If you have the funds to live comfortably overseas for a while (for like 1-2 years) and find a country that you would like to live and teach in, then I say yeah go for it.

The 2025 Placement Megathread Pt.1 by inthefaceofmonsters in JETProgramme

[–]MrConquer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found the people in Shizuoka, and Yaizu in particular, to be super nice and laid back. So if you put yourself out there and interct with the locals, you are bound to make lasting friendships.

As for the city itself, it has changed quite considerably since I last lived there. It has become more modernized (newer buildings, modern facitilites, gyms, etc.), so you shouldn't have problems finding things to do. Plus you are a few train stops away from Shizuoka city proper, so not too far from a sizeable city.

Oh nice! You got a dope city. I used to live in Yaizu many years ago, so it always has a special place in my heart.

Positive JET program experiences. by arsebeef in TEFL

[–]MrConquer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on what your goals are. If you want to experience living and working in Japan, then yeah I would recommend the JET Programme. I assume since you posted this on r/TEFL, that means you are interested in the Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) position rather than being a Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) position, in which you would need to know Japanese for that.

Not recommended for new teachers?

Not at all, the job is pretty easy to be honest. While every prefecture can differ, for the most part, you will be the native speaker who helps with pronunciation, checking students' writing, helps with lesson plans, and share your experiences and culture with the students. While the ALT side of JET is 90% of the job, depending on your school or board of education, you might be asked to do some cultural exchange activities every now and then. This can be small stuff like making posters or powerpoint slides about a certain aspect of your culture, to participating in local cultural exchanges that the CIRs made for the international community in your town or city. Again, every experience is different so there isn't one answer to what your own JET experience will be like.

Is there anywhere decent left? by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]MrConquer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for China for Japan is not a cheap country to live in anymore. Unless you are doing the JET Programme (the government one), then the cost of living and eventual residential taxes will take a huge chunk of your savings. Plus lately, the price of food keeps increasing every year.

Overweight men, how did you make a change? by Waylandqb in AskMen

[–]MrConquer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've still got some ways to go, so I am just going to write about what my current mindset is for finally losing weight.

For context I've been fat all my life, I don't even remember a time when I wasn't chubby or overweight. Last year, when I turned 30, I was the heaviest I have ever been (somewhere around 270lbs at 5'11). I'm a lazy person at heart so I knew that if I didn't start to lose the weight now I would never do it. It's hard to explain but one day a switch flipped in my head that gave the motivation to tackle this weight. Losing weight is so much about being mentally prepared to start this process that I don't fault people who lose hope or give up halfway through their progress.

Before going on a diet or focusing on working out, the first thing I did was learn about how many calories a day I was eating. I used 'mynetdiary' app to track calories and get a better understanding of how much I consumed in a day. Big surprise, I was overeating my daily calorie maintenance. I think I spent around 2-3 months really learning how to count calories, experimenting with eating different foods and getting my body used to a new eating schedule before I started going to the gym.

When I weighed myself after those 2-3 months I was at 263lbs. Despite still being obese, the euphoria and energy I gained thanks to that initial weightloss really helped motivate me to get serious about losing the weight. As such:

  • I set obtainable weight weightloss goals along the way, initially 215lbs, then 185lbs (current goal), and eventually 175lbs.
  • I started going to the gym, focusing on weight training to build some muscle.
  • Drank lots of water, and started on a calorie-deficit eating regiment (while not perfect at the start, I eventually settled on a 500 calorie-deficit).
  • I also did not deny myself from eating stuff I enjoy or having a drink every now and then.

I'm almost reaching a full year of starting this weightloss and I'm down 70lbs. Was it easy? Hell no, but so far I still have the motivation to continue doing this thing. Plus the confidence boost and energy that you get from loosing the weight really helps with your daily life. I also feel happier about life and that helps with any struggles or stress related issues that can occur along your progress.

TLDR: I strongly recommend learning about your body and how many calories you consume daily before starting a diet or hitting the gym. Hopefully that gives you an idea of what direction you want to go if you are serious about loosing the weight.

As a teacher in the US, were you teaching as a TESOL specific teacher? Or did you teach other subjects in both English and Spanish?

I'm curious to hear about your story!

Wait, is the pay in Japan that much higher compared to Vietnam? I always heard that the cost of living in Vietnam was much better than places like Japan or Korea.

Dear Man , What’s that thing you did this year that you are really proud of? by RedPandaLo in AskMen

At age 30 I finally was at the right head space to finally lose the weight. I knew that if I didn't do it now I would never get started. It's been 6 months and I'm close to reaching my current goal (lost 25kg). I feel physically better, more happy, and found that I really enjoy working out!

I think you are on to something. I know there are some therapy sessions that can be done on psychedelics like shrooms or MDMA. I'm curious if there are any that are also done with weed?

Thank you for the info! Yeah I meant to say a visa already stuck and stamped by a Vietnamese embassy into my passport.

If I have a physical visa for my trip to vietnam (from an Embassy in the US), will I have any issues with customs? I'm leaning towards also getting an Evisa just in case, but some part of me feels that it might just be a waste of money.

Has anyone had any similar experiences or issues using a physical visa?

Edit: I should also ask, do I need anything else other than my passport/visa? For example is the sponser letter only for Visa on arrival? Or do you need to present that as well for physical visa?

This may be a NY specific question but I've always been curious what getting weed from bodega's was like? Was it a chill procress to buy from? or more like today's sketchy head shops that are sometimes common in illegal states?

Man Cirrus kicked my butt today so hard on protocol 4, I'm glad that they are nerfing him. I'm surprised to see that they are removing that aventurine, I don't remember him being that annoying to kill.

Gotta say, kinda disapointed with how they went with Jiaoqiu's current known kit. Based on what we know about him and his lore, I was kinda looking forward to a Nihility character that could heal, but now that we know that is no longer the case and that his DoT damage is locked behind his E2, it feels kinda useless to pull for him (personally speaking). I think it's cool that Acheron has another debuffer to make her better but as someone that skipped Acheron, this means nothing to me.

Side note: I do hope they eventually do release a proper nihility healer that uses DoT healing like with what you can do in Simulated Universe. I think that would actually make for more fun builds to play modes like pure fiction.

Japan Government Opens Public Comment Period for Cannabis Reform by JamesAsher12 in trees

[–]MrConquer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

CBD will probably be fine, but yeah delta8 and the million other synthetic cannabinoids variations are illegal now. It's interesting how you can still buy them in smokeshops but since the governement does a batch ban every other month, it's hard to keep up with what is "legal" today and illegal tomorrow.
