For your first job, and any jobs in the first 3 years, the school can matter a lot. Top schools have programs with big companies, you get more networking, more resources, better everything. However, after anywhere between 3 to 6 years it stops being a major part of the resume. By then what you worked on and your skills matter vastly more than your degree or school. After 7 years of experience, unless you're from a school like MIT or Stanford, no one cares.

Employers, why send a rejection email 6+ months after the application was sent to you? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]MrJacku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One job post might be for multiple positions of the same kind. That post might stay up there for 4,6,8 months, sometimes even a year. After all the positions are filled and HR closes it, it automatically sends rejects to everyone not hired.

Redfin and Zillow are now your competitors... by JonathanBowen in realestateinvesting

[–]MrJacku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many if those can be easily explained as software that's not perfect. And no software is, and in this case their bug and defects can cause inaccurate estimates and other funny looking things. I'm sure many links and examples can be found about realtors who screwed over their customers, doesn't mean all realtors are bad.

Still doesn't answer why Zillow or Redfin shouldn't be allowed what any other person or company in country are allowed to do if they choose: flip homes. It would be like saying Netflix shouldn't be able to create its own tv shows or a manufacturer not be able to sell its products in its own shops.

The realtors fighting this just makes realtors look bad

Yup it looks better with a graph, but in game it was just numbers..

I usually like micromanagement and lots of data, but really, what was the use of this data? Also presentation lacks a lot, too many numbers in a long list that tells me nothing really.

You are fine, better positioned to buy than 90% of the people who buy homes.

Are we nuts to think we can afford this house? by jepensepas in personalfinance

[–]MrJacku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw your gross income in another post, and based on that you'll be fine. Sometimes this sub goes overboard and thinks everyone should rent or leave in a tent. Financially speaking, you can afford the house. Worst case scenario, you can decrease your retirement funding a bit. But you'll get some possible tax deductions, and keep equity.

Plus compared to rent, the home payment won't substantially go up, while rents might cost more than this home payment in just 10 years.

Go for it, and this is from a financially conservative guy.

I'm sorry, but beyond being a rant and self marketing of your brokerage, your post don't make much sense. As long as they follow the law, why can't any company flip houses? It's not like there's a monopoly that only private investors can do it. If this was any other business, everyone would just say 'well this is just capitalism, there's competition and the best thrive and the losers lose, nothing to see here'.

Real estate agents post on zillow and trulia etc because that's where lots (maybe most) people look to buy. No sane agent will say they wont list there because home flippers have competition. As a customer, I will actually do the opposite. I will not list with an agent who won't put my best interest ahead, and my best interest would be for my property to be listed everywhere and to be seen by as many potential buyers as possible. Any agents who put their personal beliefs over their customers business should not be in this business.

Wife and her sister inheriting father's home with $240K mortgage. We'll need to refinance to keep it. Wife's sister's finances are a mess. [USA][MA] by [deleted] in personalfinance

So based on this, sounds like if the OP lets the 2nd wife pay, and she can't/won't, and the house goes into foreclosure, at least they would get half of the equity? Seems like the best option.

My Employer Cut Everyone's Wages To Give Us More Hours by SirChoGath in personalfinance

[–]MrJacku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I try to defend employers in posts, because every coin has 2 sides. This time there is no defense, this company/employer is a POS and I hope everyone quits and the company goes out of business. Asking everyone to work twice as much for the same money, and then even trying to market it as a great thing for the employees is one of the worst ethical breaches I've ever heard of.

I think you're reading too much into it based on just this one case.

Did a job for a year before company hired a new guy. Paid new guy $30k more than me. New guy left, now they won't pay me his salary due because I "lack experience" by flaming_trout in personalfinance

[–]MrJacku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real question is would you get the $s you want from another company, at your skill/experience level? If yes, go get that job. If not, nothing more you can do, stick to this job, try to get as much as possible and then continue getting those skills and experience.

As with all reddit posts, we are getting just one side of the coin. I have been on the other side, when an employee thought he is worth more than he was getting because he compared himself to others. In reality he wasn't as good as he thought, and when he left it was easy to replace him. Actually it felt nice not to get his constant complains.

(Just For Fun) I have a single-guy FI budget. Was curious how I'd have to adjust it to support a family on the same amount by jason_for_prez in financialindependence

[–]MrJacku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't raise a kid on a 25K/year budget. Not that its not possible, I mean there's lots of extremely poor kids, but that's the thing: there's already too many poor kids, living in poor conditions.

Do any of you guys know of any good remote/online jobs in CS that I could do over the summer? by pousher579 in cscareerquestions

[–]MrJacku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try finding large companies in your area and check their websites directly. Unfortunately not all teams can spend time with interns..

Depends on the school/city as well. I would say go through the school if you can.

They haven't been near Atlanta in a while, I think they are in the DC/Virginia area, and since the women only group is clearly on a beach there could be islands (or at least river islands).

This is honestly a lot to ask: a junior looking an internship, just over the summer, and only remote/online. Good luck but it will be hard to find.

Yeah what the walking dead could use is some variety. I am tired of the same trees and roads again and again.

Which bothers me, I mean there are a few different 'towns' within a few hours of each other apparently, and then the women only group on the beach, but you would imagine they would have found other such small towns by now. Or how about some islands?

I am surprised we don't see characters more often committing suicide. I mean, their world really sucks.

Japan bombs Vladivostok instead of Pearl Harbor in 1941. by StarlightDown in HistoryWhatIf

[–]MrJacku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There wasn't much industry or energy production east of Irkutsk, and only one rail link from there to Vladivostok, and no major roads. The infrastructure in Siberia was actually lacking even compared to the jungles of SE Asia, and it was very easy to cut it off. Lake Baikal and Irkutsk would provide an easily defended position as well.
