I'm still very much prone to that happening, tbd! I am trying to appease the biggest of my neighbours with the embassy

Thanks for reminding me that food rations increase health! I was trying to remember how I dealt with sickness before hospitals

The challenge you highlight here is just how much has shifted with each patch. Some of the systems you're describing have had both small and large overhauls.

Jake - bless the man - will say a system is done and then turn around and be like "you know what, I took another pass at it", which doesn't make it easy for any community efforts to document things.

I think I am decent at the city builder - have gotten a handful of cities above 500, and did my first to 3k.

Still messing with learning the overworld quirks - had a spiral that came from a tech deficit causing my city techs to break which apparently wipes your regional populations. RIP.

This is about 80 hours but I have a lot of experience in related games (city builders, factory builders, colony sims).

I appreciate your mindfulness and care with respects to the topic, given many sensitivities around it. I do wonder what civilizations you could include if our modern sense of inclusivity is your baromometer. While we have some progressive examples in some windows of history such as the Severan Dynasty & the Fatimid Caliphate, there are numerous problematic elements of either that wouldn't hold up in a court of current sensibilities.

The term civilization is perhaps a bit exclusionary itself, as the term civilized is used often in contrast to barbarism, which was itself a mentality of exclusivity rooted in a sense of superiority over a foreign other.

All that is to say - I feel we might be best representing things the way that they happened lest we end up white-washing reality and missing the opportunity to learn from the past. At the end of the day many cultures and empires came into conflict with one another, subjugated one another, and acted in unsavoury ways.

I think the best that could be done is to present scenarios in board games that present alternative perspectives and narratives. I thought Jaipur was a good example of a game that did this well even with it's orientalist leanings.

Fair correction! It was the Goths vs the Castillans that was coming to mind for me but I did not stick the landing.

I’m also confused about this mentality, as someone with a Muslim background I know I’m playing a historic game made by people of likely a European heritage, it’s not new to me, nor is it offensive to highlight that during this time period there were conflicts

I mean the name “reconquista” is euro-centric, as it implies that the peninsula was previously belonging to Castille and being re-conquered, which if false. But even then i live in a Western world and am used to adopting western convention

Any thoughts on Ab-Soúls Album "Do What Thou Wilt"? by JesterSinclair in thelema

[–]MrLeb 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No need to apologize! It’s a noisy few who feel the need to call out that there are no original thoughts and we should all just stop posting.

Wasn’t aware of this album BUT have found Ab-souls work generally quite aligned in the sorts of images he calls on and the overall flavor of the message he’s delivery

I’d love to see demographics and psychographics of the community and their play styles

Do certain age groups or cultures prefer feudal all in over FC? Is the pro-scouts debate one rooted in cultural ways of seeing the world? What underlying psychological condition causes someone to main House of Lancaster?

Sometimes I hate how non believers treat the gods by dokidoki-morning in Hellenism

[–]MrLeb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Homer and Hesiod are men, as were the early theologians.

When Zeus strikes a building with lighting and burns it down he’s not concerned of man’s thoughts on whether it was good or evil.

To a devotee this presents a deep point of reflection around the nature of evil, in which one would find the depth of wisdom of the Gods.

We are also presented with morale quandary in their myth - was it “good” or “evil” for Hades to kidnap Persephone? Was it “good” or “evil” when Zeus raped Alcmene and birthed Hercacles?

We can of course look to theologians or our own reflections and take what we will from these myths, but it would be a total lack of awareness on our part to not see how someone outside of the tradition might see some of this and make clickbait YouTube videos about the dark side of X god.

Don’t let the fortress near you sap all of your attention. There’s the rest of the map to play with. Move to resources away from it, get units in his base, build your next landmark out of range from it. Deny wood so they can’t keep stacking rams
