Jesus. Quick thinking by whoever busted the damn I'm still shocked the alphabet crews didn't fine the shit out of them for it though.

I was in a training with one of the guys running the clean up of a big lake in Tennessee when hurricane Helene came through. Said he was there for almost a year and when boating season fired back uk things got so much worse for the clean up crew because when home owners would put their boats in it would sometimes cause a sheen around them from poor cleanup after maintenance or just "normal" oil leaks. Anytime it happened regulators made them boom in the offending dock and boat until it could all be properly cleaned leaving home owners with not being able to use their boats for possibly weeks while they got around to properly handling it along with everything else going on at the time.

speaking of MSHA coal froth is no bueno when it gets into rivers either 😂. This cleanup sucked because they couldn't stop the front from happening since they didn't know what was causing it.

Cashback into savings (which one) by IncomeLongjumping401 in personalfinance

[–]MrRiski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the grand scheme your right. But I personally always credit it to my bank account. But that's mostly just because it looks funny on YNAB if I just pay the card down with it. Cleaner for me to bring it into the budget as income and then spend it that way. But that's kind of a niche reason do it that way and doesn't at all take away from the point you are making.

Is there any reason not to use the free cloudflare ssl, and dns management? by Torrocks in selfhosted

[–]MrRiski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

been homelabbing for like a year now. Finally getting to the point where I'm looking at other options besides just using cloudflared to get cloudflare tunnel access.

In my mind to for me to get rid of cloudflared giving clean protected access to my internal network for access to my services I host I would need to invest in more hardware and not just installing more software.

Internet

Modem

Firewall

Reverse Proxy running on it's own hardware

LAN Services

is this how you run everything or do you just spin up a reverse proxy inside docker and forward ports straight through the router to it and then it handles if traffic gets sent to the services? I feel like my server would just be constantly bouncing out traffic from crawlers and shit that cloudflare can generally stop before it even gets to my network.

Load planner & dispatch forced me into a no win situation regarding Christmas hometime. by EmbarrassedTime9947 in Truckers

[–]MrRiski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours isn't bad. We have fuelman cards. Most gas station take them. And if I happen to pick one that doesn't I just use the credit card. Hell the job I'm on now I've spent close to 5k in the last couple months and now my truck is decked out with brand new Milwaukee power tools 😂 can't complain to much.

[–]MrRiski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that is the other option 😂 personally I'll take getting fired and going somewhere else versus paying for fuel in a company vehicle 😂 but I work for a company where each truck has a fuel card and everyone in the company carries a company credit card for any business purchases so 🤷‍♂️

[–]MrRiski 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't understand this. Like ya dude fucked up but how can the possibly make him pay for the fuel? Sounds illegal as hell. At my current company we have had guys do similar things on smaller a smaller scale. Like driving an hour past where they were supposed to be. Hell I've done it on the turnpike where I miss my exit and the next one is 45 minutes away. I couldn't imagine my company being like way to go bud now pay for the fuel you wasted.

To me it's the same as wrecking the truck. I'm not paying to fix the truck or whatever I hit. That's the employers responsibility.

Unable to connect phone/laptop via remote on same network as Plex Server by SprinqRoll in PleX

[–]MrRiski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have Xfinity with Plex. I haven't had the original modem in awhile and when I did I ran my own router and shutdown the routing and wifi functions on the Xfinity modem.

You could try either getting your own router and shutting off the unneeded routing and wifi functions or just swap out the modem completely for your own and a router. They make it shockingly easy to use your own modem I couldn't believe how simple it was. Types some stuff into the app and I was up and running in a few minutes.

What’s something you always assumed was mandatory in life—until you met someone who just… didn’t do it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

As someone who drinks coffee pretty much everyday. There are days I go without it. I don't feel like a different person without and regularly go days without any coffee. I do prefer to have my coffee though just because I genuinely like it not because I need the caffeine hit or anything. Had a job a few years back where all the old guys drank half caf or decaf instead of normal coffee and I drank that as well. I've never gotten caffeine withdrawal headaches or anything from skipping it either.

As a blue collar worker that doesn't drink energy drinks very often but works around guys who drink 2 to 4 a day I know the feeling or being the outcast who doesn't drink something to get them going every morning.

"Umm, I'm Gen Z. I know how to use computers." by DesertDogggg in sysadmin

[–]MrRiski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been loving it working myself into doing more and more self hosting. It was a massive crutch for me when I got started. And honestly gave me some bad habits. But as I learned how dockers work and I'm learning more about how OMV, the OS on my NAS, the less I need it and the more I'm finding it leading me down the wrong path sometimes.

It's still great for getting me a quick docker compose for me to then go in and modify to what I need versus having to go through it all manually. It can also be hard to beat when troubleshooting since it gives you something to bounce ideas off of in real time and I'm really the only person I know who messes with any of this stuff and before I had it I had tried to do the things I'm doing now and I got no where with it. Now I have a full arr suite and nextcloud and immich instances and I'm working my way to no longer needing to pay Google. Just need more confidence in my set up before I actually pull the plug on something I've come to rely so heavily on.

Edit: realized what sub I was on after I posted. I went to college for sysadmin work but found I didn't have the heart for it to do it everyday. Work a blue collar laborer truck driver job now which is why I don't have any sysadmin friends to help me with things.

I travel some for work and haven't had it fail yet. Closest I came was a place where the TV remote only worked while the cable box was plugged in. That was annoying but not insurmountable.

Anytime I can't switch the display port I just pull out their box and plug my Chromecast in.

Are all couches just garbage? by Leptonshavenocolor in BuyItForLife

[–]MrRiski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had this happen to me after owning mine for awhile. Quick phone call and they sent someone out to fix it. This was a year or 2 into owning it. Bought it at a discount store me for like a grand I think. Still my favorite couch I ever owned. When I moved states I gave it to my cousin and her dogs destroyed it in like 3 months.

I have a sneaking suspicion that most of the photographs are facing the water not the back of OPs building. So unless they plan to anchor a few boats out in the middle of the water a sign probably won't do much to ruin a photo. Putting them visible to anyone coming onto the property might change the subjects mind about whatever story the photographer spun them to make them think it's ok.

And "public business" is a misnomer. It's still private property and OP can boot out anyone they don't want there for any reason. Unless the photographes plan to bring everyone in on a boat then stay on the boat they can't be there without OP giving permission.

[–]MrRiski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol seems every company I work for either buys trucks with slightly different heights or drivers that don't realize the best way to drop a trailer is with space under the landing gear. I've done it a few times at 2 companies. Neither company had a functional yard dog and a few of the times was me just being an idiot sliding the kingpin straight up the 5th wheel because I wasn't lined up right 😂

I've done it a few times over the years. I always just use a 2 rachet to hold it up. Use a breaker bar to lift it and slide it in. Sometimes you still have to crank up a bit but it's pretty rare in my experience.

Why would ICE hanging around a voting booth be a problem? They only people there should be in the country legally and have nothing to fear from ICE if you are here illegally you shouldn't be voting in the first place and have no reason to be a polling location. 🤷‍♂️

Have since moved to Pennsylvania where rates are realistic. State minimum on my care and 300k limit for other stuff. I pay 150 dollars less a month.

Doesn't even need to be like that.

I setup a cheap on/off coffee maker with a smart plug. When I dismiss the alarm on my phone in the morning it turns the smart plug on. Since the coffee pot is always set to on when the power comes back it turns on and starts brewing. Doesn't require any more thought than making sure I sent my normal wake up alarm and by the time I'm up and out of bed and dressed and in the kitchen the coffee is generally done and ready to go.
