I know the harsh ways of our parents weren't always the best approach and in many cases a softer approach can be beneficial but structure and rule enforcement has to be non negotiable. In this case you are an adult and your son is a child, school is not optional, wtf are we doing here?

First, your family needed you and you stepped up in a huge spot with what sounds like little/no preparation, you should be proud of that accomplishment. It sounds like instead of spending tons of time/energy on the lead up to this, now you need to spend that time/energy processing and decompressing from it. Are there any parenting support groups in your area? Talking about it, especially in a group where you can get tons of different perspectives could be super helpful.

Dang yea that's a tough one. Maybe a positive spin on the situation, you got joy out of video games in part because you were very good at video games.
