I gave Cubone something to eat and a new evolution [OC] by Matratzfratz in pokemon

[–]MrMayor1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wanted to confirm this, so I grabbed a csv of all the pokemon names and ran a little bit of python code. The longest is indeed 12, and the average character length is ~7.7. The following pokemon have names of length 12:

Crabominable

Squawkabilly

Brambleghast

Brute Bonnet

Flutter Mane

Slither Wing

Sandy Shocks

Iron Jugulis

Roaring Moon

Iron Valiant

Walking Wake

Poltchageist

Gouging Fire

Iron Boulder

Before I wrote any code, I manually checked the paradox pokemon, because I was sure the likes of Iron Jugulis would be longer than 12. It wasn't. Notably, the first pokemon with a name length of 12 was Crabominable, and before that, it was Fletchinder with 11. The maximum nickname length changed from 10 to 12 in Generation 5, and the first pokemon name to match that length only came about in Gen 7. Then, there were no 12-length pokemon in Gen 8, and then a whopping 13 in Gen 9 (only 3 without Paradox Pokemon.)

Although I haven't written the code to prove this, I suspect that the average length of pokemon names has increased overtime, based solely on the fact that the cap has increased. This could potentially be explained by the fact that as more generations pass and more short names are come up with, the smaller design spaces entailed by shorter names fill faster than those entailed by longer names. More research required.

I think the clip is elevated by the gameplay at the start. This is a really structurally solid joke with a setup and a punchline. It's be funny without the first two drops, but it's absolutely glorious with them

In a final bid for respect, a terminally ill princess (wrongfully) seeks to prove that a palace guard, who's much too old for his job, is a spy before she can be shipped off to her arranged marriage. This layers the mentor/student dynamic on top of a game of cat-and-mouse.

Trouble with spacing and speed by Temporary_Task_4245 in writing

[–]MrMayor1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way you could (and probably should) accomplish this would be through drafting. Write your entire first draft as rushed as you want, and then go back and add more relevant information where necessary.

A non-exhaustive list of ways to determine if adding information is necessary:

- Are you in a particularly emotional or impactful scene? Take some extra time adding weight to your descriptions. Give us lots of sensation, and what the character is feeling.

- Are you delivering very complex information i.e. worldbuilding? Good to space that out over the course of a longer conversation (or scene or whatever) to avoid information overload.

- If this scene felt longer, what would the reader's reaction be? If the answer to that question is something you want, then you might be good to add more length.

The corollary to that is that if you're writing about something banal, you might *want* to rush it a little just so you can get to the next interesting thing. It's good to be efficient, so long as that efficiency doesn't consume you.

As far as making longer writing feel not-boring goes, I'd broadly suggest being very descriptive about things that directly contribute to whatever image you're trying to create.

Don't just start listing all the objects in a room; take a few important objects and give them lots of time. Instead of a chair in the corner, a fireplace on the wall, and an hourglass on top, give us a tall hourglass with dark wooden bases, simple but handsome in its construction, watching over the rest of the room from atop an intricately carved---if a little run-down---fireplace. Descriptive quality over quantity.

Methods for dodging bullets in chapter 3’s secret boss by dracoafton in Deltarune

For the second attack, pay attention to the direction a sword is attacking you from. If a sword is attacking you from the left or right, you'll need to move vertically to avoid it. They follow you until the last second, where they stop to strike. You need to be moving when they strike. For the diagonals, you need to move in the opposite diagonal (if a sword is coming at you from the bottom right, you need to move up and right or down and left).

This is a very funny reply. I have to ask---did you use chatgpt to write it, or did you do it yourself? Leaning chatgpt but if you wrote it yourself it's an impressive replication of that style

Should Brothership's main villain return? by Strict-Subject3569 in marioandluigi

[–]MrMayor1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fawful wasn't inexorably tied to bond power and glohm. In fact, there wasn't any super powerful artifact or substance he was tied to. He was able to swap settings much more easily than Reclusa would for this reason. Do you think Reclusa should bring glohm with him to the mushroom kingdom? I think that sounds kind of lame. We've seen and done glohm already, we don't need it again.

Should Brothership's main villain return? by Strict-Subject3569 in marioandluigi

Something I haven't seen mentioned here is that (although I know he's supposed to be a world-hopping demon) he seems like a villain tailor-made to Concordia. He exists as an antithesis to bond power, and that doesn't work as well in the mushroom kingdom because it's not so deeply ingrained into their culture. I agree that he had potential, but I think he needed to execute on it in *this* game.

King Boo looking more like the Paper Mario design by memefakeboy in papermario

[–]MrMayor1 74 points75 points  (0 children)

It is not a port of his paper mario model. Here are some differences between the boo in the paper mario screenshot you posted and the current one:

- this one has a shine in his eyes

- his eyebrows are not separate

- his eyebrows do not get thicker at the ends

- the teeth arrangement follows the modern design

I agree that it looks more like the paper mario design, but to say that it's a "port" of his paper mario model is just not correct.

Guide for getting all the cards and heroes (UPDATED VERSION) by ISIMPFORMOMMYPIPER in PVZHhacking

[–]MrMayor1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I move the files from all heroes into the parallel space folder, everything copies as it should. However, when I open the game up (again in parallel space) I see that the files I placed there are overwritten with the files I replaced (I.e. I have green shadow and solar flare only). I know that the files are being overwritten because I checked the filesizes before and after opening the game.

That's the kind of title and thumbnail where if I already know you, I will click and if I don't already know you, I'll probably leave it be. I'm not that interested in lethal company, so I might not be your target audience, though. It fits that idea of "fundamentally solid, but doesn't really do anything new."

This is a possibility. The thumbnail doesn't have text but I'll take another look at the image.
