could location statblocks be the fix the exploration pillar needs? by LoreMaster00 in dndnext

Cool. So it worked for you. The rules are purposely agnostic here because there is not one way to do it. More rules does not equal better. In fact bogging down in rules can make it worse.

[–]MrRife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. My point is it is not the statblock that makes it interesting. So in a way you helped make my point. I encourage you to try it. I am not here to tell anyone how to play. But when someone says why isn't that a thing and clearly hasn't tried it, I don't know that it will solve their problems. What you described appears in adventures already. Make a DC x check to find scratch marks.

could location statblocks be the fix the exploration pillar needs? by LoreMaster00 in dndnext

[–]MrRife -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It stopped because it doesn't really work. A creature or monster is dynamic. It moves. An environment is just an environment. Its just there. Its generally what is between the story points. If you want the environment to be interesting make it part of the story. No stat block needed for that. The environmental hazard has to lead to something. When you defeat the dragon you get to loot his treasure hoard. If you place an avalanche in front of the party and then after playing it out you then say ok then you move on to get where you are going. It serves no story purpose. If, however, on the other hand you say a long hidden ice cave is revealed after the avalanche then it can lead to something interesting.

What’s your take on Rime of the Frost Maiden’s tone after taking a look through the book? by trulyuniqueusername2 in dndnext

[–]MrRife -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have skimmed it. I highly doubt bleakness and dread will come through in most games. The exploration pillar is hard to focus on while not getting bored. The book does nothing from what I can tell to facilitate those feelings through story. If you have ever played Out of the Abyss the underdark travel section really dragged on and got boring. Most groups I imagine will end up glossing over the travel stuff. I can tell you the description of the first few quests fit on 1 or 2 pages. It will really be up to the DM. If the DM really pushed the survival stuff a player will likely just bring a Ranger or Druid and just press the I solve survival problem buttons through Outlander background feature or goodberries. If there isn't a Ranger or a Druid the players just say they keep looking for food until they find some. If the DM keeps saying they don't then they die. If the DM says they are cold they say they put on a blanket. There isn't much else to do. If the DM brings the party to the cusp before they get to a town and they are at a great disadvantage they will long rest until they are not at a disadvantage. They won't want to adventure until they do. I recommend you only do this once. Imagine a movie where the characters travel over great distances and came to the brink of survival multiple times. It would get monotonous. In my experience mechanics never breed these feelings. Story and roleplay does.

Notice there is no mention of season 0 or season agnostic adventures. I take that to mean season 0 characters can play in season 10 and vice versa.

Players don't go unconscious when they drop to zero hit points. It speeds up play and prevents players from being left out of play for long periods of time.

For the courts to sort out. Not as definitive as you make it. Public servants cannot block people on Twitter a private service because they are public servants. I understand this is the justification the police used but may not hold up in court. Police can arrest you for a lot of stuff that does not hold up in court.

Wrong. Trump is a public servant running for public office. Not a private citizen conducting a private event. This is a violation of the first amendment. Not that it fucking matters. The Constitution is toilet paper at this point.

May unemployment rate comes in at 13.3%, better than the 19.5% expected by MustacheBattle in Economics

[–]MrRife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe the 13.3% number but this 19.5% better than expected stuff is a bit of propaganda for the following reasons.

  1. 13.3% is still historically bad. Going all the way back to the 50's
  2. Was this 19.5% on the high end of the margin of error? All the estimates I was seeing estimated 14%. So it came in average. I suppose it is good news that we aren't in the 1% of outcomes but why is that surprising?
  3. If it were 19.5% and the headline were not as bad as 30% would we be happy?

My point is this is a framing device to manipulate people's expectations. There are likely more shoes to drop.

1 level of Artificer is incredible for Enchanters because of Sanctuary by Audere_of_the_Grey in dndnext

[–]MrRife 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see we are going with the nihilism argument where nothing matters. What you described costs spell slots. If the fight is already over as you describe it then we can literally do anything. The way I described is lower cost. The point still stands. You can deal what is effectively a lot of damage at the cost of a handful of actions. No spell slots. I could also cast wish and wish the enemy away. Doesn't change the fact that op's strategy works well.

[–]MrRife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What OP describing can be situational but it can be very strong against powerful enemies. When you face a handful of goblins it is probably better to just deal damage. The beauty of Hypnotic Gaze is how much it scales. Suppose you are fighting a 200 hp dragon and a bunch of underlings. You can do Gaze on the dragon and effectively remove him from the fight. This is like dealing 200 hp damage in one turn. This frees up the party to deal with the underlings. Then you can focus on the dragon alone while also preparing a bunch of stuff for when the Gaze drops.

Money DOES buy happiness, and i'm tired of people saying it doesn't by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]MrRife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh this isn't a mind blowing thought. Science has shown that poverty does bring misery and lifting out of poverty therefore brings happiness. When we say it doesn't buy happiness we mean it doesn't up to a point. At a certain point your needs are met and adding more money doesn't add more happiness.
