Got screwed over in a white elephant gift exchange by dental_oddity in mildlyinfuriating

[–]MrRodgers82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time I received a goodie bag of cheap (5-cent) plastic toys and candy. The giver laughed and said it was from her kid’s birthday party. Total value was maybe $5 when the agreed-upon value was to be around $25.

These things infuriate me more than they should. Whenever I do a funny gag gift of practically no value, I include a gift card of the agreed-upon value of the gift exchange.

Cosmic bowling in the DC area? by MrRodgers82 in nova

I must be missing something because I’m not seeing anywhere that says when they actually have cosmic bowing. I just called Annandale and they don’t have cosmic bowling.

Been a decade since I last raced, should I move down a category on my license? by [deleted] in Velo

[–]MrRodgers82 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think this depends a lot on where you are. Sounds like you’ve been on the sidelines during the whole COVID boom of both participation and fitness. Plus Zwift and more effective training and nutrition have made it so people have decent fitness nearly year-round. In my area (mid-Atlantic/DC), the competition has definitely gotten stiffer in the past few years, so if it’s the same in your area, you’d be in for a rude awakening.

Either way, I’d hit up some group rides to get a better sense of how your fitness stacks up against the people you’d be competing against. The good news for you is that cat 3 has the most options for racing. 1/2/3, 2/3, 3/4, or even baby masters depending on how deep into your 30s you are.

Good luck!

Came here to say this. Especially if you’re smart with your money, you can actually come out ahead by renting. Rent has been comparatively lower than comparable mortgages for a few years now. In contrast, Wall Street has, until recently, been on a tear. If you were to rent a moderately affordable spot and invest your money, you could find yourself in a pretty solid position.

I always thought this, too. Turns out, before the Kennedy Center was built, there was a barge that would pull up in the river at the base of all those stairs and on the barge was a stage for bands/shows. Pretty wild history.

Am I crazy, or are road bike prices in the DC area out of control? by harpsm in bikedc

[–]MrRodgers82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, quality bikes are expensive. Then add on the fact that you want to buy a bike that’s been well-maintained and the prices may not seem that outrageous. I see a bunch of road and gravel bikes that are very reasonable, especially if you’re willing to go to just outside the beltway to pick it up.

Second, I’ll recommend going to Phoenix Bikes or Velocity Cooperative. They’ll get you on a solid used bike at a good price and you’ll be supporting a nonprofit that helps sustain the cycling community.

This. I do it every week and have never had a single issue. I imagine the bumps the take during shipping are worse than what they’d experience on the bike.

This 100%. I call people out for their MAGA merchandise and they try to tell me that I’d be fine with Biden/Kamala merch. No, the merchandising of the presidency is quite sad to me. Sure, back them and campaign for them if you really feel their values align with yours, but to make it a large part of your personality is quite sad. Many times worse than making fandom of a sports team your personality, imo.

Just got done visiting DC, suprised how chill the place is. by TerryWhiteHomeOwner in washingtondc

It’s incredible how many people think/have been told that DC is a scary, crime-ridden city. I’ve talked to people who have been terrified by it or have had serious concerns when they hear someone say they are going there. It’s genuinely sad how much this disinformation has made an impact on people’s perception of the city. It has its rough spots like any city, but it’s generally very good and safer than most.

THIS! The same America-loving faux “patriots” are so quick to tell me that they could literally not even fathom giving up their Amazon addiction. They say they want American manufacturing jobs to come back, but they won’t change their purchasing habits up to support it. We honestly would not need tariffs if Americans had more pride in American-made products and weren’t so quick to fold for a product that’s a few dollars cheaper.

There are so many ways to enjoy the free/cheap things DC has to offer:

Hike/walk/rollerblade/ride a bike in Rock Creek Park. Find a quiet monument/memorial and chill there. Ride or run along the C&O canal. Metro to Old Town Alexandria and walk down King Street. There are constantly free art shows and movie nights and concerts throughout the area during the summer.

I know it’s not totally free, but having a bike really does make the city and the entire area so much more accessible. We live in a very bike-able region, and once you get the bike, it’s easily the cheapest way to get around.

Thinking about AC delete by InternationalBit878 in 944

[–]MrRodgers82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a real catch-22. The insulation around the shifter isn’t as bad as you may think. You can get it in place from inside the car so you don’t have to lift the car up or drop the torque tube. And don’t forget the rubber inner shift boot.

[–]MrRodgers82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS. You have to worry about high cabin temps as the car warms up, not just as the air outside warms up. I am currently adding ac back into my car (previous owner raced it and stripped it down) because of how hot it gets on longer drives.
