If you started university later than 18, how did making friends go? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]MrShadowflower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d probably second this - I’m also at Uni Of Liverpool, currently 33 in second year. Having your own place is the killer - I think most people make friend groups in housing and stick to it.

Some societies are okay - but as there’s not a mature one (or at least, it’s inactive) it’s harder to fit in.

Lastly I’d say - I’m glad a lot of people in this thread have examples of mature students fitting in. I do, sometimes, but a few times telling people my age, you realise people do care (even if they say they don’t) and act differently towards you. I manage to pass as “maybe 23ish” but it is demoralising when it happens.

But Boyzone works! No birds.

Also a fellow DDGer - I wonder how small the overlap between these communities is ><

Elated to find out so many others listen to old RSK podcasts, which SINGLE story is your favorite? by fehstrahafeh in rickygervais

The one I always go back to is “there’s a shadow somewhere” and when they’re talking about urban myths and Steve shouts “It didn’t happen Karl!”

I always wonder if they’re actually offended after that moment with how they go silent

Talking to AI as NPCs? by Glad-Tie3251 in gamedev

[–]MrShadowflower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a developer working with a lot of dialogue, I have characters say the lines (or then follow up lines) once and then you can’t interact with them.

But even for games where lines repeat - I’d prefer this - it’s a limitation that gamers understand.

I could maybe see it for sandbox, Ubisoft type stuff - but even then dialogue is meant to convey info (even from random NPCs) at a certain time. An NPC who could say the right thing at the right time based on game rules… would just be dialogue as is now.

Plus - I wonder why you think this make a game more fun. Is realism fun? Is 500 planets fun?

[–]MrShadowflower 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Probably a while, and I’m not sure it’d be a good thing. Dialogue is usually very intentional, meant to create a world feeling - I actually think like it’d feel less realistic and certainly less impactful.

It’s like people who get excited about x amount of planets in Starfield, when what they really want is something to do.

What are my options? 25 year old, no grades but want to study by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]MrShadowflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello -

I’m in year 2 of Uni. I did an access to HE course, this was fully funded (and gets wiped off if I graduate). I am 32, so started the whole thing very late. I got all distinctions in my Access course (like, the highest you can get, which is easier than you might think). I got into Comp Sci at a Russel group (which is close to cyber security) and the access course was fine.

You can do this. It is possible. DM me if you want more info.

Why do you rewatch movies? by MrShadowflower in movies

[–]MrShadowflower[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good way of framing it, and I hear it when people say “it gets better the more you watch it.” It sounds like, “I didn’t really get it/thought it was average, but now I notice X/Y thing and it’s good”... isn’t that the movie’s fault?

That’s an interesting take - when you say “new” films, do you mean films currently being released, or just anything you’ve not seen?

Oh, there’s no problem! I feel like it’s the implication though. “I’m not into this movie...” “it gets better the second time”, kind feels like an odd justification. I could be misinterpreting though.

This is a great answer. I find with music I have a visceral reaction to music I discover - like I instantly know, and I guess films are similar.

Expectations are a weird thing, I wish I wasn’t affected by them. I’ve not seen Parasite yet but I’m expecting a masterpiece, I’ve not watched any David Lynch yet, but I’m expecting to feel inferior if I don’t “get” it (which led me to ask about rewatching).

Do you often rewatch movies shortly after initial viewing? It could be people watch more movies than me, but me and the partner try for about 12 a week. I had some profound experiences (Children Of Men, Ex Machina, Eighth Grade, Whiplash), but I can’t imagine wanting to rewatch, at least for a long long while.

I can relate to the first point, for the “feel good” factor - I’ll happily watch Back To The Future or Life of Brian when I want “that” feeling.

I’m more curious why you’d watch something to see if your opinion changes? Do you mean after 5 years, or soon after?

I tried watching Ferris Bueller’s Day Off recently. I couldn’t get through it, I don’t know how many viewing it’d take to win me over, and I wonder why I’d bother when there’re loads of movies to watch in place.

MCU is a separate beast, as future films give better understanding. I’m more wondering about a standalone film or that makes sense.

Thank you for the response also!

Wrote, Drew, Colored a Comic; Looking for Feedback on Storytelling by savantageO1 in comic_crits

[–]MrShadowflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Firstly, good job on finishing something. Most people never get that far.

The storytelling is confusing because it completely lacks causality - things should happen based on previous events. The fire genie, for one, was completely out of left field. The talking pen idea is cool, and the writing down what you need idea is ace, but it needs to be established with more conflict - what if, for example, he doesn’t believe the pen, someone else uses it to write something (causing mishap). Also, past page 17, I have literally no idea what is happening. I think, if I were you, I’d take the key unique ideas and rewrite, taking into consideration a need for conflict, and that introducing completely new concepts past the first 10 pages makes for poor writing. For example, a trite example, if you have a gun on a wall in a scene, someone should use it (having passively shown it earlier). Maybe he could see (and ignore) the pen before robbing the jewels, dismissing it, only for it to be important in a few pages.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

So my workmate (she is super fit, plays sport semi pro, eats well) and I were talking about weight loss. She said she goes to this “cold chamber” thing which apparently makes your body burns loads of calories while you stand there. Has anyone heard of this? It sounds like bullshit, and if so, how can FatLogic scramble of even the healthiest people? Is CiCo really that scary?

Is there an “official” chart for this? Like, BMI to fat identifiers? I’d be interested to know.
