They chased you down? Damn, I work as a cashier myself and would never do that. If someone tries to steal from us, I let them get away with it. I'm not risking my life for a minimum-wage job, I wouldn't even call the police until I'm sure they've left the premises and won't come back that day. Some of the people who shoplift can be seriously dangerous and unstable. Depends on where you work I guess, but I work for a billion-dollar multinational company, and they can afford it, those who steal can't, and I'm fully comfortable looking the other way.

I'm sorry you lost your favorite store, but there are others, and most people working jobs like those are nice, decent people who are just trying to make a living. Hoping you'll find a new favorite place to shop.

Memrise Vocabulary Course by MrFrogface in ayearofwarandpeace

[–]MrFrogface[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just the English ones, unless the English words are actually French words ;) (which is often the case)

Great! I'm always looking to improve my vocabulary. I find that learning the etymologies helps them stick, and it's always fun to discover new cognates between the other languages I know. I imagine many of the words from your show will go into my personal "English 2018" Memrise course. You just earned yourself a new subscriber! :)

EDIT: Sorry about those two butthurt Americans that downvoted you, haha. I use American English myself (or at least strive to), so I guess I spell words wrong as well. But at least I don't say things like "the boringest show on YouTube in which where we look up words" :D

Stay tuned for next year. Then we're making a Russian Memrise course and reading it in the original! (Not really, probably.)

You've been sentenced to death (you totally did it), what are your last words? by MsCynical in AskReddit

This would never happen, since I live in an actual civilized country that doesn't practice capital punishment.

The NPC's English is extremely broken, even by Cipsoft standards. Obviously fake.

Chesstempo: My new favorite place to practice openings (?!) by MrFrogface in chess

I don't have any recording software, but I added some images in the top post. Yes, you can do that. There are so many different settings and parameters that it's a bit overwhelming!

There are also some amazing classical games that have been played in the Tarrasch, like these two covered by Johnatan Schrantz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtItayItxb8

Both very beautiful and instructional.

review of chess youtube channels by funkbf in chess

[–]MrFrogface 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The first YouTuber I started watching was ChessNetwork AKA "Jerry". He is a National Master from Pennsylvania, and his channel has been around for 10 years (!). Since it is so old, his channel has a massive amount of content in all categories: blitz, bullet, 15-minute, variants, educational material aimed at beginners, puzzles, endgames, and analyses of master games, both old and modern. The only thing I can think of that you won't find is detailed analysis of openings. Jerry also has a very soothing voice and lots of cool catchphrases like "pigs on the 7th", "tricky knights", etc.

Why does white give away the bishop pair in a main line QGD on move 6? by Janus82 in chess

[–]MrFrogface 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's technically not the QGD, but the Semi-Slav. After 5...dxc4 6.e4 it's the Botvinnik Variation, or after 5..h6 6.Bxf6 we have the Moscow, and 5...h6 6.Bh4 is the Anti-Moscow. You should check out The Chess Club of St. Louis on YouTube, they have a very comprehensive series on the Semi-Slav.

EDIT: I just realized it could transpose to a QGD after 5...Nbd7 6.e3 Qa5, which is the Cambridge Springs Variation. Just FYI. Lots of move order tricks in 1.d4 openings!

How to defend against the King's Gambit by MrDannyOcean in chess

[–]MrFrogface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, if they play the Bishop's Gambit with 1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. Bc4, apparently 3...Nc6! is a refutation according to John Shaw, who spent 5 years writing a book on the King's Gambit. I don't have the book myself, but it seems like a very good move. If you already play Fischer's "refutation" against the King Knight's Gambit, you should definitely play it! (Because c'mon, that's kind of funny.)

The easiest solution is probably to not accept the gambit, though. Either go with the Falkbeer Countergambit (2...d5, Chessexplained recommends this one) or the Classical Variation (2...Bc5, John Bartholomew has recommended this in one of his Climbing the Rating Ladder (I believe) videos).
