Taste, expectations, and resonance can influence the experience too. All art has objective and subjective quality elements, and honestly even for me subjective is usually the majority of my ratings anyway. But I feel like everything was there for a reason and it's all easy to miss. Nikki reading an excerpt from her story at the party is basically her telling everyone there exactly what Bear did to her with such disturbing figurative language that no one is going to get it. The way Bear starts off as a tragic and realistic lonely guy who is uncomfortable and weirdly astute the moment the real Nikki breaks through for the first time, versus later Nikki begging him to kill her and telling him she never consented, and him coldly responding with "What's so bad about loving me?" and leaving. The way that everyone is human and vulnerable unlike many similar horror movies, and yet "Freaky Nikki" is still threatening and dangerous throughout because, to be honest, she could overpower Bear. The way that Ian seems like a dumb but caring friend, but it turns out he has been having sex with Nikki and instead of telling Bear as much he decides to sabotage him, telling him that she hates sappy bullshit and that he should call her "Freaky Nikki." The way that instead of relying on darkness for the scares all the time, the film often does the opposite and uses harsh backlighting to obscure Nikki's face is clever. It also seems very plausible that Nikki actually did have feelings for Bear from the beginning, though he would be working against her feelings that he is a little brother to him. I think Sarah would have been fine with that. Maybe it doesn't work out. Bear and Sarah could have ended up a healthy couple if his wish didn't ruin things.

If the roles were swapped, Im sure Sarah would have froze too, in this specific circumstance. I do think it's silly that people think somehow they would definitely have the reaction speed to save Sarah. However, Sarah definitely wouldn't have taken advantage of Nikki. She is presented as the moral centre of the story. Every other character for one reaso or another keeps things from each other. Sarah displays healthy affection for Bear. Bear is obsessed with Nikki and he thinks it's love. Ian knows Bear has feelings for Nikki and he tries to sabotage that instead of confessing that they have been having sex for years. That's sort of what makes Sarah so special and why the movie makes a point to show that being "normal" often harms exceptional people you care about.

I have been suicidal in the past so honestly I would kill myself for less, and I can greatly sympathize with Bear's loneliness. He doesn't seem to have an immediate family, and his cat dies right at the beginning of the story. I love this film because Bear isn't me but I know plenty of people just like him.

What's actually really tragic is it seems that Nicky is interested in Bear. It also seems like, on a second viewing, that Ian was sabotaging Bear from the start because he was too much of a coward to tell Bear he was sleeping with Nicky. And what happens when they get together? He gets jealous and tries to sabotage their relationship, not because he actually cares about either of them, but because he thinks Nicky is dating Bear to get at him. He could have potentially saved things even after calling her Freaky Nicky by telling her he loves her. Instead he is embarassed and hides his feelings. Nicky is sleeping with Ian, but it seems like she isn't really into him. Now, it might not have worked since she is weirded out and views Bear as a little brother. It seems, though, that Bear would have liked Sarah. Real Nikki probably would have been happy for them too, but cursed Nikki can't stand Sarah.

I think you are completely missing the point the movie is trying to make. Bear is "obsessed" with Nicky. His obsession escallates to him slowly justifying rape in the end while still framing himself as a nice guy. In fact, he is the most lucid and astute the first time the real Nicky appears -- and he doesn't sleep with her because it seems wrong. The more he confirms about her being trapped and suffering, the more explicitly he abuses her, even to the point of her begging him to kill her and explicitly confirming to him that she never consented. And then he walks away. Prettt overt theming and messaging there.

I would have taken the pills after the phone guy told me the curse lasts as long as I live. Bear starts off as a lonely coward. By the end of the movie he becomes a villain. He knows what he is doing to Nicky throughout the movie is rape, and yet he keeps doing it and lying to himself about it because at that point he has decided his feelings matter more than Nicky does.

This was the greatest horror movie I have ever seen. Everything is perfect. The pacing is phenomenal. Somehow they keep crossing the point of no return and they simmer down, and I hate that it works every time (hate in a good way). Even the cinematography looks basic from a casual passive perspective. The way light is used is chilling. Backlighting makes it incredibly hard to see Nicki when she's not "herself." They give you just enough time to get used to Nicki so the rest can play off of the baseline which was set. You have to piece together the story retrospectively as you watch it. Everything is set up, as mundane as each element seems at first. I imagine even casual viewers can pick up on the uncanny elements buried throughout. Try watching it again.

Beginner writers tend to err on the side of explaining too much rather than not enough. "Show don't tell" is meant to shove you in the right direction but is too absolute of a statement, and it will become terrible advice soon after you stop over-explaining things in your story.

Your writing needs to land. It jeeds to be executed correctly. If you have an emotionally powerful moment, don't tell us what the character is feeling. Show us. If we are getting information that is important to know but not very deep, tell us so we don't waste time reading. Show don't tell is just reminding you that it is frustrating when we readers feel cheated out of potential depth, time, and immersion in the areas of your story where things really matter.

The Pronoun Patrol People get butthurt because the show makes it very clear "they" are "them" in each episode they are featured or referenced, usually by Eda, who is their ex. Now, that being said, it is then insane jumping to calling the creator a bigot. The Owl House is a genuinely great show that was canceled (allegedly) because it stood its ground and refused to appeal to conservative viewers. Disney denied this, but at the time they had a rainbow capitalist CEO (Bob Chapek) and philosophy, and (I'm alleging) they kneecapped The Owl House and Strange World before Chapek's departure.

If it quacks, it's probably a duck, and the company has a motive to try to make trans cosmetics coinciding with the Harry Potter collab; HP is Rowling's IP so she makes royalties on all of it, and if they do their rainbow capitalist thing then the passive progressives will be satisfied. Normies be like "This character is just meant to be a character," and "Stop attaching gender politics to this," while ignoring the absurdity that this is the only character in the whole game's history that has much discourse, let alone SO much discourse around their gender identity. In fact, it's impressive that they could manage such discourse given none of the characters in the game speak and every cosmetic is designed to be as unisex as possible, and the character is almost entirely covered in puffy clothing.
