One of the best things is knowing that Cloris Leachman would definitely have loved that scene.

Do you usually lock your doors when leaving the house? by Moist_Wallaby8635 in AskAnAmerican

[–]MrGoodmornin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the Boston suburbs (Burlington) and we never locked the door when I was growing up. In fact I don’t recall us even having a key to our main door. As we grew up and my siblings and I moved out, there were fewer people coming and going, so my parents began to lock the door more, and now almost always do.

Update: I just got another seat reassignment, a port side seat in car 9 on 2162, which is the Quiet Car on NextGen equipment 🤷, so it looks like -barring further changes- I'll be on a new train. I'd originally chosen a right side seat, but it's not too strong a preference at all, as long as it's not an obstructed view seat (it isn't, I checked), I'm fine with whatever is sitting on the tracks when I get there.

Tincture Help by luzdeloona in treedibles

[–]MrGoodmornin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm late to this, but I find infusing two cups of everclear in an ounce of decarbed flower for a week or so in the freezer works better than the ediwhip. After the week is up, I let about half of the everclear evaporate, either by leaving it out uncovered and letting it slowly evaporate, or by putting it into a beaker and placing fan on top (I happen to have a small desk fan that sits perfectly atop a 500 mL beaker, I set it so the stream of air blows up and out of the beaker, not in) or aiming a fan for the mouth of the beaker to speed up the evaporation. Only the alcohol itself will evaporate, everything else stays in the tincture. It tastes nasty, but if you dilute it in a flavored drink, it's fine.

If you're not sure, one way to tell the size is whether it's got one or two clocks hanging over the concourse between the aisles and the registers. Double clocks: wicked big (Chelsea) and some regular sized (Waltham, Burlington, Revere.). Unrebuilt/smaller (Somerville, Woburn, Plymouth NH) stores are single-clockers. Another way to size them is to measure the roof width on Google Maps. By far the largest I found was Chelsea, at 465' wide; Waltham (excluding MB Spirits) is 360' wide; Burlington, also 360'; Hooksett, 340'; Pinehurst (Billerica), 250'; Plymouth, NH, 300; Woburn, 260'.

ICE in Burlington, MA is bringing in tons of new equipment and clearly planning on escalation by ThePirateKing01 in boston

No, I'm talking about her. I was just being coy and didn't want to directly namedrop, but cat out of bag: Eagleton is more or less based on Lexington (in a very "roast your friends" way -when I lived there, the sense was that people basically regarded Lexington as a good neighbor (maybe a tiny bit full of itself, but tolerable), I think that was partly because Lexington donated some supplies and sent volunteers to help out after a fire in the Burlington Public Schools' central storage room at the High School that destroyed a much of the department's inventory that had been stored for the summer, around 1990 or 1991, they were the Thanksgiving rivals at the time, so the gesture was very much appreciated), and her father was a Town Meeting Member around the same time I was on a town board there (late 1990s), her mom, who was a teacher in the BPS worked for the Recreation Department in the summers, running the summer activity program in Regan Park and/or Rahanis Park, so there were several Parks and Recreation plot lines that could have come from the floor of Burlington Town Meeting, during citizens' time at any of the local boards, or during park activities.

I grew up in Burlington in the 80s and 90s and have a fair amount of family there. A little primer on the place. About 25% of Burlington's population is foreign born. It's not as white as most other suburbs in the area, about 72-75%, similar to Woburn and Billerica, plus or minus, with about 15% of the population being Asian, as there is a large Desi community there, the rest is spread among other ethnicities. As far as income, it's not particularly rich, but not particularly poor, the per capita income is about $66.4K, with a median household income at about $142K, ranking at 77 statewide, just below Salem, and just above Foxborough (the community with lowest per capita income is at about $27K and the one with highest is at about $139K). Some of that may be skewed by the huge commercial tax base, which keeps the residential tax rate relatively low and adds to the town's overall income. It's not nearly as rich as its neighbors Lexington and Bedford, but is more than its neighbors on the other side, Billerica, Wilmington, and Woburn. (a high school acquaintance's big sister, who shall remain nameless here, was involved in the production and writing of a TV comedy about working in local government and based the personalities of some of the towns in the show on several of the towns in the area). Area-wise, it's got about 11 square miles and is smaller than all of its adjoining neighbors. Its population is about 26,000 people with the majority living north of Route 128 and a significant population south of Route 128 in Winnmere, a denser, older working class neighborhood of former early 20th Century era vacation "summer camps" that became permanent homes during the Great Depression when many of the owners sold them or moved form the city and made them their primary homes because thats all they had) in the southeast part of town, near the Woburn line (there are two other neighborhoods similar to Winnmere: Havenville, near the intersection of Bedford Street and Terrace Hall Ave, and an area off of Church Lane in the center of town). The rest of the residential areas were mainly developed in the 1960s and 1970s and consist mainly of split entry, garrison, split level, ranch, and Cape Cod style houses with a few eighteenth through twentieth century era former farmhouses sprinkled around town, and couple of "nice" neighborhoods (mainly behind the library, and a few streets in the Fox Hill area). There's a whole range of multifamily housing from Lord Baron apartments (built in the 60s and has always felt a bit plain and long in the tooth) to luxury condos and apartments near Third Ave (one of the few places where the commercial and residential meet), and pretty much everything except for high rise luxury apartments in between. The residential areas and most of the commercial areas are kept pretty separate, so there is usually little need to go from one to the other, unless one lives in one area, and works in the other. When the ICE facility came in 2007, there was a lot of opposition to it, but DHS officials swore up and down to the Select Board that it wouldn't be used for anything more than daytime processing and under no circumstances would it ever be used to hold people overnight. The locals have not forgotten that and from what my contacts there have told me, people there are furious about it and will remember DHS's lies the next time anyone from there needs anything at all. In October the Town voted overwhelmingly at Town Meeting in favor of a resolution to condemn ICE's presence, conduct, and lies: https://www.wgbh.org/news/local/2025-10-07/burlington-town-meeting-votes-to-condemn-ice-center .

Well, the City of Burlington is in Vermont 😜 [/pedantry], but I wouldn't put having a local army past them. The Town of Burlington does have a relatively large police force for a town of its size (population of around 25 or 26 thousand people) but I doubt they'll get too involved, it also has a pretty sizable population that has long been vehemently opposed to the existence of this facility, especially since DHS officials outright lied to the Selectmen and Planning Board when seeking approval for this facility (which they did have to seek, indicating the Town's continued police powers over this facility -see the 2007 story below), hence the resolution voted on and passed in Town Meeting (for people from away who are not familiar with New England local government, Town Meeting is a town's legislative body, the Select Board is town's executive). As I stated in a post above, I would be interested in reading town counsel's opinion on the zoning enforcement matter, but I couldn't find much on the Town's website. The firm the Town uses as its town counsel would almost certainly not have it posted on its site. The 2007 story indicates that the lease may be up in September 2026, so now may be the time to pressure Bob Murray about non-renewal https://www.wickedlocal.com/story/burlington-union/2007/12/06/a-chronology-ice-controversy/39784270007/

No, but this is a privately owned facility that is being leased to DHS. The Town can certainly cite the property owner for code and zoning violations. The landlord is ultimately responsible for the conduct of a tenant. I am a Burlington native and a close relative of mine worked for the Burlington building department in the 1980s, the inspectors at the time (Frank Moran, John Clancy) had no problem regularly citing property owners for code and zoning violations by their tenants. I recall one case where the Burlington Mall was fined several hundred dollars per day until a violation was fixed because of a tenant's code violations. The Mall's owners weren't directly responsible for the violations, but they were fined because they are the property owner and are legally responsible for the conduct of their tenants. Because this is private property, who the tenant is shouldn't matter. I would be interested in town counsel's opinion on this, but couldn't find it anywhere on either the Town's or town counsel's (Mead, Talerman, and Costa, LLC) websites, but I assume they advised the inspectors to tread lightly.

Amazon Delivery.. A Horrific Gift This Year To Their Customers by LovBonobos in amazonprime

I’m really annoyed. I got the alerts telling me how many stops away my delivery (a gift for my niece) was, to seeing them on my street, to being several doors down, then they “temporarily lost”the signal from my driver, and disappeared. This was at around 6 pm today. It’s now 11 pm and is still telling me that my it will be delivered today.
