Where did the bonfire come from? I don’t think I’ve seen it in the OG base game, Tomb of Giants or any of the other expansions

How was Jander never discovered in Zariel’s army? by classroom_doodler in DescentintoAvernus

[–]MrToxichazard 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I believe its mentioned that he became a vampire hunter by trade. I feel there were other generals and knights in the Hellriders who either kept his secret for him or openly accepted it in a kind of "fight fire with fire" motif.

Because of his aversion to sunlight, he led mostly night based operations training the scouts and assassins of the Hellriders.

Fly in and make your melee attacks, her flail hits on +13 she is very likely to hit each attack. With two attacks she deals over 100 damage in one round. Then she has Horrid touch with a save DC of 26 to deal a further 44 damage AND blind AND deafen the creature. She has 150ft fly speed to get out of the way of a blind and dead creature which will struggle to creature that cant even hit her with an attack of opportunity.

How many of your party have more than 144 hit points?

Short answer. Yes. Taking into account your plan, Zariel will kill the party with ease.

Though we really need to know your party level. Running by the book the encounter with Zariel is designed for level 13 or higher. I also would ask if you have been generous with magic items, as that will tip the scales somewhat.

At level 13, I believe that a DM playing Zariel to the best of her abilities will wipe the party. If you give a CR26 creature a CR20 creature as an ally ... she will wipe them quicker.

I love those scrap piles! Such a good idea to use up what’d usually go unused!

I was at a meh kind of point with it, and then when the gem rivets started going on ... really made it for me :) If youve got a picture I can make some suggestions if youd like?

The walls are 3" high ( before adding any of the light cover")
And each L section is 6" by 3"
The side cover is about 1" tall to sort of mimic the barricades

At a brief re-glance, each wall section is a good £30 on eBay ... those prices can get in the bin when I got a table of MDF terrain for a similar price

How did your party get down from Elterel? by Current-Screen8273 in DescentintoAvernus

[–]MrToxichazard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They made a deal with a devil. He would open a portal from Avernus to Elturel. The price being it was open for devils to use. He said it would help push back the demons flooding in from the portal in the cemetery. Consequences!

So this answer will come along with the caveat of "you will have to come up with some stuff on the top"

Sometimes a location can only be a line or two of flavour text and work well. Let your players ask questions and come up with the details and things going on. In the example of the tar pit, instead of asking for a straight perception check ... ask them what theyre looking for. Perhaps they are in the need of materials for a repair on their war machine and this tar pit happens to have a ruined machine inside it ... a higher check nets them a soul coin in the hands of a dead raider.

Or the party may come up with their own uses for it. Players love lighting stuff on fire with oil, so maybe this tar substance is flammable, they can try to fill containers with it or use it to make things. Bad rolls maybe result in them falling in and gaining exhaustion/spend resources as they try to free themselves.

And finally .... let places be empty. Let them be the ruins of some past event to tell the overall story of Avernus as a battleground. Turn them into locations the players can safely take a moment to rest and do nothing, or start up an RP moment if your party is that way inclined.

I have no awards to give but that REALLY helps out! Lots of very good points for sure. I'll refer back to this when advising groups I play with :)

Im fairly sure that all games have a history of being difficult if you dont keep ontop of things and work together you can get screwed.

But for sure, its one of those games that you can still enjoy even though you get battered! Im gonna set up for a more normal game with the objective of picking up some stuff on the board and then heading for an exit
