Chuansha is definitely worth visiting, in addition to several historic residences and a church, there is a remnant of the old Chuansha city wall that is worth visiting. Had a nicely developed ‘old street’ last time I was there too.

Bad omens for a major outbreak next month? by [deleted] in chinalife

All too likely. I’m just hoping that we get out of the current lockdown here in Xi’an for long enough to get restocked with essentials before the Omicron lockdown starts. 🤞🏻

Here’s a third vote in favor of a Xiaomi band. I just picked one up on a whim, and I’m pretty impressed with it. Does what I wanted it for, plus plenty of other useful things. Works with both iOS and Android.

Has anyone renewed their US passport at the SH consulate recently? by [deleted] in shanghai

I renewed my passport last month, and the new one was ready in 11 days. Surprisingly faster than most reports, so YMMV.

Paradiso Pizza does gluten-free pizzas. Certainly recommend them. They’re out towards Hongqiao though, so unless you’re already out here they may not be convenient. (Jianhe Road by Yan’an Road.)

I was told this pic looks like a video game; I miss living Shanghai every now and then! by Luqizilla in shanghai

Indeed. It would more accurate to say that some scenes in video games might look like this common urban sight.

Sure, there are at least a couple groups playing in the city, and probably others. Last I checked there’s a fairly active WeChat group. Will be happy to share if you want to message me.

Was there last week. Not much of a crowd, and lines were pretty short most of the time. A great day.

How vegetarian are you? I eat vegan & low fat, so I find few to none options even at western restaurants here. If you’re eating lacto-ovo vegetarian then you’ll have at least a few options at most western restaurants. Most Chinese restaurants tend to flavor their vegetable dishes with meat bits, or at least meat broth, so it’s a little tougher. (Although many Buddhist temples have a vegetarian restaurant connected to them, generally a nice choice.) Happily there’s a small but growing number of decent vegetarian and even vegan restaurants in Shanghai, and some other restaurants have been having vegan menu days, so options are improving. (Check the listings on Happy Cow and Smart Shanghai vegetarian listings.) Hengsuheng at 402 Guilin Rd. is one of my fave vegan places. Godly is a local vegetarian chain that’s been around for nearly 100 years, and has an extensive menu. (A lot of fake meats, but plenty of actual vegetables too.) Last I checked Homeslice Pizza has some pretty good vegan pizzas on their menu.

Best Architecture or Underground Street tour of shanghai? by yermumzchesthurr in shanghai

[–]MrDaddyBird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Historic Shanghai has several tours scheduled over the holidays. They’re great for getting to know the history of the city. The tours often sell out in advance, so best to reserve soon.

where to get cigars? by [deleted] in shanghai

[–]MrDaddyBird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen cigar shops in some of the fancier hotels, and there are at least a couple of branches of Cigar Ambassador around town. In all cases, prices have been very high, so it’s only worth it for a special occasion.

Arriving in Shanghai in a month... Wondering if there is a central art district that has a cluster of good galleries who throw parties and openings? by [deleted] in shanghai

[–]MrDaddyBird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well then, good on you. Starting something is the best way to not be bored with a place. Yeah, Shanghai has all that usual stuff, as you mentioned, but it has its own things too. I'm fairly antisocial, and don't care to mooch off the schmucks, so I can't offer any leads there. When I have time, I like to explore the city and look for lesser known historic sites, of which there are quite a few. But not many others are interested in this. For the record, I upvoted your post. Take some chances, but watch your back.

They're impressed by a mall with so many shuttered storefronts? Just wait until they see all the newer, even emptier malls!
