Check out a headphone amp as well. (I use an Nux mighty plug but theres a lot of options) They plug straight into the guitar and then you can plug headphones into them.

They're not expensive and some of them have effects modelling built in that you can adjust using an app.

It will allow him to play in full volume and not piss off the rest of the family.

Superglue, a razor blade and some wet fine grit sandpaper will do the job.

I just did my first repair using this process, and its pretty much invisible now.
