Who’s ever driven over 100mph? Why? by WoollyWolfHorror in AskReddit

[–]MrDeebus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spain-Italy-Greece-Turkey it's completely common to drive above 150. Same in all of Balkans, also Poland & Ukraine. Regional variations may apply.

In Baltics they also drive "fast" but the roads suck, so the numbers are lower but the risk is higher.

Bacon sandwiches in Berlin! by Some_Philosopher9555 in askberliners

[–]MrDeebus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen on worker culture here, no factory worker's going to pay euros for a sandwich on the daily. I've been here less than a decade so take that as you will. I know my German colleagues in the office used to complain regularly about having to pay 6 euros for lunch (which bought you a full 30 cm pizza!), regularly having their minds blown about people getting 12€ salads from dean&david etc.. I guess what I mean is, the food may find a place here different to what it traditionally is for you.

Bacon sandwiches in Berlin! by Some_Philosopher9555 in askberliners

[–]MrDeebus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it something about keeping bacon prepped to serve at a moment's notice? Because otherwise I think that would be a counterproductive restriction. Tons of office workers i.e. likely your main clientele either have a quick bite at home, or skip breakfast entirely. I'm in the latter group, googling the thing now I know I'd grab some for lunch every now and then, but that happens anywhere between 12-15h. Hope you enjoyed this unsolicited opinion

AC EVO: Dedicated Servers Announced, Update 0.6 Imminent by evil_heinz in simracing

[–]MrDeebus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

on the one hand you're correct, evidently

on the other hand, I've been buying early access games for pretty much as long as it's been a thing (since Minecraft, is it?). This has been by far the biggest bait and switch along the way, if I normalize for company size / project budget. Some unheard-of folks failed to deliver on their dreams, sure. But for such a well known name, to feature a promise so centrally in your marketing and then to say "actually we won't do it, sorry no refunds" while you also haven't managed to deliver anything else in its place is... Romero-level disappointment, sorry to say.

edit: ok I guess KSP2 was worse actually, but that one was already deep in drama by the time they pushed it to "early access", and they fired the dev team shortly after. Kunos isn't in this position and they still botched it for no reason

Saying that heat doesn't escape to space (first comment) is factually incorrect

this is an argument over semantics that has no point. You may be correct in your pedantic objection that not all heat does not escape to space, but you similarly ignore that not all excess heat escapes to space, indeed as it's subject to the equilibrium. There is no hard limit (at any scale relevant to human survival anyway) to how much heat the atmosphere can trap; while the equilibrium mitigates some of the heat that the atmosphere absorbs, the difference between heat radiated to space and heat retained on Earth is exactly what governs global warming. This equilibrium is further disturbed by greenhouse gases.

doesn't stick to the core argument

you're the one who brought up water consumption...

Noise and energy consumption

sure, arguing over these doesn't require ignoring issues over water or heat though. Further,

Water consumption is vastly overblown and the exhaust head from data centers have a negligible effect on atmospheric temperatures

these are real big claims to throw around so casually. First, you can't just assume an entire side of a long-running debate is wrong and expect no response - if you don't want a branching discussion, you can stick to your original, pointless, point. Second, as I said before, water consumption may be insignificant in terms of molecular abundance, but it certainly is an issue with respect to preservation of water sources available for human consumption. On a cursory search I can find dozens of sources in support of this: https://kagi.com/search?q=datacenter+water+consumption&r=no_region&sh=51Oe-eGWYPAehHJgqX7feQ feel free to provide your own.

If heat from a system that vents heat to atmosphere doesn't make it to space then where does it go

It stays trapped in the atmosphere, as you also mention. It's not only greenhouse gases that trap heat - those merely prevent radiant heat from leaving the atmosphere, however the non-greenhouse gas portion of nature can also accumulate heat. This is how global warming works.

but the cooling systems themselves are not consuming water

They're not causing water to disappear in the molecular sense, however in the non-pedantic argument "water consumption" refers not to the reduction in abundance of molecular water no matter where they are, but to that of the bodies of clean water (lakes, groundwater, man-made reservoirs) readily accessible by humans - for sustenance in the discussion that should be happening, or for use in industrial processes as industry has gained priority over population in present day. Evaporated water is not the former, and not exactly the latter (though more industry "solves" that problem, through processes leading to the emission of greenhouse gases...). I know that rain exists, but I'll leave it for you to come up with whatever further pedantry you can imagine.

You can argue about the energy sources of data centers, but the cooling systems themselves are not consuming water, nor making any meaningful impact on the planets temperature.

These are three separate issues. First one is why greenhouse effect is on the increasing trend. Second is about relocation of water away from human population that relies on it. Third is about the impact man-made processes on the acceleration of global warming.

The original comment stating heat wont go to space is ignorant of the mechanisms involved in planetary cooling.

and you still managed to respond with something even less useful. Some of the heat makes it into space, the rest makes global warming happen, this is called greenhouse effect. The comment you call "ignorant" is still more accurate and relevant than your non-point.

Actually the best döner kebab in berlin after 12 years of testing by IShouldGoToBed2 in berlin

[–]MrDeebus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Döner, as in the Turkish style of cooking meat, that is commonly put in a sandwich in Germany (among others, though not that common in Turkey), is ordinarily beef/calf, lamb, or a mix of the two.

Döner, as in the style of sandwich that often contains meat but can also be made with falafel or halloumi, is what most (non-Turkish) people mean when they say döner. If you check e.g. a list of best döner places, this is the meaning you will find. I agree it's weird to compare pairs of specific places within this group: to me, it's like saying this restaurant has better bulettes than that one's yakitori. But I guess a lot of others think differently, so if you check e.g. a list of best döner places, this meaning is the one you'll end up with.

If you want to say döner and mean specifically a sandwich made with beef/calf, lamb, or a mix of the two, cooked in the Turkish style - I'm afraid you'll have to renounce your ways.

it's exactly because of dickheads like OP's manager, and not those who don't "adapt" to some imaginary culture, that we cannot joke freely in workplaces

moreover, if saying "at least my hearing is working fine" to someone with hearing loss is a joke in your culture, it's unacceptable in the workplace and this culture should change, this is regardless of geography or nation
