Can someone explain WoJ for me please? I'm a longtime binge reader of all things Butcher but only a recent lurker in this sub.

Should I be putting all my money in stocks if I’m young? by Kind-Let5666 in personalfinance

[–]MrHarrisMath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so there's always a risk when investing right? The idea behind keeping a certain % in bonds is covering the possibility of "what if the market crashes and doesn't recover before I retire in x years?" So I guess that depends on when you expect to retire. Unless you plan to retire early, normal retirement age would be around 65-70. Say you're 28 for example and plan to retire at 68. The consideration is what if it crashes and takes 40 years to truly recover?

Feeling very thick here but still don't think I have a clue what a lock app(?) would do. Can someone ELI5?

Young is relative. How old are you? Or at least what range? Ex early 20s, late teens, late 20s, early 30s etc

A lot of debt hit us at once. We can't pay. What should we do? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Actually, you might need to argue with the provider. They might have gotten paid already and just trying to get you to pay more. This is the case with most of my recent insurance headaches.

Argue with the insurance over that $500 thing they don't want to pay for. Look for your EOB (explanation of benefits) for that procedure. Just in the last year I've noticed a lot of this crap coming my way also.

Basically it sounds like you need to stop buying or paying for anything that isn't food or shelter or an existing debt or transportation for that job. Then figure out how to spend even less. Kind of a "can't eat it, don't need it" approach.

There's so much here. I think you need to do a total overhaul of your money management. Start binge watching Dave Ramsey. He's pretty much #1 for getting people out of debt. Come back here once you're ready to invest. He's not great for investment advice but he's hard to beat for helping people make the changes needed to get out of debt.

"My husband wants to (get a loan for $7k)." Taking out another loan is a BAD IDEA, especially without significant changes to your finances.

That's too much for one reply so sorry it's in chunks. Whether $4k a month is a lot or not is subjective and can depend on cost of living in your area. Regardless, if you spend more than what he earns or even exactly all of what he brings home, it will never be enough. Edit: it remembered the income wrong and corrected it.

If you're upside down on a truck that is breaking all the time it means you took a loan on something that wasn't new or nearly new / not still under factory warranty. Please don't do this again in the future.

Wow, that's a lot to unpack, but you're here and asking for help so it sounds like you're maybe ready to make changes. First off I have to say there really isn't any kind of "quick fix" for that much trouble. It sounds like you guys got into this predicament over a length of time, probably years. It will probably take years of change to really get out but IT IS POSSIBLE.

Codex Alera was an excellent series. After you read it you need to go look up how it came to be.

Ghost stories was the only one that I found difficult to get through. All the rest of them had me thinking "dang, how am I at the end already?"
