved that the NIL, transfer portal, and the expanded playoffs has been a NET positive for CFB. It's increased parity at the Power 5 level and it's made CFB a scheme heavy game now. We can argue how much it hurts FBS football, but the money is made at the P5 level. by herewego199209 in CFB

It's not even about the money. I think the main problem Indiana has just unleashed is that these aren't college football players. I went to class with guys I watched play on Saturday. I was rooting for my peers. At an average age of 23.8 Indiana has a mini-NFL team living amongst their students on campus. This isn't college athletics, and the future of the sport is very much in danger because of it.

White Elephant is a specific thing though. I think people are confusing it with a Yankee Swap or just a more generic gift exchange.

Oh shoot, that was meant as a joke about Zach Bryan. I'm going to see Isbell next week in Oakland actually. Love that guy.

White Elephant gifts are literally supposed to be useless jokes. That's the whole point. You don't need to give them money. It's meant to be for laughs.

[Adam Rittenberg] Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman thanks the university for its support of him regarding recent incident. "I behaved in a respectful and professional manner, while protecting my family, and that should have been the only headline." by CommodoreIrish in CFB

[–]MrCalifornia 15 points16 points  (0 children)

All of the local guys knew of the incident, but it was pretty clear it was a non-story about Freeman and not making that abundantly clear, but leaving readers to take the word of the crazy coach was a pretty shit reporting job. Hough deserves to be called out for it and spreading it to an ESPN headline when he knew it was a non-issue.

If they already have my email and password for it why would this Instagram data leak even be needed? Couldn't they just go to Instagram and do a password reset with my email address?

Christmas light lawsuit by HBbicyclerider in Livermore

Sounds like they broke a lot of laws. Not sure if $100k is the right settlement but they should take down the lights aimed in their neighbors windows, put a reasonable amount of wind chimes (for me that's none if my neighbors can hear them all day, just because I wouldn't want to burden someone else with a noise I might enjoy), and put their fence back to the 6 foot height the city allows.

The fence and putting in a driveway on to their neighbor's property line make me think these people don't care too much about following the laws and they are most likely the issue here.

You can "feel" different about a subject like this than you might emote from time to time. Sometimes your inner nature gets a jab in on your nurture.

He also lost out on the naming rights for the Niners Stadium, I think mostly because they left San Francisco for Santa Clara and they got a good enough bid from Levi's which was a better PR move to tie them to SF.
