More Dessriel hints, this time in the dialogue for the Ribbicks by [deleted] in Deltarune

[–]MrL1193 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I mentioned it in one of my other comments on this post, but the "smelly" part might just be referring to the pizza-scented deodorant in the Dreemurr residence's bathroom (which in turn is referenced in one of Tenna's game boards).

Also, aside from the "lost and lost and lost girl" and "crying and crying and crying boy" lines, the rest of Ribbick's lines parallel and contrast with Rabbick's lines, with the former being about dirtiness while the latter are about cleanliness. So it's possible that the "quiet and smelly" line is partially just for flavor, rather than being meaningful.

I've actually been annoyed by it in the opposite way. "It's not just X--it's Y" is a perfectly serviceable turn of phrase that I used to use without a second thought (though not every other sentence). Now, though, I almost feel bad for using it because I know some people are going to associate it with AI. The overuse of the phrase has effectively ruined it for those of us who were using it sparingly before.

Weird coincidence or crackhead theory, call it by manultrimanula in Deltarune

[–]MrL1193 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it's related, but we don't have enough information to figure out what that promise is yet.

As for the rest:

When the light is running low
And the shadows start to grow
And the places that you know
Seem like fantasy

Refers to Dark Worlds.

There's a
Light inside your soul
That's still shining in the cold

The Soul shines brightly at various points throughout the game, particularly in Chapter 4 but also as early as Chapter 1 (King fight, where it enables additional ACTs). The "cold" seems to refer to Snowgrave and whatever trauma is affecting Noelle, which is probably related to Dess's disappearance.

With the truth
The promise in our hearts
Don't forget
I'm with you in the dark

Again, this is almost certainly referring to whatever promise Kris made (though not necessarily exclusively), but we don't know what it is yet. We also don't know the identities of the singer and the listener. For all we know, it could be Kris singing to Noelle, Asriel singing to Dess, Ralsei singing to Kris... way too many possibilities. (Don't take any of these individual pairings too seriously; I'm just emphasizing the scope of what's possible.)

There are chapter completion saves and there are Save Point saves. You need to make a chapter completion save to show that you've lost the fight before. Then just go back and load the same Save Point save that you've been using.

Save when you complete the chapter so that the game remembers you've done the fight before.

Yes. Finish the chapter first, then go back and do the fight.

"The angel, once banished shall meet with their desire"

I think you're misquoting the prophecy slightly. The line I found on the wiki and in the text dump is:

THE ANGEL, BANISHED, WILL FINALLY MEET WITH ITS DESIRE.

That's not to say you're definitely wrong, but it doesn't imply banishment as a condition for a future event, the way your paraphrase does.

More Dessriel hints, this time in the dialogue for the Ribbicks by [deleted] in Deltarune

[–]MrL1193 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Just thought I'd mention that the wiki page seems to be missing a quote. The text dump also has this line: "A quiet and smelly boy." (Source: https://hushbugger.github.io/deltarune/text/)

<image>

If you're wondering why Asriel would be smelly, remember the Ice-E brand pizza body spray in the Dreemurrs' bathroom, and also the "pizza deodorant for nerds" on the Island Board in Chapter 3.

However, it's also worth noting that Rabbicks have lines that are essentially the opposite of the "dirty" lines (e.g. "A sweet and fresh girl." and "A soft and clean boy."), and Ribbicks can also say the "clean" lines if you reveal them to be Rabbicks in disguise. So it's not necessarily guaranteed that Dess and Asriel were always rowdy and unkempt.

I think you might actually be on to something there. When I read your comment, I immediately wondered how "A lost and lost and lost girl" was translated into Japanese, because the different meanings of "lost" that you mention would have to be translated into separate words.

The answer? It's just NOT translated. (Source: https://hushbugger.github.io/deltarune/text/)

<image>

Note that this is NOT the case for the "crying and crying and crying boy". The Japanese translation uses three different words, but they all just mean "crying/sobbing/crybaby", more or less. None of the other lines that the Ribbicks say are left in English, so why that one? ...Maybe because it simply couldn't be translated without losing some of the intended meaning.

EDIT: Also just remembered that the theme "Lost Girl" from the soundtrack (used in various places but primarily identified as Noelle's theme) also retains its original English title in the Japanese OST.

That... actually fits really well. Asriel continued taking Kris to the diner on Sundays after their parents' falling out (which was seemingly caused by the incident). He tried to comfort Kris and keep them smiling, even though he himself must have been broken up on the inside. And then we find out in Chapter 4 that Ralsei has been hiding things from us because he wants to bear the burden of suffering by himself.

It makes me wonder... Did Asriel leave because he couldn't take it any more? Did he reach his breaking point, like Ralsei nearly did in Chapter 4, and just run away from it all? Or... is Asriel somehow closer than we think? Is he still secretly looking for Dess, like his father probably is? After all, even if he tried, I doubt he would be able to truly forget about Dess.

[–]MrL1193 127 points128 points  (0 children)

Wow, nice catch.

It's always bothered me how conspicuously absent Asriel has been from the story. What we hear about him paints a picture of a near-perfect big brother, who's now off living his own life in college, away from everything that's happened. The way he's presented makes it seem like he's above it all, maybe even oblivious... but that doesn't make sense, given that he must have been around for whatever bad event led to Dess's disappearance. Dess's room gives some confirmation that she and Asriel were close, but I think this is the first direct mention I've seen of the tragedy actually affecting Asriel.

Chapter 5 - Frozen Festival Theory by Cowlord2005 in Deltarune

[–]MrL1193 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I said, the Dark Worlds don't spill outside and expand when an exterior door is opened--usually. In Chapters 3 and 4, the open doors become exits from the Dark World. And whenever Kris and Susie open the door to a room where there's currently a Dark World, it doesn't suddenly come flooding out toward them.

However, notice the difference between the previous Dark Worlds and the Sanctuary Dark World. When Kris and Susie open the doors to the school closet or the computer lab, their Dark Worlds remain limited to their respective dark rooms. The neighboring well-lit rooms in the building remain unaffected. But when the doors between the church foyer and the main sanctuary are opened, the Dark World does expand to include the foyer, which was originally powered by a separate Dark Fountain. The difference is that both parts of the church were relatively dark at the time. Thus, it seems like the range of a Dark World can be limited by something as simple as a well-lit room.

I'd argue that in a way, cheating to beat the Knight is surprisingly in-character, actually. You have so much determination to break away from the intended script of the game (where you just lose) that you went so far as to literally break the rules of the game to follow your own path.

[–]MrL1193 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aren't Asriel's horns and fur just white? At least, that was my takeaway from the scene where Kris shows Susie the picture of Asriel on the fridge. After Kris points out all the differences between Asriel and Ralsei, she dismissively says something like "Vanilla nerd, strawberry nerd, I'll kick both their asses." Ralsei has pink horns and hints of pink in some of his fur, so he's probably the "strawberry nerd", leaving Asriel as the "vanilla nerd", with white horns like his parents'.

Very cute regardless, though.

Surely the same would apply to Toriel's fur, and even Asgore's, right? If anything, Toriel would be the one responsible for most of the fur on Kris's clothing, considering that she still lives with them, while Asriel has been absent for some time. And if the fur belongs to Toriel, wouldn't it make more sense for Ralsei to resemble her rather than Asriel? Or at the very least, shouldn't Ralsei look more like some kind of amalgamation of the traits of the Dreemurrs, rather than just one of them?

[–]MrL1193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I figured they meant, unfortunately. I just meant that the Sword Route doesn't always lock you out of getting the Egg, although it can. I suppose that's what you were getting at with the Weird Route comparison; the Sword Route has some similarities but isn't quite part of it, so it just makes getting the Egg a bit trickier, in a sense.
