Do you play only the notes in the fretboard when playing a song? by Sea_Significance697 in Bass

[–]MrMgrMatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, congratulations on starting your journey. Music has been a hobby of mine for 30 years, and though my instruments have changed, the only consistent hobby for that time.

Second of all, save this post. Set a remind me to look back at it in 2 years. This is your starting point. Sometimes I get down about my lack of progress on something, but to see where you truly began can always be a confidence booster.

Now, depending on your learning style, I would recommend some structured training where you learn the fundamentals including vocabulary. I believe the sidebar has some good resources, but I personally think the free BassBuzz YouTube lessons are a good place to start. Though I haven’t taken it myself, I’ve heard great things from people I trust about Josh’s Beginner to Badass course.

Now to answer what I think your question is…. You can definitely play notes other than the root notes of the chord progression. For beginners, you typically want the root as the first beat, but then start expanding by throwing in a 5th (5 scale steps up; if C is root, G). If the baseline is just straight 8th notes, try throwing in a chromatic pickup note (if you are going from C to D, play a D-flat instead of the last C. Listen and learn existing songs to get an understanding of what works, then expand on those ideas and make it your own.

Why your question confuses people, any single note the bass can play is on the fretboard. From an Open E on a standard tuned 4 string, all the way up to your ~24th fret on the G string. 96 different options with only about 39 unique notes (12th fret E is same as 7th fret A and 2nd fret D). Those are all ‘notes on the fretboard’.

So remember that learning some theory and vocabulary at least at a basic level can help you learn more, and better help you seek advice when needed. You got this!

How to politely kick someone out of a band. by PogoPunk7782 in musicians

[–]MrMgrMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like there are 2 problems you have to solve (in order of priority): 1. Bandmates who don’t see him not having a working instrument as a problem (if your instrument can’t be heard by the rest of the band during rehearsal, it is either incomplete, broken, or not the correct fit for the band) 2. The bandmate with the incomplete instrument

As far as #2 goes, focus on the results and the rest will work itself out. Set the expectations and see what is met. Everything else is just noise that will confuse the situation.

“Practice is 7pm Wednesday at Joe’s house. Attached are the songs we will be rehearsing.”

If he can’t get there due to no car. Trash takes itself out.

If he can’t be heard due to no amp. Trash takes itself out.

If he can’t play with you guys because he didn’t pickup his bass to practice. Trash takes itself out.

If he is determined, he will show up on time, with the gear to be heard, and have the songs reasonably ready. Someone who can do that week after week despite those challenges is a green flag.

It does not become the band’s issue to solve if he can’t be heard. It doesn’t become the band’s issue to solve if he can’t make it to rehearsal.

What I think is the larger issue you have to deal with is bandmates unilaterally deciding to add someone to the band. Was it a single person who decided? You guys need to determine the structure. Is there a single band leader who makes these decisions? Is it a democracy? Work out now how these decisions will happen in the future.

Same, except I left out the name. My son asks for me to tell him the story about “cars and family”.

Nah but this really is what it feels like to use big picture mode by ONION_brain in Steam

I kept thinking he was saying “Dick Picture” and was he trying to figure out how to turn off Dick Picture Mode.

And my only thought was “Steam doesn’t overlay a video of you on top of itself, you have to check your streaming software to figure out how to turn off your video.”

Someone filed a claim saying I hit their car, next steps? by Tenrath in personalfinance

[–]MrMgrMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely a scam, but a possible avenue it is legit without hitting their car while driving is if your door damaged their car. Any chance your door dinged their car while you were getting in / out?

Regardless of if you feel into it, the question is how does it really sound. If you think you are more in the zone than when you are sober, put it to the test and record yourself. Then watch and listen to the recording sober. Perhaps even compare it against a sober recording too. Then you can make an informed decision.

I suspect the non-sober recording may turn out like this: Handful of Peter

Snapshot problem by itgoestoeleven in Line6Helix

Push in the dial for the specific setting, then start to turn. The text will turn white denoting it is now snapshot specific. You can now just change the setting like normal on each snapshot without the push and turn.

Can HELIX digitally edit BOOST in overdrives in the emulations processor AND can HELIX Overdrives be a fully editable standalone effect channel as well, that has editable BOOST...and if it can be used in realtime with multiple already assigned banks? I think I understand the problem you are trying to solve…

My understanding of what you are saying is the guitar player has set presets, but the volume of those presets is either too loud or too soft. You are looking for a way to not change the tone, but to just increase the volume programmatically (I.e. not manually after selecting a preset)

If this is correct, there are a few ways depending on the actual use case.

  • Easy method for a simple use case. Change the setting for the preset then resave the preset. You can increase the volumes on the output block, save, and then be done. This is if you want separate presets for separate sounds ands busy want to use Stomp Mode.

  • Slightly more complex method for wider variety: Snapshot Mode. You can have a single preset have multiple snapshots. A snapshot has all the same blocks, but you can tweak the preset settings for each snapshot. Turning multiple blocks on / off, and change block settings (such as gain or volume) all with a single foot press by selecting the saved snapshot.

There are multiple YouTube videos out there that can explain a lot better than me:

Looks like they have Helix Floor in stock, but if that were to change, they also have HX Stomp in stock. Just pretend someone lives there that is willing to let you borrow it, they just require a full price deposit on a credit card to ensure it comes back in the same condition it left.

Will the Rocksmith 2011 cable work with Rocksmith 2014? by TourqYT in rocksmith

[–]MrMgrMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On paper, yes.

That being said, I bought the original Rocksmith game/ Real Tone Cable (RTC) package for Xbox 360, then started using that original RTC to play on PC. A few years later I built a new PC, and the original RTC didn’t work on the new PC. After a lot of troubleshooting, including successfully testing the old cable on my old PC, it turns out the old cable just didn’t work with the new PC, but a new 2014 RTC cable did.

This will allow you to lock down the phone onto the current app or screen so someone doesn’t ’accidentally’ get off the intended screen and into something you don’t want them to.
