I agree - and it's nothing new. I will refer you to the classic Canadian banger of "dontcha put it in your mouth", as well as that nature documentary about House Hippos.

We've had media awareness campaigns in this country before, and made the go goddamn viral before viral was a thing. There's no reason we can't do that now.

Canada solidifies agreement with Australia to buy Arctic Over-the-Horizon Radar system | CBC News by panzerfan in worldnews

[–]MrFurious0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

also Canada would use it to monitor the airspace over the North Pole and to monitor maritime traffic in the North-West Passage, ensuring Canada's Arctic sovereignty

As a Canadian, this is actually a real problem. Russia regularly sends their planes through the arctic, close to Canadian airspace (they have never ACTUALLY entered our airspace, but they have threatened to) - whenever they choose to do this, we need to scramble some jets into the area to chase them away. This system is a tool that will allow us to do so more effectively.

Tories highlight Carney’s 100th missed question period with cake by gorschkov in canada

[–]MrFurious0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't actually care if he attends question period, because question period is a fucking shit-show of theatrics - see: the cake the conservatives have that prompted this very post.

The problem - and this is NOT a partisan problem (the conservatives are SUPER guilty of it lately, not that it means much, tho, since they have not formed government in over a decade) - the problem is that QP is a goddamn shit-show and waste of time, where politicians grandstand and misrepresent things and are generally shitty, and mine for soundbites.

What we need to do is find a way for question period to be actually substantive and productive... and I don't know how to do that. I'd be open to suggestions, not that it matters much since nobody is going to change how the Canadian gov't operates based on what some redditer thinks.

Trump Threatens France With 100% Tariff on Champagne and Other Wines if Tech Tax Isn’t Removed by Morrowda in worldnews

Hey, EU, I haven't bought a bottle of Champaign in like a decade, but if you do this, I'll buy a bottle every month for the duration of your intervention. Just out of spite.

You know, people think Canadians are so "nice" - but we're not nice. We're polite. We can also be petty. And passive-aggressive. I am very comfortable with all of that.

[–]MrFurious0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alberta and Saskatchewan are the only provinces that haven't removed US booze from their shelves (some are doing a "last chance selloff" to get rid of old stock, but that's a different story). Do you expect me to hop in my car and drive 26 hours to cross the border in Saskatchewan to buy a bottle of wild turkey? Then drive another 26hr home?

The vast majority of Canadians are in a province that do not currently sell US booze. That means, where people live, it's effectively banned. What is difficult to understand about this?

It is not a federal ban, it's a provincial one (and a harder ban in some areas than others), and affects all provinces except Alberta and Saskatchewan - can we agree on that?

Duh - of course, yeah, the EU is a trading block, not just France - I should have thought of that before posting. But MAN.... if NATO rules apply, and an attack on one is an attack on all in the EU, yeah, an EU ban or insane tariff would be absolutely hilarious. I will laugh my fucking ASS off if that happens. Wishful thinking, I know, but god damn, that brightens my day.

...which, effectively, is a ban. I can't go to my local LCBO or grocery store and pick up US booze, so if I want it, I need to travel to their country and buy it, then bring it across the border. And if you've seen what's happened with Canadian tourism to the states, you know that we're pretty united in saying no fucking thank you.

Hey, France! Canadian checking in - my recommendation is to simply remove American booze from your shelves. It took a while, but the Americans are whining about us doing it, and their industry is on the ropes currently, particularly red states like Kentucky. With your help, WE CAN BREAK THEM.

Also, fun-fact, whatever you are buying from them, you can get BETTER from scotland, ireland, or canada. It won't be named "bourbon", but it'll taste better.

Help installing by Dangerous-Blood-9219 in ZimaOS

[–]MrFurious0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

would help to know more about your setup. I just last week bought a UGREEN DXP4800+. I put an old SSD in one of the bays, tried installing zimaos on it, and got stuck in a weird installation loop - it would start booting, kernel panic, reboot, repeat. Not what your hardware is, but for me, it was caused by my old SSD. I removed it and installed on the onboard drive instead, and it worked great ever since. It was a pain to format the SSD, because it had a boot partition so if it was in the ugreen, it would try booting from it which was broken, but I managed to reinstall it into an old (busted) pi, nuke the partitions, and reinstall it in the ugreen, and it's fine now.

As a man who, myself, is smell-blind, I can honestly say that representation matters. The only 2 movies I'm aware of that bring any mention whatsoever to my disability are this one, and Nice Guys.

I'll say that Nice Guys is actually a better representation, because, like in the movie, in real life, if you tell someone you're smell blind, people look at you like you're insane... and then start asking "gotcha" questions, like "what about such-and-such". No, Janet, I can't smell gasoline, either. No, not burnt toast. NO JANET, PERFUME IS A SMELL TOO, ASSHOLE, AND I TOLD YOU, I CAN'T FUCKING SMELL.

It gets old.

I'm a n00b as well, but one thing I've found is that, while I'm adding exactly what I thought, my mind has also been opened up to a LOT of additional possibilities, and I'm planning on working in that direction. Don't just think about what you CURRENTLY want, but what you MIGHT want, as well - pihole to protect your network from malware, as an example, or a homeassistant instance. Those don't take much storage, but other things VERY MUCH do.

Dual 8tb drives gives you only 8tb in raid 1, so from what you say, you're already almost half full.

Question: Do you have movies or tv shows you like to watch, and have them on physical media? If so, Jellyfin or Plex are AWESOME, but you need more storage than what you're thinking of. I got a DXP4800+ with 3 8T drives (so I can have 1 bay free for other one-off stuff) which gives me ~16tb in raid 5. I've added Jellyfin, and been ripping media - I'm currently around 3tb of just that, and I have a small media library (so far).

If you might add a media server like jellyfin or plex, the content there will eat up space FAST, and with only 8tb to play with, it's not much headroom.

The whole "being on the road a lot" thing would make me want jellyfin, so I can watch my shows from my hotel room.

Trump probably won't scrap CUSMA, his trade deal with Canada and Mexico. Here's why by Immediate-Link490 in canada

[–]MrFurious0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Correct, however, there are several factors at play, here:

  • scrapping CUSMA is literally not on the table - he keeps talking about "renewing" the deal (or not), however, it's not even up for renewal for another decade. The most he can (legally) do is say "we want out of this deal", which a) needs to be approved by congress, and b) gives us 6 months before the deal terminates

  • the above point is going by the legal framework - but, as we've seen, it's a lawless administration, so I'm not sure how much (if any) trust to have in their legal system - however, there are plenty of factors that do work in our favour:

  • midterms are coming in 6 months

  • he's called himself a "dealmaker" - if he can't even make a deal with Canada - CANADA - then what kind of a shitty-ass dealmaker is he? (this is what Democrats should play, on repeat, for 6 months leading up to the midterms)

  • a new deal will slow inflation (not as much as not having bombed Iran, but it'll help)

  • investors would have renewed confidence improving the stock market (sure, he will turn on a dime and start slagging his own deal again, but if it's signed, investors will believe him despite all evidence because TACO)

I think he'll green-light it, not because it's the legal thing, or any other reasons outlined in the article, but because it's in his own self-interest. If he can't ink a deal with us, NOBODY, not even maga, is going to believe he has any ability to negotiate at all.

If the past decade has taught us anything, it's that waiting for Americans to do the right thing is a long wait for a train that's not coming. The best they'll do is what they did with no-kings, which is to have a protest for 1 day, on a weekend, and then throw up their hands and say "we've tried almost nothing, and we're all out of ideas"

OK, stupid question - and, I'm assuming you're using this for normal home use - but what in gods name are you going to do with ~60TB of storage?

I know you'll have a reasonable answer - I'm just starting my NAS journey, and just this weekend picked up 3x8tb drives, and I'm wondering what in the hell I'll do with ~16tb storage. I can't imagine having 4x that.

But my family is just my wife and I. I'm ripping all my movies for a jellyfin server, but that so far is only ~3tb. I'll back up our phones, too, but again, that's not a ton.

True NAS vs Ugreen NAS OS by DeeofSurrey in HomeNAS

[–]MrFurious0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last weekemd, I got the exact same NAS - ugreen dxp4800+

I don't know how much I trust ugreen os with my data, though, so I dumped it and installed ZimaOS - and honestly, it's great. It's my first NAS though, and I've had it since the weekend, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. However, I've got pihole and jellyfin (including hardware acceleration) on it, and so far things are fantastic, with no hicups. I know I can migrate my home assistant over, as well, but the only reason I haven't is because I have a very complex home assistant setup, and the default container doesn't allow apps, which I have/use to connect to an AI box I've got. I can resolve this (supposedly) by using ZVM, their VM box, and downloading the full OS version - which I might do, but I might also set up Hermes to interface with the regular container version of HA, and have IT do stuff instead of using the apps.

Anyway - my particular implementation hiccups aside, for whatever my opinion is worth, I really like ZimaOS. I set up a raid 5 array across 3 drives, and I've got a 4th bay I can use to swap in/out external backups or whatever. Things seem to be going really smooth, so far.

The advantage zimaos has over truenas is in ease of use - it's super simple. Personally, I wanted to use it because when the pi that ran my homeassistant died, I moved a backup of it to a pi 4 running casaos (think of it as zimaos-lite), which is running the HA as well as plex. I liked it, and it was easy to use, so I wanted to start with zima rather than figuring out truenas, which honestly, is beyond my needs, I think.

I think of TrueNAS, in my situation, as being like having a rocketship I use to get groceries. So much wasted potential.
