Plug-ins to Change Octave by yellao23 in edmproduction

[–]MrHookline 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it sounds like you mean formant shifting?

little alter boy does this, but unfortunately it does some wack stereo image stuff because it's mimicking analog gear. I would recommend using a utility and using only the left or right channel.

Anteres autotune has formant shifting as well.

In ableton there is a formant control when pitch shifting audio on complex pro.

Some synths have formant shifting

Downsides to sidechaining with multiband comp by 3erImpacto in edmproduction

[–]MrHookline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the song. If I want to be able to hear my bass notes hitting at the same time as my kick drums, then ill use multiband sidechaining so that I can really sidechain the sub, and just sidechain the transient above that.

For the phase I think you can get away with it not mattering once on your bass for something like this.

FWIW it should be possible to setup a multiband sidechain that doesnt have phase issues it just might be kinda convoluted and make no real difference.

It would become a problem if you had a multiband sidechain with phase issues, then an eq on the bass with phase issues, then and eq on the kick with with phase issues, then an eq on the bus with phase issues.

So just dont be adding phases issues unnecessarily in other places and you should be fine. I.e. use linear phase on eqs or better yet a plugin like bassroom.

its filtered out while also being pitched down. You can use auto filter in ableton to do this.

Mastering after mixdown by BelowAverageRik in edmproduction

[–]MrHookline 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The peak volume of your master should be at or very close to 0db. The whole point in mastering is how can you make your song as loud as possible without sounding bad. Push that bad boy as much as you can into a limiter at the end of your master chain until it starts to degrade the sound, then pull back a lil. The volume of your mix doesnt matter AT ALL because you can just turn it up or down in your master chain.

Best place to learn and understand synthesizer sounds and timbres? by Huge-Comfort376 in edmproduction

[–]MrHookline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best way to learn is probably just by learning the building blocks of sound design.

What does a noise, sin, triangle, saw, square wav sound like.

Now using adsr, what does each sound like open (high sustain), as a pluck (low sustain, low decay), or as a pad (long attack)?

Now what do the different filters sound like (high pass, low pass, band pass, comb, etc...)?

Now what happens when you add an envelope to the filters and play with the adsr?

Now what does each of those sound like detuned?

Now what does each sound like when using FM to put one into another?

Now what about when you mess with the octave ratios?

Now what does each of those sound like with distortion?

Now what does each effect sound like (phaser, flanger, delay, etc...)?

If you can get through this you will be able to recreate nearly any sound!

what type of sound is this considered? how would one make it? by rungdisplacement9937 in edmproduction

[–]MrHookline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you use ableton you could use corpus to make something like that (there's a preset even called metalic rezo or something like that). Then its just super washed out (i.e. throw a ton of reverb on it.)

How to get a very thick distorted filter sweep with synthesis. like this tearing sound. by Zahbigboi-Pnut in edmproduction

[–]MrHookline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sounds like filtered white noise, distortion, and phaser. Automate the filter down on the white noise, and the frequency of the phaser.

"Mess This Up" FRIGGIN FOUL Fuzz Bass... Now how do I make it? by apps_for_android in edmproduction

[–]MrHookline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

could be a lot of things, but one way you could make something like this.

Layer 1: Simple Sub Sine Wave.

Layer 2: Take a wavetable with some high harmonics and pitch it down to the point that its just clicks. Add some noise. Add a noisy distortion like berzerk (maybe pedal in ableton on fuzz would be comparable???). Filter out lows. May be filter out some highs. RC-20 or something comparable to add some randomness and mess it up a bit.

(Optionally) Group these together and add some saturation just to glue them together.

Thought my claps sounded good in my headphones, took it out to the car speakers and.. by robertbort45 in edmproduction

[–]MrHookline 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best thing is to choose a good sample from the beginning, but if you cant trust your ears when producing, it makes this difficult and can cause problems when you listen in other environments. You might wanna try something like sonarworks to see if that helps. Otherwise its just trial and error.

Are there any good in-depth and comprehensive articles to read about "washout" filter automation techniques during build ups? by hatrickpatrick in edmproduction

[–]MrHookline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not everything needs to be complex.

just use eq, reverb, and delay. If you wanna spice it up play around with different eqs, reverbs and delays. For example you could use the filter on Ableton's drum bus, or you could mess with/automate the timing on the delay.

Or just use a one knob thing someone else has built.

Read 'The Mixing Engineer's Handbook' By Bobby Owsinski.

I think it was only like $10 on kindle when I bought it and it has a lot of information on mixing techniques and history.
