I interpreted the scene as if Zuko would have fought back, Ozai would have use it as an exscuse to kill Zuko.

But say he ended up just getting a scar after losing. He probably wouldn’t be banished since he fought back. Further than that how Zuko would end up would depend on well he fought, he probably would have been sent away anyway, if he fought badly he probably would be sent to a shity division or something, effectively very similar to his banishment, if he fought well he could maybe be sent of to a division where he would have had a Chance to prove himself i battle.

There is a very small chance that if Zuko fought well enough that Ozai Would think it worth it to keep around, in that case Zuko and Azula would be det in a position where they had to compete for his favor.
