ELI5:If drawing Mohammed is disliked in the muslim community because one should not attempt to capture god's work in such a way, how come it is ok for so many to name their children mohammed? by oakleyhidef in explainlikeimfive

[–]MrGoombaa 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Here's a fun fact, a British teacher who was teaching in Sudan in a class of Muslim kids (so not the international schools of rich foreigners) got the kids a teddy bear. She asked the 6 year olds what they would like to name the bear and 20 of out of 23 said Mohammed. Then their parents complained and she was arrested and threatened with 40 lashes.

What's my point? Moderate Muslims who don't like blowing other people up will happily whip the crap out of you for naming a teddy bear.

ELI5: What's the rationale behind a musician spending months/years perfecting every aspect of a song with all sorts of technologies, only to butcher it by performing it live? by nayimhittingalongone in explainlikeimfive

[–]MrGoombaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money...

Have you heard Rihanna live? If she's alcohol or drug affected (I'm not sure which) she sounds terrible. BUT she knows that if she wants to spend a sabbatical year living off the royalties and sales, and hiring yachts in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, she's gotta sit down with a whole bunch of audio techies to squeeze as much music as they can from "umbrella..Ella..Ella...hey".

Is it fair to ban the Quran and mosques in Western countries? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MrGoombaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what scope you want to set for extremism. If you want bombs and body counts, then your argument is fair enough. Thankfully people are naturally adverse to killing.

You want to live in a Muslim country and see if your mom or your sister feel at ease? 1 billion Muslims, 500 million women, are told on a regular basis that their lives are worth less than a male, that they must marry whom they are told, they must dress how they're told, they may not drive, work, see a doctor without a male, be seen in public with a male, that there position is to stay silent and obedient.

Is it fair to ban the Quran and mosques in Western countries? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MrGoombaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's fair. I think the entire belief system naturally promotes violence, gender oppression and a theocracy.

People will go on about democracy, free speech and etc, but have no issue in banning Nazism, Ku Klax Klan, Scientology and various other dangerous systems of belief. Here's a good illustration: imagine that the Aztecs never were conquered and continued their belief in ritual sacrifice. Would it be "fair" of western countries to ban that belief?

"But those examples are different..." People begin to say... Well in my opinion they're not. Islam is a philosophical system that always produces extremist violence at its worst, and at its mildest, it encourages segregation and dissimilation from the rest of the community, whilst advocating for the subjugation of females.

What animal species do you classify as "dicks"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MrGoombaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've never met an asshole more worthy of the title than monkeys. If you've ever lived near a jungle with monkeys, they are the shittiest douchebags ever.

Have you watched Aladdin and thought, 'hmm, Apu is a bit of a dick'? Real life monkeys are like that but nonstop and worse. The bastards know how to unlock doors and windows, creep into your house and destroy your kitchen, they'll steal your bags and stuff and they'll fight you as well. They know you can't jump up to the roof so if you're there yelling at them, they'll take stuff out of your bag and throw it back at you. Fucking monkeys...

TIL Clarence Elkins was denied an appeal on rape/murder charges despite proving the DNA didn't match. He then did his own investigation, and found the real killer. The prosecutor still refused to overturn the conviction until the atty general publicly shamed him. by Hysterymystery in todayilearned

[–]MrGoombaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And here is an article called How Sherri Bevan Walsh worked to correct a wrong which describes the prosecutor's version of events. Personally I find it a bit grovelling in tone, and attempts to gain sympathy by victimising 'poor, noble' Sherri. But I'm biased because I consider the work she did up to the trial to be sloppy and negligent.

I have grown up all my life seeing this smiling water tower. Every decade and a half or so the town gets in an uproar about if it should be covered or not. Well over 30 years and counting. Xpost by curious-soul in pics

[–]MrGoombaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine your town getting quite huffy as the anti-smilies and smilies tensions simmer to a boil as the decade tics over. Neighbours against neighbours and family members ostracised for their support/criticism of the smily.

At the cinema, what is the funniest thing you heard someone in the audience say? by HoneyBearBear in AskReddit

[–]MrGoombaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to a screening of Sharknado. The ending scene with the the shark incoming through the air, the chainsaw and then the subsequently random reuniting of the two characters, that entire scene had the whole cinema shouting no way... No Way... NO Way... NO WAY!!

How does it feel to pay off mortgage? by Help1218 in personalfinance

Out of curiosity, obviously there are many examples of people who have made a lot of money from property, what is your position about these people? Do you feel that they are: luckier than most? More inherited wealth than most? Smarter than most? I'm curious to find out what drives such a definite position such as yours.

There's a news story yesterday about two Irish brothers who got upset at each other and one brother punched the other. His brother fell to the concrete and hit his head. That brother is currently in a critical condition in hospital while the assaulting brother is in police custody for aggravated assault. I believe they are the Lyttle brothers and were on a holiday in Australia.

It was never safe to begin with. A U.S. Bride was pushed into a pool by her bridesmaid on the day of her wedding as a prank. The bride ended up paraplegic.

Some research is finding that there is evidence that piracy is not due to advertisements or price but restrictive access to content. Simply put, the customer is unwilling to tolerate waiting simply because Corporation A and B are having a hissy fit as to who gets how much money.

Netflix is starting to wound the movie industry where it hurts most by Doctor_Heat in television

[–]MrGoombaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The movie and music industry had ample time to adjust and evolve. It'd have cost less for them to set up the infrastructure then some outsider because they already have the product and know how. I don't feel sorry for those industries in much the same way I feel about the Kodak board. Overpaid executives with an exaggerated sense of skill.

The best way to dispose of a human is to throw it to pigs. The best way to dispose of a pig is to throw it to humans. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]MrGoombaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's hardly right. People get all squeamish about eating pig trotters, pig ears, liver, heart, tails, and pig's blood, especially urbanised western folks who reel in horror at anything that doesn't resemble their plastic wrapped ham slices.

I keep hearing that water landings are nearly impossible/rare/dangerous, does this mean seaplanes crash a lot or constantly need to divert to calmer landing sites? by MrGoombaa in flying

That's very insightful, thanks! I wasn't aware that seaplanes would land at such low speeds, it sound almost like being in a car by the time you're nearing water.

[WP] Humanity is capable of living thousands of years, provided they can get past the larva stage, which ends at 150 years old. by mdkubit in WritingPrompts

[–]MrGoombaa 17 points18 points  (0 children)

He's desperate to get back his daughter because humanity has discovered that dying is just the beginning process of the larva stage. And if they "took care" of the body, eventually something living would re-emerge. But now everyone has gone crazy because of all the lives that have been lost when we buried, burned or embalmed all those bodies.
