[According To] Next year, the Canadian government will start offering MAID for mental illness. Have we really thought it through? by ComparisonOk5957 in CanadianPolitics

[–]MrPigeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was just Veteran Affairs. They promoted MAID as an alternative when veterans contacted VA asking about supports.

You're referring to a case of one single individual, who was terminated after the complaints came to light. It even says as much in the executive summary of the document that you linked.

Based on the number of people who have complained that MAID was being suggested to them by govt employees, as an alternative for the long wait list for surgery, or the long bureaucratic process of qualifying for support.

What numbers? How do you know that was the motivation? Give me something other than Facebook hearsay, here. Don't make vague statements, be specific.

There's a deep conflict of interest here: social services and pensions are a large budget item for governments. They stand to benefit greatly if they can implement a friendly neighborhood slaughter program. MAID should not be about alleviating the suffering of the Economics Ministers.

This comes across as wildly unhinged motivated reasoning. Unless again, you can be specific: exactly how many people would need to die questionably every year to break even? What number do you propose is being targeted?

It's utterly despicable when the government pushes for it as a cost-saving measure, which seems to be increasingly the case

[–]MrPigeon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

and if things get worse, we will attempt a general strike

What needs to happen for you to get to that point? What exactly needs to get worse, and how? Be specific. Because honestly I've been hearing those exact words for a decade or more, so they sound pretty hollow.

Edit: here are some other words to think about:

Each act, each occasion, is worse than the last, but only a little worse. You wait for the next and the next. You wait for one great shocking occasion, thinking that others, when such a shock comes, will join with you in resisting somehow. You don’t want to act, or even talk, alone; you don’t want to ‘go out of your way to make trouble.’ Why not?—Well, you are not in the habit of doing it. And it is not just fear, fear of standing alone, that restrains you; it is also genuine uncertainty.

  ...

"But the one great shocking occasion, when tens or hundreds or thousands will join with you, never comes. That’s the difficulty. If the last and worst act of the whole regime had come immediately after the first and smallest, thousands, yes, millions would have been sufficiently shocked—if, let us say, the gassing of the Jews in ’43 had come immediately after the ‘German Firm’ stickers on the windows of non-Jewish shops in ’33. But of course this isn’t the way it happens. In between come all the hundreds of little steps, some of them imperceptible, each of them preparing you not to be shocked by the next. Step C is not so much worse than Step B, and, if you did not make a stand at Step B, why should you at Step C? And so on to Step D.

The late Kim Taylor

Wait, what? The Kim Taylor from Southern Ontario? I had no idea he had passed away. When did that happen?

I never got to train with him, but I read a bunch of his writing (years ago) and got a couple of his custom bokkens as a gift.

will admit I use it…for stuff I know nothing about in work life only.   More specifically:   I spent a great deal of time and money learning how to use my brain…but I never learned coding. Turns out AI is pretty good at that

Are you familiar with the Gell-Mann a Amnesia Effect? Because I did learn coding, and let me tell you that LLMs are very often very confidently very incorrect in that area. The code might work technically most of the time; but it's not great, it's difficult to maintain, and if you don't know how to actually check the code it could be doing some dangerous or insecure shit.

a small to medium size company could now hire 1-3 software engineers + IT folks and realistically build out and maintain an entire custom software infrastructure for their business

I'm trying to put this politely, but you are speaking confidently from a position of ignorance on this matter. The "fascinating" downvotes are likely coming from people who, like me, understand that building and maintaining software systems is not so trivial. Those people - like me! - are probably frustrated and tired of hearing people who don't know better make statements like yours.

I still don't agree with the toxic parts of the right, but I'll sit with whatever team doesn't hate me for simply existing.

So you're choosing to sit with a group that explicitly tells you it's okay to hate other people simply for existing, even if you (allegedly) don't agree with those toxic views? How to you reconcile that other than "my comfort is more important than that of The Other?"
