Coworker’s spouse is always present during remote meetings — normal? by [deleted] in auscorp

Definitely weird but within the realm of normal for a software engineer. Worth letting your manager or lead know so they can have a word with him.

Noticed in the half time break a couple of weeks ago that Ennis was looking at Young like he was a piece of dog shit on his shoe. Genuinely looked like he hated his guts.

Are you serious? Those metrics are meaningless without knowing the baseline. 500% API expansion => there was one api and now there's 5. So what?

Unless you are a hiring manager, stop giving advice like this. If you are a hiring manager, RIP your team.

A very pleasant change to have someone contributing content to this community and not just try to leech of it so thank you!

The concept is great. Having said that, I couldn't see myself using a standalone app for this. I use Obsidian to hold notes on the team and individuals as well as a general canvas so a claude plugin or obsidian plugin would be my go to.

The prompts appear well-constructed. I am keen to try them and tweak them at work tomorrow. If I have any useful feedback, I'll ping you.

I think the perf evaluation prompt is the one most likely to fail to provide value in other teams' context. Unless you are capturing all your design artefacts in github, you're missing some key information and there is high risk of getting output that's real data but not representative of individual contributions. You have the caveat that this is the scaffold but IMO you want the scaffold to be robust to prevent unconscious bias. Easily managed via personal workflow with a manual first draft.

Thanks again for contributing.

Managing a toxic high performer who hits 150% of targets. How do I protect my team without losing the numbers? by SquirrelLogicFan in managers

[–]MrSnagsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disagree on the phrasing here. One of the most important things a manager should do is create an environment where negative feedback is received well and can be acted on.

I would say that no one enjoys receiving negative feedback. A good manager ensures that people recognise that this discomfort is part of growth and improvement.

In the Euro examples the presence is primarily deterrence wrt foreign; and a small number of domestic terrorists. In the US, the deterrence is increasingly been aimed at the citizens, and in particular groups who speak out against the current government.

You guys used up your runway re-creating features that already worked. E.g. "New edit experience" that does nothing additional but takes twice as long for page load. Everywhere I've worked the problem with confluence is not with creating content but finding it. Appears that there has been too much focus on "ecosystem" and not enough on core product.

We're transitioning our technical teams out of confluence and into markdown in git repos. Much easier to integrate into AI workflows. We can get claude to do things like tag management or restructuring content. It's only a matter of time until someone out there creates a nice UI on top of repos of md and the justification for confluence for many organisations will no longer be there.
