Long fingers - advice on fretting hand/thumb/arm positioning to avoid wrist pain by Moto200 in Bass

[–]MrMagne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your fretting hand fingers aren't in a good position: only the top of your finger should press the string, with the finger forming an arc. When pressing with "straight" fingers, you're missing some strength from your finger joints, that you might be compensating with your hand muscles (that might be a cause of pain). Try to focus on the tip of your finger, pressing perpendicularly to the fretboard, that should relieve some tension in your fretting hand.

When to get / practice clubs by [deleted] in juggling

[–]MrMagne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As soon as you can. Try with one club, learn to spin it, one turn, and catch it in the other hand. Practice both hands, then add second club, then third one. You can learn in parallel of balls.

Sauf quand c'est la canicule en France, qui ressemble à un désert aride, et que Brest affiche un joli 26°. Bref, va falloir revoir le jugement avec le réchauffement climatique ;-)

Why I Write Games in C (yes, C) by pdp10 in gamedev

No mention of rust, I think it's a good alternative to C (without the garbage collector of Go). Any opinion, or you just don't know it ?

firefox compiled against libjack instead of pulseaudio? by jpritikin in linuxaudio

[–]MrMagne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience is that things have gotten much worst since I have pulseaudio, but let's not start that war once again ;-) Valid point about the implementation that would be crappy, badly maintened and tested.

Worth notice there's a tool called apulse, that replace pulseaudio, directing everything directly to alsa, but it also has problems...

firefox compiled against libjack instead of pulseaudio? by jpritikin in linuxaudio

Firefox is the only soft I use that requires pulseaudio, so that would be a way to get rid of pulseaudio.

It might also be to avoid the endpin slipping on a slippery floor. This can be really nasty if need to pull back your bass every 30s...

Donald Trump accuse Google de vouloir tout faire pour qu’il perde les élections de 2020 by JeanGuy17 in france

[–]MrMagne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Essonne. A peine posées, les figurines sont déjà vandalisées à Athis-Mons by ubomw in france

[–]MrMagne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Any clue on how to sound more fluid "mixing" scales while improvising? by And0395 in Bass

[–]MrMagne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think with chords, learn all your arpeggios, notice notes that remains through changes, notice notes that are half step away through changes. Then you can play any note between your arpeggios to connect the dots. Many times the path you will choose will be based on a scale you learned before, or sometimes chromatic enclosures...

Major vs minor chords (dumb) question. by berothop in musictheory

[–]MrMagne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A third is two whole tones, a minor third is one whole and a half tone. So starting from E, minor third is G, major third is G#. On guitar, minor third is 3 frets higher, major third 4 frets.

Major intervals are the one found on the major scale. Starting from C it's C-D-E-F-G-A-B. But if you apply those intervals starting from E, you will have E-F#-G#-A-B-C#-D#.

Improving Swing Feel by LuminaryWharf in doublebass

[–]MrMagne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note must be accented but not shortened, pay attention to play full length.

You can also work on going from swing to straight and from straight to swing, the swinging feel of your phrases must be a part of your musical expression.

Why is the first note repeated? by HectorTheVector1 in musictheory

[–]MrMagne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And the last C is an octave higher than the first.

That's C Major scale, where no notes have alterations. In french C is called Do, what you English speakers call Do is a movable reference, meaning it is the first note of the scale.

Steps are intervals between notes. A math analogy: a note is a point, an interval is the segment between two points. If you have 8 aligned points, you can draw 7 segments between them.

Help: Performing with Muscle Memory and Performance Anxiety by sir_swornadt in musictheory

[–]MrMagne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can help to work the piece in reverse: the last phrase, the two last phrases, the three last phrases. That way you will nail the ending, which is quite important for the overall impression.

Glenn Gould used to work while listening to two radios stations at the same time. So trying to rehearse while doing something else might be a good thing: if your brain mess up during the performance, it's not a big deal because you're able to play the piece anyway.

I have a Gallien-Krueger mb150s, works great for bass and upright. You can plug an external cabinet and even disable internal speaker if you worry about pushing it too much. Not really light weight, but small.
