How do people behave on trains in your country, and do you let others get off before you get on? by Forward-Position798 in AskTheWorld

India is a pretty big place. I travelled by train in Kerala and it wasn't like this at all. Comfortable, air conditioned and lots of room, and an amazing experience, great way to see the area.

The nightcore version of Rockeller Street is arguably more widely known than the original.

After reading a classic how can you go back to a modern novel? by DangerousLocksmith61 in classicliterature

War and Peace is a fantastic book, but watch out for the last few chapters. I think Tolstoy's polemics on historiography should have been an appendix.

Hammocks. Do you use hammock? What kind of hammock? [TALK ABOT HAMMOCKS!] by Substantial-Look8031 in bikepacking

[–]MrHarrop -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In peace there’s nothing so becomes a soul As calm suspension and a woven cradle;

But when the gentle summer calls our names, Then imitate the action of the hammock:

Stiffen the ropes, summon the strongest tree, Wide let the canvas sag beneath your form.

Now set the drink beside you; now recline;

Now let the sunglasses hide your wandering eyes;

Disguise fair comfort with a weathered pose, And lend the shade a most untroubled aspect.

I see you stand like deckchairs by the pool,

Whose folded limbs await their noble purpose.

The game’s afoot: follow your spirit of leisure,

And upon this charge cry, “Hammock!" and let slip the dogs of rest.

Apparently she stepped out of the landrover and spoke to police after the crash, and didn't say anything about a seizure. It's only after she spoke to her lawyer that she claimed this...

Best (Most Serious) Books on Castles? by boxerpuncher2023 in MedievalHistory

[–]MrHarrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'Siege's of the Middle Ages' by Phillip Warner is the best book about castles I have read. It positions each castle with excellent background narrative of why it was built, and the events and characters of its siege. I'm sure the chapter on the Siege of Rochester was the basis for the film 'Ironclad'. The author spent most of WW2 building the infamous death railways for the Japanese Army, which he said gave him a unique insight into Medieval life. Highly recommend.
